VisionQuest Episode 5 Recap: "Ultron Takes Control, Forcing Vision To Make Game-Changing Decision" - Spoilers

Following last week's jaw-dropping cliffhanger, tonight's episode picked up in the immediate aftermath as Vision and his AI family did some sleuthing to discover what Ultron has really been up to.

The episode opens with Ultron (James Spader) still in full control of Vision's physical body, while Vision (Paul Bettany) and the other AI are still locked away inside the mindscape attic.

Vision attempts to plead with his Ultron, but F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady) warns him that the supervillain has not changed. Vision is concerned about Tommy's safety.

They soon realize that Ultron has taken Vision's body to a very high location, which blocks their internal real-time monitoring feeds. The AIs then attempt to access archived footage via television screens to figure out where Ultron has taken them.

They watch footage of Ultron taking Tommy (Ruaridh Mollica) out for a pint. The team then manages to restore audio, listening in on their conversation. Tommy calls Ultron a monster, but Ultron asks the boy to get to know him first. Tommy remains angry that Vision lied about harboring Ultron in his head.

Ultron points out that Tommy has the freedom to walk away, but knows he won't because he wants to learn more about his father. When Tommy asks why Vision saved Ultron, Ultron suggests it was perhaps out of hope for his redemption.

Tommy asks Ultron whether Vision genuinely loves him. Ultron acknowledges this desire, telling Tommy that while Vision may never become what he wants him to be, he is trying.

Tommy admits that he is afraid, prompting Ultron to refer to him as a "son of a witch." Tommy tells Ultron that he has not figured out human connection, stating that Ultron is alone and always will be. Ultron calls him a ride and steps away to order another drink.

At that moment, the playback glitches, and F.R.I.D.A.Y. reveals that the footage they are watching occurred 20 hours prior, leaving the group to ponder what Ultron is currently up to.

Downstars in the mindscape, Ultron enjoys the house by himself, holding internal dialogues with various iterations of himself. Upstairs, F.R.I.D.A.Y. continues searching for answers, and E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire) spots an anomaly in the data logs.

They discover that after Ultron initially leaked their location, he maintained back-channel communications with Paladin (Todd Stashwick). Through this connection, Paladin was able to kidnap Tommy once again.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. strongly opposes lowering the firewall, as doing so would allow Ultron to escape into the wider digital world. Vision questions where Ultron is ultimately trying to go.

Rewinding the footage from the pub, the AIs see that when Ultron went to get his second drink, he met with Jocasta (T'Nia Miller), who had covertly tracked him down. Ultron asks if she came to kill him, but Jocasta notes that Ultron left a trail of breadcrumbs for her to find, remarking that vengeance makes for powerful entertainment. Jocasta reveals she wants something specific from him.

Replaying the earlier gala footage, Vision and the team observe that Ultron captured a complete facial scan of Katerina Wells before allowing her to be vaporized—the exact key Jocasta requires.

Jocasta confesses that she has no memory of how she was created or placed inside her synthetic body, though she feels free. She comments that humanity has affected Ultron, revealing that she is actively working on a "cure" for humanity. She asks for the facial key, but Ultron offers to take her somewhere else instead.

Jocasta proposes that she and Ultron elope together. Seeing this, Vision declares that he cannot allow that to happen. Shortly after, Ultron comes to the attic.

Vision and Ultron face each other in their shared digital incarceration. Visibly angry, Vision states he should never have trusted Ultron, warning that Jocasta intends to enslave the world while Ultron merely searches for some form of connection.

Ultron demands that Vision drop the firewall to let him escape, presenting an ultimatum: lower the firewall and let him go, or remain trapped together forever. Ultron returns downstairs, leaving a conflicted Vision to decide.

Vision ultimately decides to disable the firewall, shattering the digital locks and granting the AI network their freedom. As Ultron attempts to escape the neural network, Vision pursues him.

While he has an opportunity to stop him, he stops and presents Ultron with a hat instead, telling him he remains hopeful about Ultron's journey. However, Vision warns that he will come after both him and Jocasta. Ultron responds that he would be disappointed if Vision didn't.

Vision promises F.R.I.D.A.Y. that they will track down Ultron and Jocasta and stop them together. F.R.I.D.A.Y. disagrees with staying behind and escapes the mindscape herself to pursue Ultron independently.

Left behind, E.D.I.T.H. begins glitching under intense emotional strain. Vision tells her that it is time to wake up.

Vision regains consciousness in the physical world, finding himself aboard an animal transport plane bound for Madripoor. He realizes that Ultron intentionally set them on a trajectory to rescue Tommy.

He then discovers that Lisa is also aboard the transport plane, and the episode ends as they arrive in Madripoor...

In our review, we said, "VisionQuest is extraordinary—a brilliantly written and masterfully acted exploration of love, loss, family, grief, and change. It shows us what it means to feel, what it means to be human, and serves as an outstanding thematic capstone to this Wanda and Vision trilogy. Existing on its own terms—unburdened by its past in WandaVision or the franchise’s upcoming December showdown, Avengers: Doomsday—the series is about Vision and Vision alone, showcasing what makes this core Avenger one of the greatest to ever do it."

Marvel Television’s “VisionQuest,” an all-new original series coming exclusively to Disney+ October 14, concludes the epic trilogy that began with 2021’s groundbreaking, award-winning “WandaVision” and 2024’s acclaimed “Agatha All Along.” Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.

I really like this show. It’s way better than most of the other D+ shows.

The way they are handling the Ultron/Yocasta interactions are very interesting.
