SWAMP THING: Bill Skarsgård Rumored To Be In Line To Play The Lead Role

We have our first casting rumor for James Mangold's planned Swamp Thing movie here, and it claims that none other than Bill Skarsgård is in the running to play Alec Holland...

We recently reported on a rumor that It and John Wick Chapter 4 actor Bill Skarsgård might be up for a key role in an upcoming DCU project, and we may now know which character he's being eyed to play.

There was speculation that he could be in contention for a new take on the Joker, one of the members of The Authority, or possibly even Batman in The Brave and the Bold, but The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider has heard that the versatile actor is actually being looked at to play Alec Holland, aka Swamp Thing!

We don't know if Skarsgård is actually in talks for the part, or he's just someone the studio is interested in, but it seems a little early for this project to be casting (Mangold is still working on his Bob Dylan biopic), so we'd say the latter is more likely.

We're not too sure what to expect from this latest live-action take on the big green fella, but we do know that the film will “investigates the dark origins of Swamp Thing.” Gunn also confirmed that Swamp Thing will be "a much more horrific film, but we’ll still have Swamp Thing interact with the other characters.”

The Earth Elemental and John Constantine are closely-connected characters in the comics, and with Keanu Reeves (possibly) set to reprise the title role for a sequel to 2005's Constantine, fans are hoping for an eventual crossover - potentially building towards a Justice League Dark movie.

Hmm I wouldn't mind him in the role, other than Swamp Thing he could be a good DC HUSH ,Eclipso ,or Etrigan

He’s alright but i feel like adam driver would have been perfect for both Alec Holland and the voice/mo-cap for Swamp Thing. But he’s more than likely gonna be Reed Richards for the next decade, so it would be unlikely

If they’re doing JL Dark and Gunn doesn’t even ask Bill Hader about show-running and starring in a Deadman Max show it’d be a missed opportunity

@tmp3 - Hader and the cast of BARRY for anything they want. More Fuches and more Jim Moss, please.

@tmp3 - that would be great! Fuches descends into the sewers after the ending of S4. Haha, that’s a crossover I’d be into.

@Dotanuki - I was not a fan it the finale and last 3 episodes, it seems they skipped forward to tell a bigger story, which was great, but it felt random. I really hated the finale lol but it made sense

Should just bring back Andy Bean and Crystal Reed from the TV show.

The only flaw in that production was going overboard with the budget to create it's own swamp stage. The tax thing was IIRC out of their own control.

@NinnesMBC - Bring back Dick Durock!

Seriously, though if they're doing the Parliament of trees then wouldn't it be fcuking awesome to cast previous Swamp Things/Man Things etc, like Dick Durock and Andy Bean, as members of the Parliament? That'd be pretty neat.

@IcePyke @xHAUSMAN01 - Well now you guys are just typecasting Bill Skaarsgard for any role that calls for white face paint and red lipstick. Typical. 😉

@IcePyke - Just kidding there man. Aside from Pennywise and Joker I actually can't think of any other white faced red lipped characters he could play. Oh, wait! Maybe whenever they finally get around to making that long-awaited Bozo the Clown biopic. Damn it! Now I'm doing the type-casting (hangs head in shame). 😉

Well.... my first reaction was one of momentary disappointment because I can't instantly imagine what he would do with the role so I thought this might be a bad fit.

But suddenly it hit me.... Bill is... a craftsman. His Pennywise was a definite SOLID CHOICE, he swung creatively with a very WIDE SWING and happened to knock it out of the park and established himself as an extremely talented artist. That was a deliberately crafted character, and it was original and astounding.

Maybe... just maybe... Bill is about to give us a Swampy unlike what we can image or comprehend currently. He could very well redefine Swampy as vividly as he chose to restyle Pennywise. I'm not saying he's going to make his Swampy like Pennywise, not at all. It's like Luke Skywalker and The Joker, Mark has the range to embody different characteristics.

So maybe we are in for a treat. Something familiar, yet fresh. 🤔

Ok..... okay let's see where this goes!

And actually now that I think about Hemlock Grove, he does interesting character work with monster type characters. I'm looking to seeing another dimension to his work, another character for him to embody.

I think he would be a perfect Batman.

Ever since the rumor a few days ago, he's shot to the top of my list. Reteaming with Andy Muschietti for Batman would be something else. I hope there are some horror elements to this new Batman and they keep it mostly dark. If they go light or camp for Batman it's all over. The whole DCU, I mean.

Remember your biggest competition is The Batman. It's literally the same character.

They gotta outdo the Reeves stuff. Bill Skaarsgard in a movie that is dark, but also has supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi elements and can exist in a fantasy world with superheroes would be an easy win.

@ObserverIO - You are making a lot of sense to me here.
I think this might be the best tact for Gunn's Batman.

Sounds right. Not so sold on Skaarsgard particularly. But wouldn't be upset if he got cast as Bruce either.
