GAME OF THRONES: HBO Developing More Prequels, Including TALES OF DUNK AND EGG

There's some exciting news for Game of Thrones fans today as HBO is said to be moving forward with even more prequels, including Tales of Dunk and Egg. Find out more details on that after the jump...

Variety reports that HBO is developing another Game of Thrones prequel, this time based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg from author George R.R. Martin. Those follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and a young Aegon V Targaryen, and the story is set 90 years before the events of the main series.

We don't have a creative team for this one yet, but it sounds like a priority for the cable network.

HBO has, however, been meeting with a number of writers to hear pitches based on Martin's work, with one possible idea revolving around Robert's Rebellion, the war for the Iron Throne that threw Westeros into chaos decades before Game of Thrones takes place. This was an event that was frequently referenced, and we'd likely see younger versions of some familiar faces.

One writer who has met with HBO is Bruno Heller, and he's best known for shows like Gotham and Rome.

Those of you hoping to revisit Game of Thrones may be disappointed, though, as only prequels are currently being developed (not sequels and spinoffs). This isn't the first time HBO has focused on prequels, as they previously put five of them into active development. House of the Dragon is on the way, but a pilot starring Naomi Watts never moved forward.

Martin has published three novellas in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series - "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," and "The Mystery Knight." Fans have been hoping they'll be adapted for a while.

We'll see. It'll take a great amount for me to get excited for this franchise again.

@Vanillain - why. its excellent.

even at its worst season 7 and 8, its better than 90 percent of shows.

Something smaller scale like this could be the way forward for generating buzz for the franchise again.

I’ve always thought it’s better to start a show with smaller stakes, than high stakes - that way you can craft the show as it develops, but mainly focusing on the emotion of the characters, just like GOT Season 1 did.

I still think the logical thing HBO should do is wait another 5-10 years, and make a much needed sequel series to fix that godawful last season, exactly what Dexter is planning to do.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - But HBO needs to goose it's streaming content NOW. Streaming wars won't wait 5-10 years.

-That being said, GoT is not going to be the cornerstone franchise it once was/was expected to be. It didn't just end with a disappointing season; it ended with a disappointing culmination to years of storylines. Fans will not be overly interested in getting burned again.

@Rosraf - yes it needs to goose it’s streaming now, but that doesn’t mean this can’t come out in 5-10 years?

Streaming wars isn’t some final resort for TV to die or survive, it’s just the new normal for watching TV. And it’ll be around in 10+ years time like any other normal technological evolution.

Pass. GoT was great while it was following the books, as soon as it didnt anymore the show went of the rails due to shitty writing. Character arcs just goin to shit. I was really interested into seeing the Night Kings origins which they teased in season 6 i think then just completely abandoned it.
So not expecting anything good since its not following any books

@RokoVII - well Dunk and Egg has all the source material they need already.

@RokoVII - HBO agrees with you.

Both Dragon and Dunk/Egg will be adapted from already established literature.

Whereas the ‘Long Night’ was an original prequel and they axed that after the Pilot.

@IronGenesis - oh so they axed that? Didnt know, good lol

@RegularPoochie - in that case, good

Dunk and Egg? From the that title alone it sounds shit.

@marvel72 - maybe read it before bashing it.

@RegularPoochie - As I said from that title alone.

It sounds shit,it may well be good but the title doesn't sound like it's going to be good.

I like this, the story is so cool.

I like this, a low scale, less brutal series is what they should have followed GOT with from the start. Only Aemon and Bloodraven reappear from GOT, and they’re going to be unrecognizable here. It’s perfect for a show!

I know they didn’t like the pilot that starred Naomi Watts but I wish they hadn’t scrapped the idea completely. Of all the prequel ideas I’ve heard that was the one that sounded most interesting, not that I’m not interested in House of the Dragon. But dammit I wanted both.
