Why Is Daredevil: Born Again Ending With Season 3? New Details Emerge Along With Likely Explanation

MCU fans have been left reeling by the news that Daredevil: Born Again will end in 2027, but is it a cancellation, why is the series ending now, and what does this mean for Season 3?

Earlier today, the news broke that Daredevil: Born Again will end with Season 3. While not strictly a cancellation, Marvel Studios has brought its Daredevil revival to a definitive conclusion.

Perhaps it was to be expected. Season 3 already comes at an awkward time, as it’s set to be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While the story will obviously take place before Earth-616's expected destruction, anything released between the two movies somewhat lessens the impact of Doctor Doom's victory.

Plus, when exactly would Season 4 arrive? Marvel Television is eager to commit to yearly series, but a fourth batch of episodes for a pre-Secret Wars show coming along when the likes of X-Men and Ghost Rider are meant to set the tone for an all-new, all-different MCU doesn't really work. With that, there goes Daredevil.

Deadline has shared additional insights, revealing that Daredevil: Born Again's cast was informed this morning that the series would not return for a fourth season. As we previously reported, Marvel Studios decided not to renew showrunner Dario Scardapane’s contract, meaning post-production is underway without him at the helm. None of the trades is currently aware of who is steering the ship in his absence.

While the series received positive reviews, the viewership just wasn’t there. According to the trade, "Daredevil: Born Again came out strong ratings-wise in its first season, racking up the best series premiere on Disney+ for 2025, with 7.5 million viewers worldwide in its first five days. US viewership dropped about 50% in Season 2." That’s a significant decline.

Blame poor marketing, a first season that was comprised of two conflicting visions (due to a creative overhaul), or a miscalculation on Marvel's part that more than just die-hard fans wanted a follow-up to a Netflix series that ended in 2018. Whatever the case may be, Daredevil: Born Again was originally announced as an 18-episode single season, so it has managed to exceed that and at least match the original show's run of three seasons.

Interestingly, while both we and the cast only learned of this news today, scooper @MyTimeToShineH has claimed that Marvel Studios made the decision midway through shooting. As a result, "they're killing off a lot of important characters" in the build to what is now a series finale.

Where does this leave Daredevil? Charlie Cox made his official MCU debut in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, and later had cameo roles in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo (Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin appeared in the latter and Hawkeye). Hopefully, Kevin Feige hasn't lost faith in the characters and will take note of how much fans want to see Daredevil share the screen with Tom Holland's Spider-Man.

If not, it will be a real shame to say goodbye to the Man Without Fear again. The Punisher made a huge impact in Spider-Man: Brand New Day after previously being relegated to streaming, so there's no reason Daredevil can't do the same...

I feel bad for the people who really liked this show but I just could NOT get into it at all. I stopped after the first four episodes of S1 and I just never had the urge to return. It's not as engaging as it once was when it was on Netflix, nor did it seem unique or new to have a Marvel show be a streaming series like it was before.

To me, Daredevil: BA felt bland and felt like one of those legacy sequels that has this unique following of fans but never quite matches up to the success it once had.

Either way, I hope Daredevil can get a movie or at least appear as a supporting role *cough* Spider-Man movie *cough*

@Irregular - You sound too hard to please. It’s literally the same show that was on Netflix just a different distributor that’s it. Maybe stick to watching the 2003 movie and the 2005 spinoff with electra. Born again was fine. Perfect? No but engaging and entertaining nonetheless it delivered. People like you expect too much, want too much and you’re never satisfied, ever too busy complaining. You’ll get the proverbial Spider-Man team up but the day that happens you’ll still complain.

@UceOmega - Dario Scardapane, is that you?

Idk why you're so upset telling me to watch the 2003 movie like what LOL? Maybe you should have done a BETTER JOB DARIO!? There is no way I felt way more engaged in a 50 minute short film (Punisher) than I did with one of my favorite Marvel characters that they've spent well over 13 hours of AND IT HAPPENED...It's not my fault the show isn't there, hell why don't you go tell off the other 50% of viewers who wiped their ass with Disney's show?

It's not even CLOSE to the same as the 2015 Netflix show. Maybe you should get more upset at Disney failing you. Go up into their office, straight up Stephen Amell and you tell them

I feel the same way. Though I watch it through the end of season 2, I still agree. It had a handful of moments. But as a whole it doesn’t even get close to what the first three seasons had. Maybe they’ll wrap it up well in S3, but 🤷

@ModernAudience - Yeah I tried and I had a lot of patience if I sat through four episodes. And it just never got better for me. Hands down S1 of Daredevil from the Netflix era was the best that Daredevil was IMO.

@JustAWaffle - Yeah you had a lot more patience than me, I just couldn't do it. Granted a lot of the D+ shows are not hitting it for me either. I've seen less than half of them and the half I did see disappointed me greatly.

But my hope is, he just goes to the silver screen where he belongs. And if they're worried about people caring about him, well Spider-Man is the PERFECT launching point for him. Daredevil in a sequel of Spider-Man? A sequel to a movie that made over 2 BILLION? Easy!

@Irregular - as a daredevil fan, and a fan of the chip zdarski stuff that clearly inspired the show, I was disappointed.
Not enough daredevil, season 2 was the bullseye show pretty much, too similar to what we saw on Netflix. There’s some solid stuff in there but ultimately a waste of crossover potential and lack of cool rogues. The people that appear are…the same as the Netflix series! Womp womp.

100% the blame was on that lame ass first season, no daredevil action for half the season in a REVIVAL? They [frick]ed it up

LOL. [frick] off. He made his MCU debut in Dardevil Season 1, 2015.

Honestly if the cast was informed this morning that there wouldn’t be a fourth season , it makes me think perhaps they expected to come back so BA S3 might conclude in an open ended manner which would suck especially if we don’t know if/when they would return…

However given that Dario Scardapene who was the showrunner/head writers contract was already up hence him no longer being involved in the show (wouldn’t be surprised if Brad Winderbaum himself is overseeing the final season post production given it’s apparently in its final stages) , that gives me some hope that he was able to conclude the story he wanted to tell atleast properly just in case he or they didn’t come back so fingers crossed!!.

Oh and I hope the rumor of them killing off alot of characters in BA S3 isn’t true just to keep the door open for future Daredevil/Defenders adventures.

Having said all that…

I’m looking forward to VisionQuest and BA S3 (I thought S1 was solid and liked S2 quite a bit) as the last 2 projects in this chapter of live action Marvel Television so hopefully they end it well!!.

This would be better than nothing.

It always felt like this was gonna be done after 3 seasons even before Marvel maybe pulling back on tv shows. No other series has even gotten a second season so this getting 3 is fine with me.

The Netflix series was the best, especially seasons 1 & 3. But when Disney/Marvel got their hands on it, it tanked, and it all started when they killed off Foggy Nelson. By far that was one the worst decisions they ever made, and many of us turned it off right then and there. As many others here have said, it's time DD got a movie. Whether or not Charlie Cox comes in to play the character will be up to the powers at be to decide, but the character deserves it.

Daredevil needed more Crossover characters. Like Cage, Jones, or Spider-Man since MM appeared in his movie. She hulk even. Don’t get me wrong Punisher but we’ve been watching them 2 dance for a few years especially with Fisk.

Because you had a bunch of talentless hacks trying to do an impresion of the Netfilx show.

Almost the entire first series had to be scrapped. They introduced a bunch of characters because they wanted to tell their own stories and not one of those characters hit. No one cared about them.

The writing in S2 wasn't an improvement. The same characters no one cared about were present so there were too many characters. The ending was nonsense written by people who don't understand the law so they just made shit up. Its too bad. There is genuine chemistry with the OG cast. Maybe we will get a movie. You can just let Cox's Daredevil die. Use Secret Wars, bring Foggy back and get real writers who have more than a goal than to fill every other scene with diverse characters that say the F word a lot. Maybe we dont need Kingpin to be a cuck to his wife who cheated on him. This show was side railed by girl boss bullshit.

Man...what the actual f**k is going on over there at the House of Mouse? All these recent fumbles are why I'm finding it hard to get excited for the new X-Men, and they're my favorite. Maybe it's time for Feige to go idk. 👀

They got caught on the chase for "prestige drama" fórmula with Fisk vs Murdock endless war and and big season arc, when Matt Murdock/Daredevil lent itself to an actionized versión of Law & Order SUV.

Another error was not integrating the Holland Spiderman Movies with Daredevil on Hollands the Hand was used freely but on Daredevil they were always doing it with fear of loosint this "prestige drama " vibe.

How the hell could Disney fumble Daredevil (a character with a large number of great runs that are very easily adaptable to live action) this bad not once, not twice, but about four or five times?? I mean, let's just list them:

1) The original cancellation of the Netflix series, instead of simply renewing the contract with them, all because they wanted to take the character to their own streaming service... only to do nothing with him for YEARS.

2) By the time they finally pulled it together and decided to do something with the character, instead of fully commiting to either continuing the origina series or starting fully fresh, they tried tohave their cake and eat it too-- which resulted in an original conception for the show so poorly received internally that it led to...

3) A Frankentstein aberration of a first season, that very much felt like a mish-mash of conflicting visions and juvenile writing trying to pass as mature. If the series'd been a ship, it'd have been one riddled with holes and helmed by a captain known for making a PUNISHER series nobody remembers (I mean, there IS a reason why Bernthal's best known Punisher scenes all came from DD-S2 prior to Spider-Man: BND...).

4) Then, they contracted that same man, Dario Scardapane, for TWO subsequent seasons. Season 2 quickly showed the same problems as the showrunner's Punisher series: the shallow writing and aura farming being mistaken for maturity... by the people behind the camera, because the audiences sure didn't buy it.

5) Instead of stopping on their tracks and reevaluating, Disney moved ahead with that same guy for the remaining season in his contract, only to FIRE HIM MID-POST PRODUCTION (that sure will go well...) and then cancelling the whole series yet again.

Of course, Disney PR will blame it on poor ratings (yeah, that hasn't really stopped them before) and "not fitting within the events going on in the wider MCU" (remember how deeply integrated the original Netflix series was in the wider MCU? Yeah, me neither, cause it wasn't -- and it was all the better for it). Even the excuse of cancelling it because otherwise it would lessen the impact of the events on AVENGERS DOOMSDAY sounds like BS--they could have just put the series on hold and seized the opportunity to regroup and better strategize where to go next with the story, and come back after SECRET WARS. But nah, they're "cancelling" it...

Maybe it's a PR move and they'll come back after Secret Wars with a name like "DAREDEVIL MAN WITHOUT FEAR" or some such thing -- once again not having learnt anything from their mistakes and trying to sell the same juvenile, poorly written crap as brand new through intense PR campaigning.

Hope I'm proven wrong. It'd be a pleasant surprise.
