Lanterns Showrunner Explains Halogram's "Junior" Scene (And Why It Doesn't Mean What You Think)

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy has explained the final exchange between John Stewart and the Halogram, but is the door firmly closed on Hal Jordan ever making his return to the DCU?

Lanterns ends with Hal Jordan dead at the hands of Sheriff Kerry, with the door firmly closed on any sort of resurrection for the former Green Lantern. He's neither a clone nor an alien in disguise; the Hal dead and buried in Rushville is the real deal.

Many fans would like to see his demise undone, and the series appeared to at least hint at it by having Sinestro claim he could bring Hal back to life by using the Halogram—a 2006 copy of the hero's consciousness—to do so. However, when John Stewart takes Hal's ring and says his new oath, Hal is seemingly wiped from the ring for good.

During John and the Halogram's final scene together, you might have noticed that the Hal stand-in calls his replacement "Junior." That's led to speculation about the 2006 version somehow acquiring his 2016 counterpart's memories so he might live to fight another day. Not so, according to Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy.

"We talked about this thing as a love story between these guys in a certain way, but one of them has to die in order for them to truly come together," he tells The Los Angeles Times. "Even over the course of the Halogram being in the show, he never called John 'Junior' ever. He always called him 'trainee.'"

"Until the last moment when he says ... 'I love you, too, Junior.' There’s something very bittersweet about the fact that the two people we spent all that time with don’t fully have their moment together."

While it's a touching scene, it also doesn't make a ton of sense given that the 2016/2026 Hal called John "Junior" in an insulting manner after meeting the former Marine's father, John Stewart Sr. However, the insinuation seems to be that the less jaded Hal might have used it in an affectionate way, meaning the 2026 Hal at least cared a little for his eventual replacement.

According to writer Tom King, Hal's past with Sinestro "damaged him," meaning "he was unable to see John for what he is and unable to listen to John the way he should. [With the Halogram] John finally encounters a Hal who hasn’t gone through that, and they can have conversations they couldn’t have before. John can start to feel the empathy that Hal denied him, and he can see Hal for who Hal really is."

Death rarely sticks in comics, and future seasons of Lanterns could find a way to bring Hal back from the dead. It doesn't seem overly likely based on comments from the creative team in other interviews, but James Gunn has surely taken note of the unhappiness among DC fans.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

Halogram Hal was awesome. I wish he were around more.

Just introduce the Lazarus Pit before we get to see Batman, no problem. Have Alfred's silhouette dump him in and, bing-bong, Hal's back

Yeah.. honestly I was kind of looking forward to Man of Tomorrow.. not so much after Lanterns. While it was sort of an entertaining story, they [frick]ed up Hal, they [frick]ed up John, and then ran Guy off for seemingly no reason.. and John is my favorite Green Lantern in the comics but.. meh.. not really excited about it after what they do with the show. I'd rather see Guy come back and I hated him in the comics

It just hurts being finally given an awesome Hal Jordan and an incredible actor to portray him, only to have him Gunned down in the first episode, accused of being privileged and not actually worthy, is just "broken not brave", and with John ending any chance of his resurrection when he powered up Hal's ring with a Fear Lantern. WTF man, what did Hal do to deserve this treatment?

@Super12 - It's the same BS from these writers in Hollywood.

Knock down and crap on Luke Skywalker so you can build up Rey.

Knock down and crap on Indiana Jones so you can buildup whatever her name was.

Knock down and crap on Hal Jordan so you can build up John Stewart.

It's lazy.

Hal clearly yearns for John

Shouldnt this series become part of the Jimmy Olsen court show where the Sheriff gets defended for blasting Hal in the face because she has post partem depression?

Superman was okay and did okay at the box office.

Season 2 Peacemaker, Supergirl, and Lanterns turning heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart into miserable pieces of sh!t represent how Gunn will ultimately destroy the DCFU V2.

Hologram Hal was the Jordan we should’ve got. Instead of that disheveled unlikable one, who went to jail for nothing.

Very much enjoyed the show. Hopefully season 2 is as good, or better. Interested to see where they go with Sinestro in season 2. Looking forward to seeing John in Man of Steel.

After finishing this series I stand by a comment I made a few days ago, this shows leads are fantastic and would have done just as well with comic accurate takes on the characters. The show should have just leaned on the buddy cop dynamic and trainer v. trainee but avoid the bitterness and hate and just have a clash of two strong personalities, old and young, etc. Sure it’s been done but it has all been done before. This would have at least enabled a fresh take with these two characters on screen and could have spared us bitter Hal. As an elseworlds story it kept me intrigued but as the formal GL character set up it sucks that Hal is just gone.

This was a great series. I admit I was not thrilled with the finale. While I don't ascribe to the idea that the show "ruined" Hal the way in which he died is not what a superhero deserves. Hopefully they reverse that decision.

Anyway congratulations to the show for making the Green Lantern franchise respectable and redeeming the character as compared to the 2011 film.
