LOKI Star Tom Hiddleston Teases His WHAT IF? Episode And The Show's Impact On The Wider MCU

Loki star Tom Hiddleston has revealed the premise of an episode of What If? featuring the God of Mischief, while strongly indicating that the animated series will have wider ramifications for the MCU.

We've had suspicions for a while now that What If? will have larger consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe than we first realized, especially after that poster describing the characters as the "Guardians of the Multiverse." It's possible Marvel Studios has live-action plans for the team, especially if it turns out that they're all from the same Earth.

Either way, Marvel Studios has kicked open the door to the Multiverse following today's Loki finale, and during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hiddleston opened up on his role in the highly anticipated animated series.

"It's like, 'What if Loki wasn't adopted?' 'What if Peggy Carter was the one who got the [Super-Soldier] Serum?' 'What if the Ravagers kidnapped T'Challa instead of Peter Quill?' It's what if some major event in [MCU] history had gone the other way and what reality would we be living in now?" he revealed, seemingly confirming the premise of an episode featuring Loki.

"I am intrigued because I haven't seen the whole thing," Hiddleston said, adding: "And then it sets up a whole bunch of stuff in the MCU, which I know nothing about."

So, yeah, this won't just be a throwaway animated series that doesn't connect to the MCU! That promises to make What If? essential viewing, and as it looks set to be our first trip into the Multiverse following the events of "For All Time. Always.", we could be about to get a better idea of what's to come in Phase 4 and beyond.

Obligatory comment about how disappointed I am that these aren’t standalone episodes, even more disappointed now that this isn’t a standalone series. Would’ve been a good opportunity to just do some whatever we want work with the MCU

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I'm confused. How is this not that?

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I mean to say, I'm not seeing how they are being limited in any way by basing this in the MCU yet. They seem to be telling the stories they want to without limitations.

@ElricReturns - I'm honestly on the fence.
On one hand, I like that an animation series is being taken seriously and effecting the bigger universe.
On the other hand, just give me some bat shit crazy stories without worrying about the consequences.

@ElricReturns - im not saying it’s limited per se I just mean there’s not a chance to do something like a Deadpool kills the marvel universe type of story or an old man Logan -esque thing that’s self contained since all these multiverse stories are intertwined in the show to come together as a multiverse avengers team . Like zombies would’ve been cool on its own as just a damn this is a story about a MCu with a zombie outbreak except now it’s gonna be tied into the other episodes. Basically I would’ve preferred an anthology series instead of what we’re getting which im sure I’ll enjoy but it’d be nice to take a break from everything being connected

@Fares - i gotta imagine What If factors into the larger MCU... these stories could literally be variants to the TVA that occur in other universes and we could see ANY of them pop up in a future main MCU movie instead of animation. And i gotta also believe What If will be a year after year recurring thing at Disney+ as it is a testing ground for stories that fans may latch onto and say "I wanna see this in the main MCU timeline".

So does he mean that he stays with the Frost Giants (why is he white then?) or that he's the biological son of Odin? Either way sounds interesting.

Anyway, I wonder how connected each episode is, because that would impact my hype for this. Some premises sound more interesting than others, so I don't want one to be dragged down by another (is that even possible with Marvel?)

What if looking more and more like it’s connected to the mcu and not just a throw away project. I got a feeling some of these variant characters might debut in live action

@PantherKing - Totally agree…After that last episode of Loki it really opens things up to develop in off kilter ways…This is going to play a role in the larger MCU for sure…

LOVED the last episode

My hype is back to Endgame level probably even more

btw

John Campea has gone from

"Are we over the MCU after the MCU"

to

"Is there going to be backlash with the MCU Multiverse?"

@WakandaTech - I know a lot of people were saying there’s no hype after endgame but they lack insight because for me phase 4 is a period of rebuilding. A chance for us to get to know new characters. Sure the OGs are gone but these new characters could probably have the same effect on us as the OGs. So that being said new things for me are unknown and exciting

@WakandaTech - I scratched Campea off my 'has a valued opinion' list a long time ago just like Grace.

I always find it endearing how invested Tom is in the MCU. Like beyond just promoting whatever project he has out. You can tell he's a huge, legitimate fan of the whole thing.

@dmac3232 - think I read Owen Wilson's whole preparation just consisted of Tom laying the whole MCU out to him.

@dmac3232 - I know people say that it's because of the money, but you can reallllly tell how much fun the actors have with the characters. It always translates to the screen, and Tom is the perfect example.

Stupid question, when Peggy get the serum, how will we see her body evolve. Will she get bigger muscles? Bigger boobs? What is the serum supposed to do - make you into the ideal version of yourself or just bigger?

JonC
JonC - 7/14/2021, 3:26 PM
@KingLeonidas - Well it seems to be a cleaner version of what Banner got... it enhances what you have just like Erskin said to Rogers. At a minimum it gives you strength but does not necessarily increase your size. I gotta think Red Skull was more or less like Weaving before the injection... he didn't resemble skinny Steve.

@KingLeonidas - Wait, Peggy already has big boobs. So she'll get even bigger boobs?
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 7/14/2021, 7:39 PM
@KingLeonidas - My understanding is it wasn’t the serum by itself that made Steve bigger, but the combination of the serum and the vita-rays he was blasted with from Stark’s machine. You’ll notice the only other people to grow physically after the serum are the ones that got gamma rays.

Just another interesting layer for the MCU. The multiverse possibilities for potential future seasons of this show is exciting.

I loooooove the animation style of this show so much.

Crazy to be actually excited for a Marvel animated show. Feels like forever we got a good one.

Wait so how come they have even Josh Brolin returning as Thanos, and even Natalie Portman, but not Cumberbatch as Strange ?

Cap and Tony I understand, but Benedict has been working on Doctor Strange 2 for the past 6 months , I’m sure they could have gotten him to record something ?
This is so weird cause I can’t imagine anyone else voicing him when we have almost all the original cast returning :(
