Lots of intriguing details about What If? have been finding their way online recently, and the latest shed some light on plans for Erik Killmonger. The Black Panther villain - played by Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler's movie - has appeared in promo art for the Disney+ series, but looks exactly the same as he did in 2018.
This has led to plenty of speculation about what he'll be getting up to in Marvel Studios' first animated series, and The Illuminerdi has now shed at least a little more light on plans for the character.
The site notes that "rather than going after the throne of Wakanda, Stevens will go international thanks to a new friendship with Tony Stark." While some leaked LEGO has indicated that a version of Iron Man will head to Sakaar instead of The Hulk, the first trailer for What If? showed Stark enjoying that donut we saw him eating in Iron Man 2, so could this be when they cross paths?
Remember, both graduated from MIT in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it's possible they'll become allies in the present day. Could that lead to a dark turn for the Armoured Avenger?
A synopsis for the show was shared during last year's Disney Investor Day, revealing: "'What If…?' flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways."
"Coming to Disney+ in summer 2021, Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU," it continues, "featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews; Ashley Bradley is head writer."
What If? premieres on Disney+ this August.
