LEGION Showrunner Says The Show Must "Earn" A Crossover With The X-Men Film Universe

There have been conflicting reports on whether Legion will crossover with Fox's X-Men film universe and in a recent interview, showrunner Noah Hawley provides some clarification. Check it out.

Will Legion connect to the X-Men films? That's been the question from nearly day one, and we've received conflicting reports almost from the beginning. Bryan Singer said the show would connect while X-Men movie producer Lauren Shuler Donner more recently stated that the TV show would take place in its "own, separate world."  In a new interview with Variety, series executive producer Noah Hawley provided further context, indicating that they're actually both right.

It seems Legion may be another Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., in the sense that the show takes place within its parent cinematic universe - there just aren't any overt connections. "I think it’s important for us to establish this as a fully realized world with fully realized characters. It does connect and it can connect, but I’m not relying on that. I have to prove myself. I have to prove that the show is good enough to incorporate those elements from the movie world, if that were ever possible."

Hawley also stated that the salary requirements for some of the actors to appear on the show is a major hurdle. "It’s sort of a non-starter to say James McAvoy’s going to be in my show. I’m not saying never, but certainly not in the first year of it. You’d have to pay those guys so much money to begin with. You’d have to pay them movie money in a different medium."

It's likely that if the show proves as popular as some of FX's other primetime dramas (American Horror Story, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, etc.) we'll probably see a cameo or two from the film universe, just don't expect Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence or James McAvoy to appear. But perhaps they'll be able to snag Patrick Stewart for a quick cameo?

Legion premieres February 8.

@hufflepuff69 - First they said it was, then they said it was a parallel universe, then they said it was the MCU, then they said it was, then they said it wasn't and now they say it is again. Continuity doesn't exist in these movies and it's only bothersome if you make it to be. I'm just hoping Legion's a dope miniseries, like the Spartacus prequel show.

@Yaf - I thinking what they are saying is that Legion could stand both as its own and part of the X-men filmverse.

If the first season is successful (as in many people watch it and enjoy it). Then they will say its part of the X-men filmverse. This will allow them to later introduce characters from the films into the show (they great thing about the younger x-men cast is that none of the actors are too "big" not to do TV work).

If the show isnt successful then they can say it is seperate from the movies, thus if it is cancelled, there wont be more contunity issues ("Why arent the mentioning Legion").

I think its a good idea not to connect at first. I enjoy Agents of Sheild but it has the logical problem of why arent the events of the show affecting the films. I mean isnt Daisy more LOGICAL a better candidate for an avenger than Hawkeye? Why didnt they call the Avengers when Hive was about to destory the planet.

@hufflepuff69 - Which Universe? Original one? Post DOFP one? or Deadpool?

@StormXmen123 - Honestly, I think what they mean in terms of this and Logan not being a part of the universe is that they're in the same universe as long as they need to be. If Logan contradicts Apocalypse, you don't need to see them as part of the same universe but it doesn't hurt to do so. This has had more jumbled statements since it was announced but I think the idea is the same. If the shoe fits, then it fits but if you get a left Jordan and a right dress shoe, you don't have to wear them both to the prom.

@Yaf - With Logan I can see it as being an altervative future (similar to the Old Man Logan comic). I only say that because for what we have been told it seems that all the X-men are dead. It seems to lessen the "happy ending " of DoFP.
If it was set way in the future (as in 100 years) then I wouldnt mind it being set in the same "happy DoFP timeline" but the fact that it only 5 years after and Xavier is alive, I dont think it was old age that killed the X-men.

@StormXmen123 - I mean, the idea is that Xavier had a mental tremor that killed the X-Men, right? Even if they want to keep that canon, all they need to do is say that the Shi'ar oi Proteus or Mr. Sinister or some deus ex machine manipulated Xavier into the brain tremor and used that moment to whisk the mutants away.

@Yaf - I personally believe that the X-men are alive (either kidnapped or simply logan+xavier are hiding from them to protect them from Xaviers seizures).
If this is the last Hugh and Stewart film, I dont belive that the orginal cast (Halle, Famke etc) arent going to make an apperance.

Something like Logan dying and them all showing up to say goodbye, and he gives the X-23 to train + protect like they did for him.

@StormXmen123 - Honestly, there're some rumor spoilers on SuperHeroHype which if true, could either go so good or so bad. However, I always thought it would be a great ending if Logan's gone/dead, Xavier's gone/dead and X23 knocks on the mansion door only for Scott and Jean to open it.

This show could end up being better than the X-Men film universe.

I'm not sure the AOS comparison works, in shield movie characters and events impact the show, while sound thiss like the films will have no impact at all.

@StarlordsDad - If it's a Captain America movie, it affects it big time. Otherwise, not really.

I hope this is good just because I need to get excited for Fox-men other than Logan and DP2. The last movie or anything from them I enjoyed a lot was First Class. Also feel like Dan Stevens should be a more prominent hero in either MCU, DCEU, or in probably the Fox movie universe as well.

Very intrigued from what we've gotten so far, and the showrunner gives me a lot of hope.

If 'AOS' could snag Samuel L. Jackson for a episode...'Legion' should be able to snag James McAvoy for a scene or two.

@IronGenesis - Samuel L Jackson would go to a 4 year olds birthday party if money was involved. I'm pretty sure he has the longest filmography of any actor today, so that's not a real comparison lol
