GAME OF THRONES Prequel To Be Set Thousands Of Years Before Original Series; Jane Goldman On Board As Writer

HBO is moving ahead with a pilot episode for one of five potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, and intriguing details on what is set to be a prequel to the current show have now been revealed.

It seems the new series will take place back when White Walkers and the Children of the Forest still roamed freely in Westeros, as it's reportedly set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones.

HBO has released a synopsis:

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.”

Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) is teaming up with A Song of Ice and Fire author author George R.R. Martin to write and show-run the series, which doesn't currently have a title.

What do you guys make of this news? Are you glad it'll be set around the Age of Heroes, or would you have preferred to see a few familiar faces? Sound off below.

@aflynn - totally agree. I hope it touches on how old Valyria fell and we see how all the Valyrian swords were made

As a big fan of Game of Thrones I have no interest in this. Idk why either I just don’t care. However, the thousands of years before the series approach should definitely be used by Star Wars *cough Old Republic *cough.

@BreakTheCode - They should set this a few decades before the show to when most of the cast are infants. Call it Game of Babies.

@Scripturepoetic - Can't really go there when I'm talking about a prequel about infants. That's how you get on some lists buddy.

I hope it centers around one character. Don't mind multiple characters, it would just be a nice change of pace.

They’d need brilliant writers for any of these to succeed. The world of Thrones isn’t what makes it good. Hell, it’s pretty generic, your average fantasy crap. Meticulously thought out lore of dragons, races, medieval-style history. You can get all that from any of a million stories with LOTR trappings. But it’s all just dorky fantasy stuff.

Game of Thrones is great because of the characters and operatic storytelling that goes on top of all that. Which is very unique to Martin. It’s not a formula you can copy, he’s just a great writer and that’s it. Look at the quality of the dialogue since the show passed the point of the books. Massive decrease. Last few seasons have just been standard fantasy crap.

All the shows who have tried to be the next ‘Game of Thrones’ have tried what they think is just a formula. Westworld, for example. Luckily it became just as good, but it never became the ‘next Thrones’ they were looking for. It became something different but great. They figure ‘nudity + brutality + intersecting storylines + intricate world building+ heaps of characters etc = GOT. Nope. It’s just good writing.

Whatever they create in Westeros is just gonna feel like some fantasy LOTR rip off without great writers .

The history of game of thrones is acutally pretty damn interesting. it does not have elves and faires stuff. It has heroic figure and real history with thought put into it.

Jane Goldman? Game of Thrones?

SOLD!

To... um, to me!

This will be the exact reverse of Fear the Walking Dead.
(As in a prequel series to a popular show that does not suck)

@GwenLantern - but... Fear the Walking Dead is WAY better than The Walking Dead...
