WHAT IF...? Is Just The First Of "Multiple" Animated Series Currently In Development At Marvel

The first episode of What If...? hit Disney+ today, and Marvel Studios EP Brad Winderbaum has now confirmed that there are "multiple" MCU-set animated series "in various stages of development."

We've been hearings whispers that Marvel Studios is currently working on more animated series in addition to What If...?, and we now have confirmation that more animated MCU adventures are indeed on the way.

Executive Producer Brad Winderbaum tells Variety that there are "multiple" shows “in various phases of development” for Disney Plus streaming service, in addition to a second season of What If...? and a series of “photo-real” animated shorts centered on Baby Groot. There are no current plans for animated features, however.

Winderbaum didn't specify what any of these planned shows will focus on, but he did suggest that they won't simply be tie-ins or spinoff from established big-screen releases.

“We realized that there’s a lot of cool avenues you can explore with animation,” he said. “Any project that we create is going to be something that needs to be animated in order for the story to be told. There’s very little desire to take a piece of IP that’s popular because we’re coming out with a movie and just make an animated show about it. We’re not going to do that.”

Winterbaum estimates that about 85% of MCU actors returned to voice their respective characters in What If...?, but claims everyone was asked. GOTG star Dave Bautista would disagree (see his recent Tweet below).

“I saw that, too,” Winderbaum says. “It’s my understanding that everybody was asked in some way, shape or form, either through their agents or directly. I don’t know really what happened behind the scenes there, but certainly, we would have loved for him to be in the show. So there’s probably some miscommunication somewhere.”

Damn, what's the over/under Drax gets offed in GotG 3? Dave seems to feel quite underappreciated. Could chalk it up to celeb ego, but I doubt it. I do feel he got better and better as Drax in each succeeding film.
He had my favorite performance in Blade Runner 2: Electric Androids Dream of Boogaloos.

@PapaSpank54 - his antagonism over the Gunn situation is probably a big reason.

@Origame - facts. That was pretty crazy... I totally understand Disney not wanting to associate with someone who said the kinda stuff Gunn was tweeting back then, and honesty the whole thing caused me to look at him in a bit of a different light, myself.
Kinda nuts that it blew up so big and but worked out so well for Gunn.

@PapaSpank54 - I’d agree if Bautista wasn’t in An advertisement for Disney+

@PapaSpank54 - yeah. Personally I'd understand the choice of firing him if it wasn't for the fact this was years before they hired him and that he long since apologized. If it's something they were actually worried about they should've done the research before hiring him in the first place. Not to mention the hypocrisy of firing him over this, while still promoting the franchise he worked on which has a central message of anyone potentially being redeemable. But glad it all worked out.

@Origame - You know, everyone makes mistakes. I've made my share. During my college days I visited a jail cell more than once. But now I have a PhD in Comp. Sci, a nice wife (also with a PhD in Comp. Sci.), nice kids, a nice house, nice cars, and nice stuff. So all that bad ju-ju is behind me (hopefully) and it seems the same is true with Gunn. Like the Steve Miller song goes "you got to go through hell before you get to heaven".

I mean compared to DC Marvel has been pretty lacking on the animation front. Nice to see them stepping things up.

@ModHaterSLADE - Agree, a lot of the tv shows are too kid centric and overly hyperactive. hopefully they do some that are closer to the x men animated series and spiderman animated series from the 90s where the violence was g-rated but the stories were a bit more mature or closer to the source material.

The animation was amazing. I'd love for Disney to start doing full length movies like this again.

@Himura - ya I think the animation is awesome, I was reading the bad review ign gave it and lots of people were whining about the bad animation which really confused me. It’s seems really modern and smooth.

@CaptainMexico - I can see how some people would have a problem with the art-style, it took me a while to get used to. But the animation was absolutely top notch, great action choreography and some truly impressive set pieces

Hopefully this will make DC step up their game in animation
The last couple of Marvel animated shows were embarassing though, so its not really that hard to improve

After only one episode, Marvel has stepped their game up in the animation department. Sure, there was Spider-verse but that was done by Sony not Marvel themselves. While I liked some of the Marvel animated series in the past, I always thought DC utilized animation better.

This episode was a strong start. Captain Carter was awesome and having Steve be a prototypical Iron Man powered by the Tesseract was pretty cool. The action was fast-paced and fun. The voice acting was solid. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the show and whatever other MCU animated projects are in the pipeline.

Is it too much to ask for a bloody Wolverine anime? Because I'd love that.

@Fares - There is a Wolverine anime....
Fares
Fares - 8/12/2021, 3:09 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Yeah but I want another one. The 2011 Marvel Anime one didn't really grab my attention. Pretty boy Logan definitely didn't do it any favors. The one featured in the X-Men anime however was closer to what I have in mind. I'm looking for something more along the lines of Afro Samurai and the recent Yasuke. A loner who finds himself in trouble he never asked for.
