What If...? has never really featured any "mind-blowing" cameos, with Spider-Man's well-publicised season 1 role in "What If... Zombies?!" arguably the biggest.
Recently, we told you of rumoured plans for X-Men member Storm to appear in the show's upcoming third season. Unfortunately, little has been revealed beyond that; for example, will this Storm Variant from X-Men '97 or is a completely different Ororo Munroe set to take centre stage? Time will tell.
Now, scooper @CanWeGetToast (via Toonado.com) is claiming we'll see a worthy Storm wield Mjolnir in the Marvel Animation series. That one heck of a character beat for the fan-favourite mutant and one we're honestly a little surprised hasn't been saved for live-action.
Talking to ComicBook.com earlier this week Marvel Studios' head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum, said What If...? season 3 will finally see some pre-existing Marvel characters appear in animation before live-action (explaining Blade's planned role in the Marvel Zombies spin-off).
"Actually, in the third season, spoiler alert, we do start to push at that boundary a little bit more," he teased. "There's more fun to be had with the Multiverse and who can kind of come in."
As for what that extra bit of freedom means for X-Men '97, he'd later add, "Well, actually, it was kind of liberating to be able to stay in the 90s. It allowed us to go places that we could just do what we want. To be so iterative. Things that we couldn't do if we were more MCU adjacent like What If…? is."
"I mean, What If…? Is like we're literally remixing the MCU. So, it's harder to introduce characters. Because you want to see them in live-action. Although, we do see Bill Foster as Giant Man in the second season. That's new!"
"They were pretty much off the table," What If...? director Bryan Andrews previously said of the X-Men not being in season 2. "They're like, 'We got to do it first in live action and then you get to do it.' And we're like, 'Ah, man!' We would've loved to have played with all kinds of toys. But there's limitations."
Something must have changed since then and we honestly wouldn't be surprised if this Storm cameo ties into Marvel Studios' wider Multiverse plans. Then again, it could be a standalone story which explores a scenario we won't necessarily get to see in live-action, such as Ororo's first meeting with Black Panther.
Are you excited to see Storm wield Mjolnir? This is just a rumour for now, but let us know your thoughts on it in the comments section below.
