WHAT IF...? - Here Are All The Returning MCU Actors In Today's Killmonger Episode (And Who Was Recast)

Today's episode of What If...? asked the question "What If...Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?", but how many actors from the Marvel Studios movies reprised their roles in the animated series? Find out here.

Today's episode of What If...? proved to be something of a mixed bag, with the weird Iron Man/Black Panther mashup struggling to hit the mark in a variety of ways. Coincidentally, the cast was similarly hit and miss, with a combination of returning MCU veterans and new additions to this shared world.

Michael B. Jordan stole the show as Erik Killmonger, while he was joined by Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Angela Bassett (Queen Ramonda), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Andy Serkis (Ulysses Klaue), Don Cheadle (Rhodey), Paul Bettany (Jarvis), Leslie Bibb (Christine Everhart), and John Kani (T'Chaka).

As for the replacements for actors Marvel Studios was unable to bring back for What If...?, we had Mick Wingert reprising his role as Tony Stark, with Kiff Vandenheuval playing Obidiah Stane, Beth Hoyt filling in as Pepper Potts, Mike McGill back as General Ross, and Ozioma Akagha as a young Shuri.

It also sounded like John Oliver had an uncredited voice cameo as a British journalist.

It's still a little difficult to embrace these characters with soundalike voice actors, especially when some are better than others. However, a lot of MCU talent was enlisted, and we're certainly not going to complain about getting to hear more of Boseman's work as T'Challa, even in a fairly minor role.

What did you guys think of this week's What If...? voice cast?

An overly convoluted Black Panther by way of Iron Man. Not a good episode this week, unfortunately.

@JoshWilding - My thoughts were the exact opposite - I thoroughly enjoyed the mash-up. Convoluted, yes, but it could almost be boiled down to, "What if Killmonger was impatient and put his plan into motion ten years early?"

@TheAstoundingMan - That is a better way of looking at it, to be fair! This one just never clicked into place for me (I'm getting a little sick of the cliffhangers too, but here's hoping that's building to something big...).

@JoshWilding - This was the weakest episode for me. It’s the first time throughout the series where I found myself bored whilst watching. I didn’t really see the point in this one.

@TheAstoundingMan - so the plan he just whipped up real quick ended up more complicated and more successfully than the one he worked on for 10 years longer? And that's good writing to you?

TheAstoundingMan - 9/15/2021, 4:01 AM
@Origame - I'm not going to die on any hill defending the writing, but I was willing to accept that Killmonger saw an opening and took it.

It seemed like he was mostly improvising - events just happened to pan out in his favour (at least where things ended).

@TheAstoundingMan - I don't think there's much of a plan (other than commandere Stark & US agression/have a plan against BP) & for Killmongers' ruthlessness, it works.

I thought the episode very good.

This and last week's episodes needed to be longer. Or maybe they're saving it for season 2? Either way, it felt like they were starting to get good and then just ended.

@Himura - id say this should've either focused on Tony and what he'd do if not a hero, or focus on killmonger after he became black panther.

@Himura - The episode has a sequel.

@Repian - Yup. I think people are getting too caught up in the idea that each episode is one then done, and judging the story based on one piece of the puzzle.

@Repian -

Yep, this was the part of the episode I was waiting for and seeing your post here made things make a ton more sense

@TanukiTrooper - Seems clear to me they are bringing back the major heroes and villains from these episodes in the finale for an interdimensional dark avengers style storyline
Himura
Himura - 9/15/2021, 1:15 PM
@TanukiTrooper - I mean, its not too hard to put in a "To be continued" at the end of the episodes that have a follow up to them, especially considering these have been mostly advertised as episodic.

@Repian - oh joy, i get to watch another bad episode....

Maybe they should consider doing full hour episodes or two parters.

For at least half the episodes so far, just feels like they are cramming in too much, since they want to get the full scope of some movie’s events in there

Worst one is captain carter because thats literally all they did retell the first captain america but crammed into a half hour episode.

Personally think it’s climax should have been them saving the howling commandos and bucky from the hydra base, add more scenes in between, then maybe end on some version of the first avenger’s action montage, maybe expanded to include later moments of the film

I want a zombie Luis episode!
dracula
dracula - 9/15/2021, 2:35 AM
id rank them
1.What If...T'Challa Became A Star Lord?
2.What If...The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?
3.What If...Zombies?!
4.What If...Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead Of His Hands?
5.What If...Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?
6.What If...Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?

Put T'Challa at number 1 because they werent restricted by a movie's events, they went back far enough and had enough changes where they could just tell a story that fits the run time. Also id say the humor didnt feel out of place here.

Really id say the fury murder mystery managed their time the best in terms of the bigger plots. They actually did manage to put a movie's worth of plot in. (Well half a movie more like, hopefully they do a part 2)

Doctor Strange really needed more time.

Thought for the day… when the Marvel Disney plus shows started I was out of bed early each morning to catch the new episode as it landed, now I might not watch it for three or four days.

@Spike101 - same here. Used to wake up early for wandavision. Fell off with falcon and the winter soldier but would watch it each night. Loki finale I woke up early for though, it’s probably my favorite series so far next to WV.

What If is just off for me. Not a fan of the animation (did you see that awful dancing animation in the background of Tony’s party??) and each episode is paced way too quickly. My favorite episode is the zombies one but probably bc I love tribe original story

Meh episode in my opinion. Basically just a "What if Killmonger became Black Panther... again... but differently". I would have been more interested in seeing what the world would have been if Killmonger won in Black Panther.
