Following the surprise hit of CW's RIVERDALE as a melodramatic and subversive retelling of the classic Archie universe, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will follow that same unique approach and lean heavily into the horror ad occult aspects of the character and to this end the upcoming show has found an antagonist, Father Blackwood in the form of Richard Coyle.
Deadline describes the character as:
High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of Unseen Arts. Ruthless and ambitious, Blackwood hides a terrifying dark agenda that will put him in direct conflict with Sabrina and other members of the coven.
Richard Coyle is best known from Nic Winding Refn's film Pusher as well as on British television shows Coupling and most recently Hard Sun. Coyle isn't the only English actor to be cast as a villain in the upcoming show either, as Doctor Who's Michelel Gomez is set to play Mary Wardell, one of Sabrina's teachers who is possessed by Madam Satan.
Both Coyle and Gomez joins an ever growing cast including Kiernan Shipka as the titular Sabrina, Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings) as Aunt Zelda, Wonder Woman's own Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda and Jaz Sinclair as Rosalind, Sabrina's best friend.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is expected to debut on Netflix this year.
