UPDATE: Lanterns Promo May Have Just Revealed A Major 2026 Hal Jordan Spoiler

A new Lanterns promo may have just added fuel to theories that all is not as it seems with Hal Jordan in 2026, but if that is the case, what does that mean for his future in the DCU?

UPDATE: Talking of Hal Jordan, HBO Max has just shared a gallery of photos from last Sunday's episode of Lanterns, showcasing his DCU superhero costume. This much closer look at the suit has reignited the debate over DC Studios' decision to give members of the Green Lantern Corps physical costumes they have to dress in, rather than those generated by their rings.

The series premiere of DC Studios' Lanterns ended with John Stewart discovering Hal Jordan's dead body in 2026. His ring was missing, and he'd been shot in the head, raising some big questions about what he was doing back in Nebraska and who's responsible.

Fan theories have dominated the conversation since then, with the main one being that it isn't really Hal. Instead, the hope is that one of the Manhunters or another alien capable of disguising themself as a human has, for some reason, taken the hero's place.

That would explain why the ring didn't seek out John Stewart, especially as a clip from Sunday's episode has confirmed he was the Guardians of the Universe's first choice to protect Earth as its Green Lantern.

A new promo for Lanterns has just been released, and right at the end, there's a very interesting shot of the 2026 Hal waking up in what may be a prison uniform. It doesn't match what Sinestro was wearing in space, so they haven't switched places or anything like that, but this still lends some weight to theories that Hal is alive and locked up somewhere.

Of course, even if Hal is alive, it begs the question of what his role in the DCU is moving forward. We know John will become Green Lantern in time for next summer's Man of Tomorrow, so is Hal just going to retire? Or will DC Studios follow the comics and have him head down a villainous route as Parallax? It's also worth noting that this could be a scene from the hours leading up to his very real death.

"I think just Damon [Lindelof] basically said the most meaningful thing that could happen would be if Hal had died," showrunner Chris Mundy previously explained. "What else do we care about more than that? And then it instantly felt like that would be incredible to get to try to write to, if the powers that be were willing to let us write to it."

Co-creator Tom King added that both Hal's death and his missing ring "raise the stakes" and "has consequences that reverberate throughout the rest of the universe for a long time."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

The first two episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

I wouldn’t put it past them for the Hal we’ve been following to be an alien. His personality is so different from the projection we saw from the ring, granted that was supposed to be 10 years before(?), I think.

I feel like that’s what all the rules surrounding things are pushing us

@MyCoolYoung - this seems more like it's about how a person can change from life. You know like a story for adults to reflect on life not a live action saturday morning cartoon. Those can be good but i don't think its this shows style

@MyCoolYoung - do we know when Sinestro went bad?.

If not I could see Hal becoming more cynical and jaded between 2016-2026 if that’s when Sinestro turned.

@TheVisionary25 - that too. I'm excited to see how the mystery play out. I wish we would've gotten multiple episodes at once because of the slow burn but we can always get what we want 😅

I like Kyle Chandler. I like his portrayal of Hal.
I'm equally disappointed(?) by it.

The format of this show would have been more suited for The Question, rather than Green Lantern.

@Relativity - there's more to GL than space. He's been around for a while. The real crime is he hasn't had more adaptations already when they've had so many Batman ones that he's been an Aztec

Every single thing about the characters of Hal and John in this show are complete dog sh!t.

These hacks will have destroyed Green Lantern for at least another decade.

@DocSpock -

Please do tell me how amazing your shitty Spiderman movie was. It doesn't even make any sense other than just cramming a bunch of characters in a movie.

Doomsday will also be a huge pile of shit.

The main issue is you can replace the Lanterns with Gordon and Bullock and the show wouldn’t feel that much different.

While I take great joy in this dogshit version of GL going nowhere and further proving my points on the [frick]ass show runners who hate the source material, I'm watching CIVIL WAR and forgot how [frick]ing good it was.

They ruined the whole [frick]ing CBM genre.

The grey in his hair seems more pronounced so the one waking up in a prison outfit could be 2026 Hal which would be interesting…

I have a weird theory in that given the shot we get of Hal in some sort of beam grabbed by someone’s arm around his neck , I wonder if he gets teleported somewhere which is why John doesn’t have the ring in the 2026 timeline is because Hal went missing with it.

Anyway , I have quite liked the series so far so can’t wait to see tomorrows episode & beyond!!.

You are all forgetting that Hal and John are gonna end up in a physical fight soon as the extended look trailer at S1 showed us after the 1st episode and it's brutal. John was wearing different clothes there but eventually ends up walking out while carrying the power battery lantern as he is, apparently, arrested by Macon's people.

Don't be so surprised if Hal waking up from that shot in Gunn's tweet is the aftermath of that and in Macon's ranch.

And even if that was false and it's a hint of Hal being alive in 2026 it still cuts undermining the stakes of the show and Gunn's own words of "if you die in the DCU, you are dead". If Lindelof and the others chicken out after throwing that ending of the 1st episode and it's a fake out, how will we take this seriously when Hal does die in the future?

It's an alley with no way out. Better just stick to what they did and keep Old Man Hal death. As sad as it'd be to confirm that they let a golden opportunity to explore him more what is at stake here is the DCU's risks and if they'll be taken seriously or not.

@NinnesMBC - sure but what if Hal isn’t dead in the first place?.

I feel like “if you die in the DCU , then you’re dead” only applies if you actually die and I don’t think they would do some resurrection thing on Hal if he was indeed gone.

Also it’s a mystery and one of them
Is finding out what happened to Hal so it’s not chickening out if we get a different reveal since all mysteries have misdirects which Hal’s “death” would be then.

Also if Hal is indeed alive by the end of this season , there’s no automatic given thing that we will see him die in the future since we don’t know their future plans so that’s just an assumption you’re making.

@NinnesMBC - Then “if you die in the DCU, you are dead" would imply that he didn’t die.

"'I think just Damon [Lindelof] basically said the most meaningful thing that could happen would be if Hal had died,' showrunner Chris Mundy previously explained."

The only reason that was even suggested is because Hal is easily the most likable and has more stories worth telling. If you haven't told these storylines then you won't get anything from having the character die because it'd be fricking meaningless to anyone not exposed to all that history.
