Lanterns Showrunner Reveals Scrapped Plans For John Stewart; Never Wanted An Action-Packed Finale

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy has confirmed that plans for John Stewart to suit up were scrapped relatively early on and admits that there was never a version of the finale that included action.

The Lanterns finale arrived on HBO last night, and it's split opinions. Some fans loved DC Studios' very different take on the Green Lantern Corps, while others felt the DCU has done Hal Jordan and John Stewart a disservice.

There have also been a lot of grumblings about the lack of action in the finale—there isn't a single construct in the episode—and the fact that, after eight episodes, John never suits up.

CBR recently caught up with Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy to discuss "Dirt and Stars," and he confirmed that discussions about giving John his Green Lantern costume were dropped relatively early on.

"In the early days, we did designs on Aaron's suit at the same time that we did designs on Hal's, on Kyle's," he confirmed. "In the end, it was really a story point. If the season would have continued on another day, you probably would have seen it. But emotionally in that moment, once Hal and John have their goodbye scene – the Halogram and John – the season had ended, emotionally."

"I know there's the montage, and I know he flies," Mundy acknowledged. "But to get to a place where he then had the suit would have taken us out of the moment between those guys. Once we knew that was the ending point, then we were like, 'The suit's not going to be in this season.'"

Now, it's down to Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow to make up for that. Intentional or not, Lanterns has given John the "Surf Dracula" treatment, but forgot to let him surf in those closing moments (on the plus side, as Mundy points out, he did take flight).

The expectation had been that Lanterns might deliver an action-packed finale, pitting John and the Halogram against Sinestro and/or the second Manhunter. According to Mundy, there was never any discussion about "a version of the finale that was more action-oriented."

He continued, "This story was about these two guys. We knew that if we landed it emotionally with them, we would have done our job. And obviously, over the course of the season, we knew there were going to be action (moments). But we barely even talked about it because we all just knew this is what we were going for, that that would have been distracting. That would have been 'incident' instead of 'emotion.'"

Lanterns has not been officially renewed for Season 2, and the only DCU TV series currently in active production is The People vs. Gorilla Grodd.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

This was a story about 2 guys. And it's a giant pile of crap. The end.

And I hated that. John was shown to be incredibly gifted at making constructs. It would've made perfect sense for him to materialize his own costume.

@ModHaterSLADE - And he can keep constructs going almost without thinking about them, like his bird.

The show passed for me overall, but they really could have done more with that.

If this was Richard and Sam in a Nova corps show but exactly the same Josh and half the morons on this site would love it. It's basically the DC equivalent of Wonder Man only better.

@Hobmoblin - that’s a valid point. Too many people sucking on that Disney tit. Blindly following like lemmings. I wonder if they get as upset when Disney changes things in their movies and shows. Doubt it to this degree.

@Lisa89 - So, something that doesn't happen is now a spoiler? Is Mark putting "Hal's Killer" in a headline also a spoiler, as it confirms he's been killed? Should headlines just be, "Lanterns [Spoiler] Says [Spoiler] [Spoiler] [Spoiler] In [Spoiler] [Spoiler]"?

Not seeing a suit or getting any action scenes is not the problem with the finale.

Thank god they didn’t have the suit it probably would have been a lower budget effort, better wait for the big reveal in the movie

WB did not want to pay for green lantern movie so no money for action sequences or constructs - you have to compromise and make true detective

I blame gunn too for not pushing for this to be a movie, some characters need a big budget special effects - I would swap supergirl as a TV show and this as a movie both projects would be better

Gunns DC kicked Superman in the nuts & what he did to Hal Jordan/John Stewart....the longer Gunn stays at DC the more he destroys the characters I loved. SMFH

If all DC fans care about is just action sequences and toxic masculinity, then maybe the DCU isn’t what they should be watching. Go watch those dog shit expendables movies instead. They don’t have real plots, no character development, no other characters besides the expendables, we have no idea who the expendables are or even why or what they are fighting for, it’s just a series of stock generic fight sequences with the most stock generic boring one note characters to ever exist acting like a bunch of eighth graders. That’s the perfect franchise for these incels. Oh wait, even then the last film was so bad even they won’t vouch for it, so I guess that goes to show that even they have some form of standards.

Yeah...Never expected anything big honestly. Seems like they already did that bit in episode 5. It wrapped up in the most grounded nonchalant way possible. Kind of hated that there wasn't a bit more...a little Manhunter Vs John would have sufficed for me.

Very much enjoyed the finale. I’m curious if they leave Hal gone, or bring him back doing a take on the Parallax story. Perhaps Sinestro brings him back, as he did say he knew a way. Have Hal not really remember his past life, and then have a redemption arc. I doubt it though. Also, it makes sense to save the big reveal of his suit for Man of Steel. It didn’t bother me he didn’t “suit up”. The show didn’t need that. Curious where they go with him and the unsanctioned lantern. I can only assume Sinestro did something nefarious while making the lantern.

Could/should have been a better ending, but still enjoyed the show over all. Its still the best thing the DCU has put out so far.

his reasoning for not including it is flimsy, in my opinion. i don't see how you go through this whole journey with John l, from boy to man, and not have the catharsis of him assuming his role as GL thematically AND visually.

the truth is, they didn't want to steal thunder from MOT lol

but it is what it is...
