Following its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Netflix has released the first official teaser trailer for Sacrifice. The upcoming action-adventure comedy stars Chris Evans (Avengers: Doomsday) as a movie star abducted by a radical group leader, played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), who intends to sacrifice him in a volcano.
According to the official synopsis: "During a star-studded charity gala, a movie star facing an existential crisis is taken hostage by a radical warrior and her followers. As the night descends into chaos, an inward journey and outward adventure ensue, blurring the line between performance and belief, salvation and sacrifice."
Speaking with Netflix Tudum, Taylor-Joy reflected on the film's thematic depth: “It's such a meta movie to be a part of. I see a lot about individual effort versus collective effort. I see a lot about just how numb people have become, the lack of importance placed on things that actually matter rather than this easier, entertaining way of looking at things. It's this concept that you can sweep things under the rug, and I think Joan and her tribe are cold water in the face to that.”
The cast features Chris Evans ("Mike Tyler"), Anya Taylor-Joy ("Joan"), Vincent Cassel ("Ben Bracken"), Ambika Mod ("Daughter Nature"), Jonatan “Yung Lean” Leandoer ("Arthur"), Sam Richardson ("Oliver"), Jade Croot ("Louise"), Miriam Silverman ("Anna"), Charli XCX ("Mother Nature"), John Malkovich ("Gunnar"), and Salma Hayek-Pinault ("Gloria Bracken").
Romain Gavras (Athena; The World Is Yours) helmed the feature, with a screenplay he co-wrote alongside Will Arbery (Succession; Seven Sisters).
As for where the idea of the film stemmed from, Gavras shared, “The inspiration goes from Greek myths to French stories like Joan of Arc,” before jokingly adding, "And another myth that is more recent, which is Lord of the Rings. Will and I were writing, and at some point we’re like, ‘Oh, we’re making Lord of the Rings.’ It’s a journey of people wanting to throw the ring of power in a volcano, and we are making the same journey.”
Sacrifice starts streaming, exclusively on Netflix, on October 16!
