WHAT IF? Star Seth Green Talks Howard The Duck Return, Teases His Role In The Series And His MCU Future

Howard the Duck made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, and later made cameo appearances in that movie's sequel and Avengers: Endgame

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Seth Green - who lends his voice to the character - reflected on being cast to play the fan-favourite duck. "I got a call from James Gunn, who I worked with on Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. He said, 'I’ve already shot the colored animation for the Howard cameo but the lip assignment is pretty loose. Do you want to come in and loop these two lines for this tag on Guardians of the Galaxy?' And I said, 'Yeah.'"

"He made the second Guardians and was like, 'I threw Howard into this seedy place,' told me the line was, 'You’re out of luck, until you’ve gone duck,' and I said, 'OK, let’s try that.'"

Green will reprise the role of Howard the Duck in What If?, and while he couldn't reveal much, the actor did mention that "[it's] really cool because it resulted in a scene between T’Challa and Howard." The animated series will mark the late Chadwick Boseman's final MCU appearance, and it seems clear that getting to see the two characters interact on screen means a lot of Green.

As for Howard's future in this shared world, he couldn't say much, but did share the following.

"I like the character in the comics, and I like subversive stuff. He’s a punk rock noir detective, at least that’s the way I play it," Green explained. "I think we can all rest assured that Marvel has good plans for all their characters that are going to make sense."

It sounds like we'll just have to wait and see what happens, but assuming Howard didn't decide to stick around on Earth, it seems likely the feathered P.I. will make his return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Didn't know Howard the Duck was gonna show up in What If. Was kinda hoping for Cosmo though, but this can be fun too

@bkmeijer - I take it you didn't watch the recently released trailer?

@bkmeijer -

Was kinda hoping for Cosmo though...

What makes you think he wouldn't show up? 🤔

We really don't know much about all of the characters in the new series so I wouldn't rule out anyone. I bet there will be quite a few surprises yet to be revealed.

@ElricReturns - I did, but I didn't really pay attention. Same goes with the poster. Apparently there is an Ultron with five stones on there. Didn't pay attention at all there either

@Humperdink - yeah that's true. Either in Guardians 3 or in What If, I do want to see Cosmo show up

@bkmeijer - the trailer was cool, but Howard was personally the stand out for me. But I also grew up watching the movie as a kid. My dad taped it on VHS from TV, and "edited" out the commercials. I was shocked as hell when I watched it on streaming as an adult and saw duck boobies....

@ElricReturns - I have never actually seen the movie, but from what I know I think your dad made a good choice editing out the commercial parts

Howard The Duck is perfect for the second season of Loki. He may be a detective working for TVA. So they applaud the best detective in the agency.

it would be really fun to see Mobius and Howard the Duck working together.

So, if the multiverse was reignited (or if the MCU reconnected to the multiverse or whatever happened), then did Duckworld exist?

Did Howard come to the MCU from Duckworld before the Multiversal War?

Like maybe in the year 1986...?
Is the Howard The Duck movie canon?!?!?!?!?

I read that the Russo’s had recast Howard with Ken Jeong for a scene in either Infinity War or Endgame but it got cut. Kinda would’ve preferred Jeong over Green.

@RafaelTorres - Ken Jeong was in Endgame. He was monitoring the CCTV when Scott was freed from the Quantum realm.

I love Seth Green but part of me at some point wants to see Paul Giamatti voicing Howard, he's got the voice, the sarcastic sense of humor, and the short temper. It would make up for The Rhino in ASM2.

Otherwise I would honestly kill to see a new Howard movie in the MCU, it literally needs to a self-parody of the franchise. It starts with Howard on some planet flirting with an alien girl like in Vol. 2, before he's accidentally sucked into one of Doctor Strange's portals and into the final fight scene in Endgame. Freaked out and confused, we basically watch him trying to avoid all of the more violent characters and scenes before Tony snaps away Thanos and his army. Howard's about to go back into his portal that Strange opens for the extra armies he summoned before he starts looking for his missing cigar and misses his portal and by the time he finds out the portals are closed and he's alone on the battlefield.

From there he meets and teams up with Beverly (Zoey Deutch) and her best friend/wannabe boyfriend Lester Verde (soon-to-be Doctor Bong) when they're abducted by a villain named Pro-Rata, who in this movie is a parody of Thanos who wants to find the Cosmic Keys (instead of the Infinity Stones) in order to control the universe and would be played by Tim Robbins, who played Phil in the original movie. Howard, Lester and Beverly escape him and have to find these Cosmic Keys before Pro-Rata does; Pro-Rata sends his minions based on the Black Order after them. So basically the entire movie would be a giant spoof of the Infinity Saga, with Howard and co. trying to find the Keys and meeting other MCU characters and commenting on them, their universe, and at superhero movie tropes and people who hate superhero movies in general. Or a similar storyline to that effect.

Always thought Bob Odenkirk would make a great Howard the Duck, especially the Steve Gerber iteration
