Scrapped Green Lantern HBO Series Creator Reveals First Concept Art - And It's Less Dirt, More Stars

Marc Guggenheim has shared a first look at the scrapped Green Lantern series he was working on for DC Studios before the concept was reworked for the show that just finished up on HBO Max...

Before the idea was rejigged for the show that eventually became Lanterns, Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim were developing a very different take on Green Lantern for HBO.

Lee Toland Krieger was on board to helm the first two episodes, and the story was reportedly going to play out over multiple time periods, with Finn Wittrock set to play Guy Gardner for the '80s setting, and Jeremy Irvine in talks to play Alan Scott in the '40s.

Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and a new alien Lantern named Bree Jarta were also going to feature.

Now, Guggenheim has taken to his Substack to share our first look at the scrapped series - which may have ended up being titled Emerald Knights - via some concept art.

The artwork features several Green Lanterns doing battle in space, Wittrock as Gardner (minus the character's signature bowl cut), and Bree Jarta (this role had not been cast, but it looks like they may have used Janelle Monáe's likeness for the concept design).

"I have to reach into my memory to recall other bits of trivia like that," Guggenheim wrote. "But I do remember that our original take took place in two time periods and had the Manhunters as the primary villains and my original title pitch was Emerald Knights

Wittrock spoke about missing out on the role of Guy Gardner in a 2024 interview.

"I had like 20 Green Lantern comics sitting in my closet. I was starting to read the comics, my five-year-old son, would find the comics and be like 'Dad, what's this?' And I was like, 'Research from a project that never was.' But yeah, it gave me a great education, into Green Lantern already. And now, I'm kind of hooked on to the story."

"So, it was definitely, I won't say it didn't sting to find out the news that it wasn't happening," he continued. "But, I think it was nice because I got to realize what I would need to do to prepare for a role like that. So, hopefully, some other comic book role will, the one that's supposed to be, will come my way. And then at least like have some kind of heads up about how to enter that world."

Based on this artwork, do you think this would have been a better GL show than the one we got? Let us know in the comments.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

This was the series where they cast a dude who looks exactly like Kyle Rayner to play Guy. I seriously would love to sit down with these producers to find out if they are actually this stupid or just making these decisions to purposely fugg with the fans.

@BruceWayng - These were the same writers that cast Australians as Ra’s al Ghul and Deathstroke then cast a Lebanese actor as Captain Boomerang.

@BruceWayng - If you've seen how he acts in AHS, he would have definitely done a good job with Guy Gardner. While I don't think people would have liked this show either, I don't think it would have been his portrayal of Guy Gardner.

The story for this hilariously enough is kind of similar. Both were going to take place in two different time periods. Both explaining a mystery surrounding a past GL (in this case, Alan Scott) and both featured Manhunters as primary antagonists. Which means to mean that WB always had this in mind for years since the mid 2010's to actually produce this type of story.

Also Guy Gardner was going to be from the 1980's and was going to make Guy seem like the embodiment of male masculinity in the 1980's. And again, this actor would have for sure nailed that Guy Gardner chamred. If you watch him in S4 of AHS especially as Dandy Mott...yeah, can totally see him playing Guy just how he emotes his facial expressions.

Excellent trolling against the recent "Lanterns" "Show".

This probably story wise would have been quite bad too, but hey at least it does not look like it hates the fans.

Looks like they’re fighting the Spider Guild in the first photo.

This series would have been peak. And it was one of the first things James Gunn killed when he arrived.

The story concept is all over the place. And Guggenheim is certainly not to be trusted 95% of the time (enjoyed his JL: Dark Tomorrow comic though).

It would have been completely divorced from the source material in everything but aesthetic... but at least we would have had that...

I know it's possible to make a show that has BOTH sci-fi action and a likable Hal Jordan. I watched it in 2012.

Let's be honest, this show was always afraid of getting the Krypton treatment and never taken seriously and ending up just another generic sci-fi show that got cancelled. So they decided not to even try adapting it faithfully and tried to make it True Detective. They never wanted to make a Green Lantern show, they wanted the funding to recreate True Detective flavored by their writers childhood trauma.

Finn Wittrock would have been better as Kyle than as Guy.

The concept art is cool for the most part imo!!.

I don’t like Guy essentially being Hal visually with the costume & hair but otherwise I’m fine with the aesthetics otherwise and especially there’s alot of green & constructs that I’m sure make people happy who didn’t get enough of that for their taste in Lanterns…

The creative team I wasn’t fully sold on since Guggenheim I’d a mixed bag and I just wasn’t very familiar with Seth Grahame Smith.

I do like the two time periods angle with Guy & Alan seemingly investigating the Manhunters in 2 different time periods with various other Lanterns aswell as the title “Emerald Knights”!!.

I think they couldn’t use John & Hal since they wanted to use them in the movies at the time (we know Snyder was gonna introduce John as his main GL).

Anyway , I’m somewhat mixed on this overall but I think visually it would have likely given fans wanted they wanted moreso then Lanterns did!!.
