Earlier this week, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that John Cena's Peacemaker, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, and Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes will all be part of the new DCU.
That lined up with what we'd already heard about the filmmaker's plans for this relaunch, though there are many fans questioning why these actors are being given a second chance when the likes of Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are not. It is what it is at this point, but another name can now be added to the list of returnees.
Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn confirmed that Peacemaker star Freddie Stroma is set to reprise his role as Vigilante.
This isn't a massive surprise because it was back in July when the director said we should expect to see the deranged anti-hero "probably before Peacemaker 2." We'd assume the idea is for him to show up in Waller, with that series bridging the gap between both seasons of Peacemaker.
Chris Conrad was originally cast as Vigilante but left the series after shooting several episodes due to apparent creative differences. Stroma was then enlisted to replace him and received widespread acclaim for his work (despite this take on the character taking some liberties with the source material).
"Peacemaker quickly establishes itself as essential viewing for fans of The Suicide Squad," we said in our season 1 review, "but it's a career-best performance from John Cena and the greatest opening credits of all time that will make sure you want to come back each week."
Peacemaker follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad - a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
The cast includes John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.
Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directed five, including the first. Gunn, Peter Safran and Matt Miller serve as executive producers on the series, with John Cena as co-executive producer and Stacy Littlejohn as consulting producer. Based on characters from DC, Peacemaker is produced by Gunn's Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.
The series was renewed for a second season last February but doesn't have a confirmed release date (we're not expecting to see it for at least another two or three years). The first eight episodes of Peacemaker are currently streaming on Max.
