Lanterns Turned John Stewart Into The Ultimate Surf Dracula — But Can Man Of Tomorrow Make It Right?

Lanterns spent nearly eight hours building up to John Stewart becoming a Green Lantern, only to fumble the payoff. Can DC's bizarre storytelling approach be fixed in Man of Tomorrow?

Comedian Topher Florence first put forward the idea of "Surf Dracula" in 2021. Taking to X, he wrote, "Back in the day, if you did a TV show called 'Surf Dracula,' you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures, but in the streaming era the entire first season's gotta be a long-ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 minutes in the finale."

Does that sound familiar? Well, it should, because that's exactly what Lanterns just did with the DCU's newest addition, John Stewart.

It took the DC Studios TV series nearly eight hours to introduce John Stewart as Green Lantern, but without even showing him "surf for five minutes in the finale." Instead, he makes up an oath with no connection to the comics, charges up his ring, and flies off (courtesy of some so-so wire work) without ever suiting up.

Netflix's Daredevil made us wait until the finale's final act to see the Man Without Fear in his red suit—that took thirteen episodes, as a reminder—but Lanterns can't even give fans that much. Next summer's Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, will likely introduce John as a true, albeit unofficial, Green Lantern, but that doesn't help us now, does it? And it certainly doesn't help Lanterns.

We've already waxed lyrical about the lack of constructs in the HBO series. Put it down to a low budget or the creative team feeling that the whole concept is just too lame for a "prestige" drama, but perhaps we shouldn't be shocked that Lanterns dropped the ball on giving John the chance to shine as a superhero in the finale. After all, the series had already devoted a lot of time to establishing how superior in every way to Hal he is.

The problem isn't simply that fans didn't get to see John Stewart in his full Green Lantern costume, or that he didn't spend the finale throwing around elaborate constructs. It's that DC chose to tell a Green Lantern story while seemingly being embarrassed by the very thing that makes these stories distinctive.

There's nothing inherently wrong with taking a slower approach to a superhero's origin. Lanterns could have spent seven episodes establishing John as a person, exploring his relationship with Hal, and grounding the mythology in a murder mystery before delivering the superhero payoff we've been waiting for. Instead, it spent almost eight hours circling the idea of John becoming a Green Lantern.

Man of Tomorrow can make that right next July, though Gunn will need to find room to do so in a movie that's already jam-packed with characters.

To borrow Florence's analogy, Lanterns gave us eight hours of explaining why Surf Dracula might eventually surf, only to hand him the board when there was barely any time left to actually do it. DC didn't need to rush John Stewart into becoming Green Lantern. But after spending an entire season getting there, it absolutely needed to let him be one.

Only Superman is preventing the DCFU V2 leaking lifeboat that Gunn is paddling from sinking.

@DocSpock - true. Gunn’s Superman was good (enough) and people will return for that

@ObserverIO -

The fact that it was just mediocre was very disappointing. All the ridiculous side characters were just too much. Plus, they did perfect casting for Lois Lane and didn't hardly use her at all.

Weak superman was pretty unimpressive.

Seeing as how he's not affiliated with the Corps, what are we supposed to call him? Just John? Sentinel? Tomb Raider?

Lets just be real...we was optimistic about Gunns Superman...it was disappointing. The forced comedy, the weird sexual innuendos, Superman not being the hero in his own film. The bad costumes, the bad script, The Viltramite heritage, the goofy ass Ma & Pa Kent. Do I expect Man Of Tomorrow to be better? Maybe BUT after EVERYTHING I have seen from Gunns DCU I'll Pass!! DC is DOOMED under this leadership.

@ClarkJoeKent - What are you talking about here? His Superman movie was easily the best since the second Donner movie released over 40 years ago.

What MOS did to Lois Lane and the Kents is a far bigger affront to the character of Superman than anything Gunn did.

@Awest66 - lol😂😂😂 Youre funny. Kevin Costner was the best Pa Kent on film...to say that goofy as Pa Kent from Gunns Superman was better.who had 2 lines & lived in a trailer 😂😂😂 Diane Lane also did a stellar job as Ma Kent on film. MOS was an Epic, Cinematic film & I ONLY watched it AFTER I watched Gunns Superman. I was talk shit like you guys. Regurgitating the bull shit I was reading on this site. Then I watched Man Of Steel on HBO after watching Gunns Superman....NO COMPARISON! MOS had a better costumes, cast, script, theme music, cinematographer, CGI....Im sorry cant watch Superman cry & get kicked in the balls & not be the hero in his own film named Superman! At least in MOS he was the HERO & saved EVERYONE & didn't cry & complain. Lois was a reporter in MOS in Gunns Superman Lois beat Lex not Superman 😂😂😂😂

NO IT WASNT! A bad film that doesn't age well. Cant watch it twice. He's a bitch like Supergirl said in the end when she showed up.

@ClarkJoeKent - Kevin Costner was the worst Pa Kent, He literally told Clark that letting a bus full of children die might have been the right call.

Absolutely disagree on everything else too. Superman 25 easily surpasses Man of Steel in literally everything. The costumes are better, the cast is way better, the writing is easily better (Watch MOS again, The dialogue is almost entirely exposition). It's also a much better looking film without that ugly ass blue/gray filter that Snyder uses on every one of his movies. It's music actually sounds like Superman-feeling music instead of MOS"s generic action trailer music.

Superman worked to save everyone in the Gunn movie, even a squirrel. In MOS, Superman literally threw Zod into a populated area.

Lois Lane was absolutely perfect in Gunns Superman, MOS portrayed her as a mousy, soft-spoken redhead.

@Awest66 - The 1st 10 minutes Gunn Superman had got his ass kicked & spitting up blood & screaming from sunlight😂😂Enjoy.
I watched Gunn Superman 1st!!! I was so disappointed that I watched Man Of Steel & its 10 X more CINEMATIC with EPIC SCALE than Gunns Superman. Sorry you cant convince me that it's better cuz it's not. Gunn is even saying his Man Of Tomorrow is more dark & mature🤣🤣I guess he watched it too😂😂😂

@Awest66 -lol😂😂😂😂 you so funny. Gunn Superman bulky costume that not form fitting & constantly creases like hard plastic😂😂with the big red diaper😂& Colar. Where did it come from? Who made it? Whats the symbol on his chest? He was sent to earth to have sex with the population & enslave them😂😂 Soon as you see Henry Cavill hes saving a ship full of men, then flashbacks of him as a teen saving a bus full of kids, he saved the ppl in Kansas, Metropolis & beat Zod & saved the planet. Chris Reeves DEPOWERED the kryptonians & killed them in his fortress. Supergirl killed a defenseless man. Gunns Superman didn't save metropolis, he didn't beat Lex, the weird & wacky Justice Gang 😂did all the work. Al;l Gunns Superman did was whine & cry about being human😂😂😂😂 & screamed at Lex where the dog Lex?😂😂L1,R2,X,X,X those playstation commands beat Gunns Superman. He gets kicked in the nutz & called a bitch by supergirl. ENJOY your slop!😂😂😂😂

ClarkJoeKent - 10/6/2026, 9:25 AM
@Awest66 - The over saturating of blue color in Gunns Superman has his face & hair blue in scenes😂😂😂 The wonky CGI, & weird BIG hands flying. Cant make this shit up, The chatgpt script...what was the point of this film. It wasn't a origin or nothing...what was it😂😂😂😂😂

@ClarkJoeKent - You really dont care about Supermans humanity, do you? Or actually portraying him as a likable, charming character?
Awest66
Awest66 - 10/6/2026, 11:08 AM
@ClarkJoeKent - You know in MOS, The US military are the ones who actually banished Zods men back to the Phantom Zone, Right?

Gunns Superman spent his entire movie saving people without recklessly endangering them like Cavill did.
Awest66
Awest66 - 10/6/2026, 11:11 AM
@ClarkJoeKent - Every scene in MOS is shot through an ugly filter that gives it a really bland bluish, grey look.

The script of MOS is also legit terrible. The dialogue is almost entirely exposition.

ClarkJoeKent - 10/6/2026, 11:45 AM
@Awest66 - lol😂😂Youre ability to shill for Gunn is AMAZING! Man Of Steel was so bad that MILLIONS of ppl (THE FANBASE) forced DC to release the Snyder Cut to JLA that broke the internet when debuted. Gunns Superman sold HALF as many tickets as Man Of Steel...I guess the fanbase dont like Gunns DCU evident by the numbers...also Man Of Steel was Executive Produced by Chris Nolan who's said that his Superman Movie will be a first contact movie. The cinematography is epic! The fight scenes are phenomenonal so much so that Gunn has to steal from this film, the scene of the guy throwing a can at Superman, the fight scene in the stadium...sorry dude you must get a check from Gunn to shill because I've watched that film...its bad. Take out krypto the dog from the film & nobody goes to watch it😂😂😂😂😂COPE-A-MANIA😂😂🤣🤣🧐🧐

ClarkJoeKent - 10/6/2026, 11:50 AM
@Awest66 - It was Superman's plan. He told the General & the scientists to use his ship to create the singularity to open the portal to The Phantom Zone...Also Man Of Steel Henry Cavill isn't Superman yet. Hes only wore the suit for a day😂🤣 While Gunns Superman BEEN Superman for over 3 yrs & still cant fight😂😂😂😂😂 Man Of Steel is the journey of him becoming Superman. I know Gunn fans needs simple A,B,C, scripts. Gunns DCU for dummies😂😂😂
ClarkJoeKent
ClarkJoeKent - 10/6/2026, 11:52 AM
@Awest66 - Gunns Superman is a Vilramite who was sent to earth to have SEX with the population & RULE THEM! While Henry Cavils SDuperman was sent to earth to help guide them so they won't make the same mistakes as the kryptonians.
Awest66
Awest66 - 10/6/2026, 6:04 PM
@ClarkJoeKent - Gunn'S Superman was raised to be a good person by the best pair of adoptive parents one could ever ask for.

Snyder's Superman was raised to be an amoral coward who allowed his adoptive father to die when he could've easily saved his life and who would have hid from the world for the rest of his life if Zod hadn't invaded.
Awest66
Awest66 - 10/6/2026, 6:09 PM
@ClarkJoeKent - Man of Steel was met with lukewarm reviews at best and didn't make anywhere near the box office WB was hoping for to the point where they made the next movie a Batman crossover. Superman 25 was both a box office and critical success and were getting a true sequel to it next year.

The cinematography of MOS was butt ugly. It's visuals are washed out and gray. Its fight scenes are honestly pretty boring because no one is actually getting hurt in them. It's like watching someone else play a video game.
Awest66
Awest66 - 10/6/2026, 6:15 PM
@ClarkJoeKent - It was also Superman who enlisted the Justice Gang to stop the invasion of Jarhanpur and he defeated both Ultraman and Engineer while Mr Terrific closed to out of control portal.

MOS did a really crap job of showing his journey to becoming Superman. He's a reckless brute with questionable morals throughout and never really gets past that at any point in the movie. I mean he defeats the villain by snapping his neck like a barbarian caveman.
ClarkJoeKent
ClarkJoeKent - 10/6/2026, 11:01 PM
@Awest66 - Man Of Steel was great writing showing his journey to becoming Superman. The suit makes sense, The "S" makes sense his flight scenes is the best ever filmed for Superman. Gunns Superman is a Beta male who whines & cry about being talked about on social media. Screaming at Lois & Lex..."Im HUMAN like you..😂😂😂" He was beaten by a clone who's remotely controlled by Lex? L1,R2,X,X,X before getting KICKED IN THE NUTZ...this dude been Superman for 3 years & cant fight smfh. He debated with Lois while a Kijou was destroying Metropolis..He saved a kid & a squirrel😂😂😂 Henry Cavill Superman showed up saving ppl on the ship, as a kid, He saved the army, defeated Kryptonians in Kansas, Beat Zod etc...all learning on the job in ONE DAY! In BvS he flew Doomsday to outer space cuz he learned from fighting Zod in Metropolis. Gunns Superman was sent to earth to rape woman & conquer the planet. He didn't enlist the Justice Gang in anything!!! They didn't [frick] with him! Guy Gardner & Mr Terrific constantly disrespected him & didn't need him for shit! Mr Terrific killed the Kijou, The Justice Gang stopped the war & Lois BEAT LEX. What did DIAPER MAN do? Not a damn thing but whine & fuss with Lex like a bitch before getting called a bitch before the movie ended by Supergirl. FITTING!
Even Krypton PISSED on his pic in the newspaper😂😂😂😂
Henry Cavill Superman is the alpha male...Gunns Super-Meh is a Beta Malke transgender😂😂😂

@Awest66 - It sold more tickets than Superman 2025 & is a better film. Look I understands your a hater...I was like you too. I hated on this film after reading comments from guys like you. The I watched it after Superman 2025 on HBO MAX & Im sorry..GUNNS Superman looks watered down, depowered & useless after watching Man Of Steel. It's not perfect but it was AWESOME,CINEMATIC & EPIC SCOPE Diaperman 2025 was over saturated with the color blue, forced comedy etc. It's not for me. It's for you. But theres not enough of you guys to support Gunns DC. Go buy Clayface tickets & stream Supergirl. Gunn needs you doing that Instead of trolling me😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@Awest66 - Sorry you need DC for dummies with a simple ChatGPT script. Clark father stopped him from saving him because he knew he'd get exposed to the world. He was a teenager & didn't know his powers yet. Man Of Steel is a first contact story says Christopher Nolan. Jonathan held his hand out stop, & shock his head no to clark. Gripping scene. Just like the scene when Petes mom showed up at the Kents after Clark save the kids on the bus. Jonathan warning Clark about using his abilities cuz ppl won't understand. It'll make them question religion. Powerful writing. Gunns Superman was raised by 2 goofy ppl in a trailer. Theres NO back story etc, I didn't feel anything between them. It didn't even look like they could've raised a Superman. They seemed dumb & goofy. But you can like what you like. BOTH fit;ms are on HBO & Gunns Superman sparked me to Man Of Steel. THANKS!
Awest66
Awest66 - 10/7/2026, 2:30 AM
@ClarkJoeKent - If someone is in danger, Superman would always save them. Nothing is more important to him than saving lives, not his secret, not whether or not it would make humanity "question religion", Nothing.

How exactly were the Kents in 25 "goofy"?. The scene between Clark and Jonathan is easily the most emotional scene of any Superhero movie ever made.
