George R.R. Martin On 'GAME OF THRONES' SDCC And The Red Viper

Over at his personal blog, famed fantasy writer and "Game of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin discussed a season 4 cast addition that will have readers of his fantasy series very excited. Said Martin, "I wasn't present for Pedro Pascal's audition, but I understand that he really killed it with his reading. And since his casting was announced, the producer of another TV show on which he appeared recently has written me to say how terrific Pascal is, and to congratulate us on the casting. So I suspect that he will turn out to be a wonderful Red Viper." And jumping ahead even further, Martin also commented on the Red Viper's daughters, the Sand Snakes, that will surely be making an appearance on the show at some point. "When and if the show introduces Prince Oberyn's daughters, the Sand Snakes, I expect we will see the same diversity as in the books, ranging from Tyene (blond and blue-eyed) to Sarella (light brown skin, as her mother was a Summer Islander). And I expect that the crew of the CINNAMON WIND will all be cast with black actors... assuming, of course, that Sam's voyage remains in the story." If you only watch the television show you're probably scratching your head at Martin's statement but readers of the books will definitely be excited by the news, especially at the prospect of potentially seeing the 'Sand Snakes'.

The author also outed some of the planned details of the show's San Diego Comic Con panel. Stating, "My dance card is already almost full. Yes, there will be a GAME OF THRONES panel, and I’ll be on it. It is scheduled for Friday, July 19, 2:50 to 3:45, in Hall H To be followed by an autographing at the WB booth. Of course, I’ll be joined on the panel by half a dozen cast members (no, don’t know which ones yet) and David and Dan." Perhaps some of the new cast additions will be in attendance and maybe even a few that you thought you'd never see again...

"Season 4 of Game of Thrones was formally commissioned by HBO on April 2, 2013 after viewer ratings showed a substantial increase between the second and third season openers. Due to the sheer length of the third novel, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of the first novel, the events of "A Storm of Swords" was split between season 3 and the upcoming season 4. However, Season 4 may also contain some material from the fourth and fifth books as some of those events happen concurrently to events taking place in "A Storm of Swords." In the wake of the Red Wedding, how does the North pick up the pieces and with their greatest enemy seemingly crushed, where does that leave the Lannisters. Daenerys Targaryen now has an army but is she ready to take back her homeland. Does Jon Snow turn south to seek revenge or remember his duty along the Wall?"
