Green Lantern Artist Ethan Van Sciver Reviews Lanterns: "You Failed... All Of You Should Be Ashamed"

Veteran Green Lantern artist Ethan Van Sciver has shared his review of DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns, and it turns out the artist despised the series that he describes as a "profound failure."

Comic book artist Ethan Van Sciver has become a divisive figure in recent years, largely due to his outspoken commentary on social and political themes in media. However, his work on Green Lantern alongside Geoff Johns remains hugely significant, especially as they worked together to bring Hal Jordan back to the DC Universe in the mid 2000s.

While Grant Morrison was initially hugely critical of Lanterns, later episodes won him over (we've yet to hear what the acclaimed writer thought about the finale).

After remaining fairly silent on the series over the past couple of months, Van Sciver has now decided to share his review of the DC Studios/HBO series. He was not a fan, but admits that, initially, he "loved" watching the show.

Acknowledging the "budgetary constraints and limits," the artist says he continued watching Lanterns weekly but wanted to wait until he'd seen the whole thing before finally sharing his opinion. Now, that boils down to this: "You failed."

Van Sciver added, "It shouldn’t have been hard to drag these characters through the hell you put them through and have them come out better for it by episode eight, but instead you tarnished and destroyed them. All of them. Even the Manhunters are reduced by this show."

"John is a selfish, villainous asshole. Kerry is a monstrously stupid and cowardly murderer, the Guardians are either weird schemers or absent entirely, Guy is a pussy, and Hal... why did you need to murder him in such a hollow and meaningless, deeply depressing and sick way?"

"There is something deeply wrong with your entire writing room," he continued. "I cannot believe James Gunn of [Guardians of the Galaxy] fame could allow this sick nightmare to coexist with his typically fun superhero films. All of you should be ashamed for this profound failure. "

Van Sciver went on to say that he agrees with fans who believe Lanterns' creative team hate Hal Jordan, and said that their "mental illness" caused them to "destroy the terrific John Stewart, too. In trying to demote Hal, you killed John’s decency, loyalty and his soul."

His final rating? "1/10 stars," the artist declared, "Pure evil, but Kyle Chandler was a revelation. Bless him."

Van Sciver certainly isn't holding back, and while some will be quick to dismiss his opinion given past controversies, he does have a long history with the Green Lantern comic book series. That gives him some authority, and this scathing take echoes what many fans have said.

"Lanterns' leads shine bright," we wrote in our Season 1 review, "but even they can't save this abysmal adaptation of the comics that, embarrassed by the source material it's based on, delivers a woefully bland and uninspired take on Green Lantern that's another miss for the DCU."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

@Beer85 - Based on the clips I've seen and everything I've heard, he nailed it. I don't think a large portion of those who sat through season 1 will return for a second round of torture, but who knows.

I agree. Green Lanterns should be in a space setting and many comic book stories can be used as an inspiration and they decided to do this show and kill Hal Jordan and make John unlikeable.

@Alucard28 - you dont read comics, because green lantern is just as much earth based as it is in space. READ A COMIC

Truebeliever333 - 10/8/2026, 10:03 AM
@supermanrex - Earth based GL stories are common. No denying that.

That wasn’t Hal Jordan or John Stewart.

@supermanrex - sorry kid but I read comics. Yes, there's Earth setting in some Green Lantern's comic but the series was a lame introduction IMO. Sorry if my own opinion doesn't match yours.

The performances were great. The story felt like there were many logical leaps.

The talent is there in the cast, they just need a story that can really show it off. And more constructs are needed

@Wahhvacado - Good cast. Limited budget. Not a great show and Ethan’s criticisms are spot on.

Making JS the main DCU GL makes sense. How they did so was not good for John or Hal or the DCU.

Is Matt McGloin of CosmicBookNews running this site now? I know Josh has a hard on hate for this series but I KNOW there were positive reviews out there for this show you can post. The show is doing hella good in ratings! Somebody likes it!

@Truebeliever333 - Wow...I didn't know Euphoria and The Pitt are sci-fi shows that compare to it...........

Also...didn't The Penguin piggy back off of The Batman? Explains the uptick in viewership don't ya think?
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/8/2026, 10:08 AM
@Irregular - the Penguin was released way after the movie. This show received as much or more help from the main DCU. And it wasn’t a sci-fi show, not much of one anyway.

@Truebeliever333 - "And it wasn’t a sci-fi show, not much of one anyway.

Oh...so you have a ring that can create holograms with consciousness and memory like the Holodeck in Star Trek? Must've been the moment you saw that guy fly across NYC to Gotham City because you think that all happens in real life.

the Penguin was released way after the movie.

You mean two years? You act as if The Penguin just came out earlier this year lol. And also there is nothing in the DCU in the show so I don't know how it received more help from the DCU other than honoring a contract and a production that was in play before the merged Warner Discovery deal...
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/8/2026, 10:20 AM
@Irregular - Not much of one. Yup. It wasn’t.

Two years is longer than the previous DCU releases.

If you want to claim it is doing great then fine. I’m saying it is doing ok based on the comps.

@Truebeliever333 - Not much of one. Yup. It wasn’t.

So you do have a ring with holograms equipped with consciousness? You see how you're not making any sense?

"Two years is longer than the previous DCU releases."

You're not even making sense and losing any sense of this argument I see. Hence why you're just like "If you wanna claim it's great then fine" type of attitude lol.

@krayzeman - There's not much story in "Lanterns gets positive reviews from critics." A review, good, bad, or indifferent Someone who's worked on the book and was a participant in what is considered the definitive run on the character has a lot more of a story and article to it.
krayzeman
krayzeman - 10/8/2026, 12:23 PM
@Truebeliever333 - This show didnt get any help from the main DCU. In the beginning besides us hardcore fans casual viewrs didnt even know this connected to the wider DCU until Guy Gardner showed up. And thats only if they seen Superman.

@krayzeman - It's nowhere near getting hella good ratings - they spin that shit to the tits.

Game of Thrones shows real numbers - this dogshit gets viewers 'over the weekend' or 'the first two episodes' or other obfuscated bullshit.

It sucked and they would rather it die on the vine than to admit the DEI shit was fake all along.

Batmangina
Batmangina - 10/8/2026, 12:31 PM
@krayzeman - Backstory Changes: Online criticism and review-bombing arose after a specific episode—penned by a Black female writer—portrayed the origin story of the character John Stewart with thematic elements addressing racial dynamics, generational conditioning, and how white privilege influenced why John's father and others missed out on receiving a Green Lantern ring over Hal Jordan.

@krayzeman - Not sure if viewership is a good test for reception. Seems like non-comic book audiences like it, while comic book fans are mixed to negative. Halo season 1 had pretty good reviews at 70% RT and high viewership too but video game fans hated it. A majority of the audiences for Halo were non video gamers who just enjoyed a Sunday night show, Lanterns isn't as bad as Halo but it seems to be more positive towards people who don't care or know much about the source material.

@krayzeman - I'm no fan of Josh (or Lanterns), but he does write for clicks. That's part of his job. I've seen articles say "Deadpool and Wolverine Star Henry Cavill" it's SEO practices. It's to be expected.

krayzeman
krayzeman - 10/8/2026, 1:18 PM
@mastakilla39 - but a lot of comic book folks like me DID like it! They probably are just not in every comments section commenting about it. Negativity gets more coverage and engagement that positivity(this website) so it makes the perception a bit skewed. You go to another section of the internet and it's probably an entirely different story. At the very least this show DID create constant engagement good or bad over the last 8 weeks like i've never seen. Certainly wasnt expecting that before it aired.

https://deadline.com/2026/10/lanterns-season-1-finale-ratings-hbo-1237150408/

"The company confirmed at the time that it outperformed the premieres of several tentpole series including IT: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin and True Detective: Night Country. Those went on to average 27.1M, 19.8M, and 17.5M global viewers, respectively, which already made a good case for the trajectory of Lanterns."

RE : >>>"Not sure how thats DEI."

Because it's "black character" backstory retelling his experience from a "black person" POV, and framing their perception of the world through the lens of race and racial inequality...and for some people that's enough to make it all rotten and therefore....."DEI" (i.e....."Something I don't like"....aka..."Woke")

It's always shorthand for something else they want to say or call someone/thing, but don't want to openly say it.

It's not rocket science where (that commenter in particular) was coming from when he threw that in there.

Forthas
Forthas - 10/8/2026, 10:43 AM
@Bucky74 - Show me the article from THIS author that focuses on ONE positive review. I'll wait...

NOTE: I write this as a person who desperately wants James Gunn to fail and get the boot. But we have to be intellectually honest, and these petty arguments that the show is "supposed " to be one way or the other are ridiculous, especially in this case, where you cherry-pick a single review that you happen to agree with, then use this platform as a tool for propaganda to push your personal views. You enjoy or don't enjoy the show for what it is, which is fine either way. But it is petty to try to push your point of view hiding behind a negative review.
