Talk about an epic mind trip.

Critics have been heaping all kinds of praise on FX's Legion for a few weeks now and last night, fans worldwide were finally able to get their first taste of the Noah Hawley creation in a 90-minute premiere so chock full of twists and turns that you may just need to rewatch it a time or three to fully grasp what you just witnessed.

Next week's installment will have David Haller familiarizing himself with his mysterious new environment, reflecting on his cloudy past with the help of Syd and some of her new friends. Check out the promo for "Chapter 2," below:

"Chapter 2" (Airs February 15, 10:00 pm e/p) - David reflects on his past with the help of new friends. Written by Noah Hawley; directed by Michael Uppendahl.

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens) – a troubled young man who may be more than human.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which he must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees are the result of him being a mutant.

A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. Eventually, Syd guides David to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), a nurturing but demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. She and her team of specialists – Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), Kerry (Amber Midthunder) and Cary (Bill Irwin) – open David’s eyes to an extraordinary new world of possibilities.

Legion features:
Dan Stevens as David Haller
Rachel Keller as Syd Barrett
Jean Smart as Melanie
Aubrey Plaza as Lenny Busker
Jeremie Harris as Ptonomy Wallace
Amber Midthunder as Kerry Loudermilk
Katie Aselton as Amy Haller
Bill Irwin as Cary Loudermilk
Jemaine Clement in an undisclosed role

@heyer815 - Same. They did a ridiculously amazing job putting you in his head so you were questioning what was real just like he was.

I got the overall point of it, but it felt long. Should be smoother from here on out.

Man that fight choreography sucks. Stevens was brilliant tho.

This show is already vastly overrated. Incredibly slow and dull. The only way you could even tell it was connected with the X-Men was because they mentioned Mutants. If anything, it felt like a more "realistic" American Horror Story. I was not watching a comic book show, I was watching an MA version of Stranger Things. And everything they told in the first 45 minutes could and should have been told in 10 minutes. The length was padded WAY out. Hell, it makes Jessica Jones good. I had to turn it off at the 1 hour mark, and I'm one who is all for giving shows the benefit of the doubt before giving up on them.

The acting wasn't THAT good either, which is a shame as FX is known for strong acting. At least the jukebox soundtrack was excellent, offering up deep cuts that I hadn't heard in a LONG time.

@GAThrawnIGF - It was the first damn episode which needs exposition to build a foundation upon its further episodes. Also the directing was used in concert to the character of David Haller. But please criticize the first episode and make your judgement on that. Such great insight.

I'm not going to lie, I had a bit of trouble following everything. Could've been the Percocet. But I enjoyed it. Things kinda came together for me near the end. It's a shame this isn't related to the main XCU (that's a thing...right?) as it might shed some light as to where all the mutants went in "Logan"

@mtwiggs - I think they don't want to tie it directly to the Fox-universe in the first season, just in case it failed.

It would bring yet another contunity issue of "why dont they get Legion to help" if they tie it directly to the films (say have Patric stewart.Macavoy cameo) and the show was cancelled.

I think if the entire season is recieved well (which is likely to happen) then next season will have a strong tie to the x-men universe.

@mtwiggs - Syd's power is like Rogue's only she switches bodies with people when they touch. David kissing her made them switch and being in David's mind made her crazy and she accidentally used his power to erase the doors or something and couldn't figure out how to reverse it. Eventually their bodies somehow reverted back and that's how David was out.

Presumably the team from the end broke Syd out and got the other people out too since they only noted that Lenny died.

I think the season premiere made my head explode. The good kind. Both kinds of heads.

And on top of that, the show was completely humorless and lacked anything to put a smile on your face. A major complaint about BvS was its lack of humor and a dark, edgy tone, but that movie had a few light hearted moments...and then you love shows like this and whatever's on Netflix which are just as dark if not more so. Double standard much?
