LOKI Season 2 "Honest Trailer" Pokes Fun At The Multiverse Saga, Product Placement, And Victor Timely

An "Honest Trailer" for Loki season 2 has been released by Screen Junkies, and it takes aim at Marvel Studios' recent woes, the hit-and-miss nature of the Multiverse Saga, and McDonald's role in the show.

Loki season 2 proved to be a much-needed win for Marvel Studios in a year that's seen them release three noteworthy disappointments in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Secret Invasion and The Marvels

Alongside Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it's arguably their only real win in 2023, though we remain optimistic that What If...? season 2 will end the year on a high.

In the meantime, the Screen Junkies team has just dropped a new "Honest Trailer" for Loki's latest batch of episodes. They don't exactly eviscerate what was a very well-received TV show, but take this opportunity to tear into the MCU's small screen struggles and the wider issues which have plagued the Multiverse Saga.

The role McDonald's played in the series comes under scrutiny as does Jonathan Majors' somewhat bizarre approach to the stuttering Victor Timely and his increasingly dramatic line delivery. To some extent, it feels like they're struggling to find anything majorly negative to say, but there are plenty of fun observations here even the most ardent MCU supporter can smile at.

Recently, Tom Hiddleston reflected on how his previous performances as Loki informed what we saw from the God of Mischief turned "God Loki" in season 2:

"I mean, we were drawing on so much of the last 14 years of my life as Loki and all those movies and all the work of those directors and those writers. Actually, it's important to say that. The screenwriter of those films, from Don Payne who wrote the first Thor movie, all the way up to Michael Waldron, who wrote season one and Eric Martin who wrote season two."

Check out Loki season 2's "Honest Trailer" in the player below.

Loki season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

The series stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Neil Ellice, with Jonathan Majors, Ke Huy Quan and Owen Wilson.

Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Dan Deleeuw and Kasra Farahani direct episodes. The Head Writer is Eric Martin.

All episodes of Loki season 2 are now streaming on Disney+.

@MyCoolYoung - Always been a case of if wanting to go down a road of connectability like a fast food joint just go all the way and BE a fast food joint we all know and get a bit of cross advertising money to help profit margins cos I get way more bothered when they go overboard and make it look generic but familiar AVOIDING product placement than when they just use the actual thing.

Is fun when the product they place is one that isn't even around anymore and probably forgotten about like that Zoom or whateverr it was called in GotG which unsure I ever noticed existed with ipod dominating the market fairly early on in that regard.

@MyCoolYoung - honestly, it makes the world more realistic if anything, it blends in to the environment to me cuz i dont actively look for it

@Apophis71 - which is so crazy because I loved zunes and hated ipods. Zune had more memory, cheaper, mo4e reliable, and better quality in my opinion

MyCoolYoung - 12/6/2023, 1:59 PM
@Matchesz - quite honestly, I didn't know people had a problem with product placement until I came here. It definitely blends in and I don't go looking for it or saying "there's McDonald's I know they paid to be here" but also why is it a problem that a company have partners? It's just weird to me

Apophis71 - 12/6/2023, 2:00 PM
@Matchesz - That too, even if it supposed to be a branch timeline being more identifiable and realistic I would say makes for a bigger emotional connection and impact when it is destroyed without having to try make us care about the entirely fictional generic people, places and products. Keep the generic type stuff for when it is an alien planet or show it is a VERY different alternate universe where we thus don't recognise anything.

@MyCoolYoung - It was the same for me with the betamax my parents purchased over the VHS machines and don't get me started on all the great personal computers that were out there before that dog$#!t IBM one came along and it's even cheaper, nastier initial clones/compatibles.

We always just got the kids super cheap digital music players cos knew they would loose the darn things or they would get stolen around here when ipods were on the go, Few quid for a memory stick type affair may have been naff quality but nobody was gonna bother nicking those and the kids didn't care as long as they had something they could put their fav tracks on.

@MyCoolYoung - really... you don't understand? You're being pretty disingenuous. People don't like being advertised to. People watch movies to see art and not a commercial. If it feels natural, fine. But when the way they did it was a damn commercial.

The fact that they made Selvie long to work in a damn McDonald's is ridiculous. I'm not insulting anyone who works at a McDonald's, I respect them but if you're gonna tell me that a God with the ability to go anywhere she wanted and in anytime would choose that is insulting everyone's intelligence and the character's intelligence.

This was a glorified commercial, if they were going through a drive through or stopping at McDonald's to eat, I got no problem without as long as you ain't placing the logo in a way that feels like a commercial.

This shit was the lowest thing in the whole season.

@EgoEgor - I'm a little bit dumber for having read this selective outrage. GTA trailer just broke records... you know what a trailer is... a commercial ad. It's business get over it. Go to an art show for art
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 12/6/2023, 6:51 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Once again you see being disingenuous and dismissive. Your comparing a trailer for one's product to using product placement whose sole purpose is to exist as a commercial for something else.

And you watch Loki because it's art, because it's entertainment and not a business; for them sure for you it's art.

And a trailer is not a product placement. You know why people don't like it. You may not agree with them but don't pretend like everyone is a moron for not feeling the way you feel about product placements.

@MyCoolYoung - For what it’s worth, give me his he over Honest Trailers anytime. The latter isn’t anything more than snark in my humble opinion where is the former, you can tell if they love the characters and have fun with them.
ridah
ridah - 12/7/2023, 1:43 PM
@MyCoolYoung - I think many times it's BAD product placement, rather than generalizing. I rarely have heard people complain about Nokia phones in the Matrix, Reese's Pieces in ET or Wilson in Castaway. If done well, it can even elevate the material. But done poorly, it can feel like a used car salesman patronize you, immediately pulling you out of the movie and ruining the suspension of disbelief.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/7/2023, 4:56 PM
@ridah - putting McDonald's ruined your suspension of disbelief but a god of mischief pulling trees didnt?
ridah
ridah - 12/8/2023, 1:19 PM
@MyCoolYoung - McDonald's didn't bother me personally, I thought it worked, I was commenting as to why it may bother some. But I'd argue that the "pulling trees" worked because it fit in the context of the universe. Just like Luke using a telekinesis to move a lightsaber works in suspension of belief, but if he pulled up to a McDonald's it'd be ruined. It depends on the context and universe building.

@marvel72 - it doesn't feel real. It felt like a cartoon character. He's trying to show his range but he's got to ground that performance in reality and he didn't.

oooof, big swing and a miss with this one, it felt more like a "MCU dying am I right fellow kids" piece than, you know, an honest trailer for the actual show.
Drace24
Drace24 - 12/6/2023, 2:24 PM
@Spidey91 - Yeah, that's basically what Honest Trailers is now. Just a rundown of the most popular criticisms that the audience already has. And the obligatory "look how many times they say a specific line in the movie, haha" montage. The irony of them costantly critisizing lack of original ideas in Hollywood, despite still milking a decade old formula.
