DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Star Charlie Cox Expects The Show To Retell Key Events From Netflix's DAREDEVIL

Talking about Marvel Studios' plans for Daredevil: Born Again, Charlie Cox suggests the MCU might put a fresh spin on certain events from the Netflix series, reiterating that the show is a fresh start...

Marvel Studios and Marvel Television's various projects were developed completely independently of each other, though the former had the final say when it came to which characters could be used. M.O.D.O.K. was deemed off-limits to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., for example, but now all big and small screen projects go through Kevin Feige.

With the Darkhold reintroduced in WandaVision but the same actors playing Daredevil and The Kingpin in the MCU, fans have a lot of continuity questions.

The current belief is that the Marvel Television stories took place in a separate reality, freeing Marvel Studios up to pick and choose what they want from those stories without being beholden to them. As for the Man Without Fear himself, Charlie Cox, he seems to believe that Daredevil: Born Again will very much be its own thing.

"I'm psyched to discover what stories they're gonna tell over that long period of time [between Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again]," the actor tells Entertainment Tonight. "Tonally what it's going to be like. How is it different, how is it the same. You know, Kevin has been very clear about it being season 1, not a season 4. It's a whole new deal."

"And, in a way, what's great about that is that we potentially get to tell some of the stories over and over again in the same way that they do in the comics, you know. Every now and again, they start back at the beginning of Murdock's journey as a little boy and they tell the whole origin story again. So maybe we'll get to do that, I don't know."

That last point is very interesting, particularly if it gives Marvel Studios the opportunity to go back and get characters like Elektra and Bullseye right.

The former's story was handled disastrously in Daredevil, and with eighteen episodes to tell this story in, there's a lot about this hero Born Again can improve upon. With the series not heading to Disney+ until 2024, it will probably be a while before we learn what's in store for Matt Murdock in the MCU, though She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was a great tease.

Are there any moments from Daredevil you're hoping to see a fresh spin on in the MCU?

The really is no reason to tell stories again.

@Unites -They will need to at least position all the characters storylines, even because the netflix series was rated M and part of the audience didn't watch it.

@Unites - I can see a very good reason to do Elektra and The Hand over again. Plus getting better versions of Gladiator and Owlsley.

Look, I was a huge fan of Netflix Daredevil. But it's disingenuous to claim it was perfect.

@Unites -
We have been retelling stories over and over for all of recorded history. A good story can be adapted to whatever time it is told in.

@Unites - Exactly, it's not like Daredevil was responsible for the Defenders movie being...whatever it was. I would have preferred them glossing over it, maybe with MCU version flashbacks, but now they've put their selves in the position of having to knock it out of the park because the Netflix series was good.

Just give us Gladiator and Bullseye in costume. And a decent Typhoid Mary this time.

I mean, it even says between daredevil and daredevil born again.

Besides, I think it's dumb to effectively reboot it but keep the same actors acting the same and, in daredevils case, in a recolor version of the same suit.

I would like it if they didn’t retell the first season. But I’d be ok with seeing more of the Punisher and Electra stuff as well as the Bullseye stuff. It’d be cool if King Pin and DareDevil already have their rivalry.

I thought Netflix did the origin really well. I still remember sitting down and watching the first episode of season 1 and being completely blown away.

We should hear more about the cast i guess soon. I hope Bullseye is back, and Karen. Foggy i assume will be. Karen is a different case because Matt has many girlfriends they could put in. But i hope for Deborah to be back.

There are two options I'd think would work well.

Option 1 (the cheapest): release a recut version of the DD Netflix series on D+ and call it a prelude. Basically, just let Marvel Studios pick and choose what elements of the original they want to keep, and cut out some of the more mature content. Obviously still keep the original series available, but this could be a fun way to get people to rewatch, or intro the series to a new audience.

Option 2 (less cheap): Film a recap of DD's history via flashbacks, but reshoot them to happen slightly different enough to explain things like DD running down the side of a wall. This could be a framing devices for Born Again episode 1, in which Matt recounts his past to a new character or something, before setting up his new plotline.

Of course, there's always the option of just never addressing it. Which would be fine, but it seems the laziest. Going with either option above would at least set the record straight(er) about the Netflix continuity.

What I would hate is if they outright contradict big events from the Netflix series. Like if Daredevil never met the Punisher, or something like that.

I guess we'll see.

@SheepishOne - I like option 1. Keep the things that worked, while giving a condensed way for people that didn't watch it (or want a recap) to see it. Certain things were near perfect and others would benefit from a retelling (Elektra and The Hand specifically). Best of both worlds. It's already quite obvious that the MCU version is a variant that is just similar to the Netflix version. I don't get why some people are fighting that.

@SheepishOne - they could do a subtle and minimalist retelling similar to how Raimi would retro the prior Spidey movie in his opening credits.

Do the retelling in the art style to mirror Matt’s radar sense. If you wanna lean into the comics, have it look like how Waid and Rivera did it (which I think is the best depiction of it)

No need to retell stories entirely again. However, I expect certain tweaks here and there to align more with the comics in some aspects.

I would like to see more of Matt’s tutelage under Stick. Really enjoyed those scenes in the Netflix series and always thought there was room to explore more.

But they got Bullseye and Elektra right. Especially Bullseye. I'd bring his actor back, at least.

I also think one of the biggest mistakes they made was killing off Ben Urich.

Don’t do that. The show already covered that ground so well. Just press forward. You’ve got Bullseye right there waiting in the wings.
