We recently got a first official look at Robert Rodriguez's new Netflix superhero flick, We Can Be Heroes, via some promo stills, and these latest images confirm that the movie is indeed set in the same universe as the director's 2005 hit, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.
Taylor Dooley will return as Lavagirl, but Twilight's Taylor Lautner will not reprise the role of Sharkboy (JJ Dashnaw is is cleft-chinned replacement).
At any rate, it seems the duo has been busy in the 15 years since we last saw them! Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box) will play their super-powered daughter, seen here riding a metallic shark (we assume that has something to do with her abilities).
Pedro Pascal stars as the leader of a team of supes known as The Heroics, who's daughter Missy (YaYa Gosselin) rounds up 10 fellow super-powered youngsters to rescue the group when they're abducted. Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Sung Kang (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) will play some of the other heroes, but we have no details on their characters. Priyanka Chopra is believed to be playing the villain.
Check out the new stills below, along with the previoulsy released images.
Here we see Logan actor Boyd Holbrook as an unnamed Heroic member being captured by what appears to be a giant robot.
“A lot of families have spent a lot of time together,” Rodriguez explains to EW when asked why he chose We Can Be Heroes as his next project. “I’ve been getting calls from all kinds of studios: ‘Reboot Spy Kids.’ ‘Reboot Sharkboy.’ Of course they want to. They’re all sitting at home with their kids.”
Pedro Pascal as Marcus Moreno, who is on the verge of retirement when his team is kidnapped.
“I’ve wanted to work with Pedro since forever,” Rodriguez says. “[Marcus] can be a badass if he needs to. He takes the glasses off, and he looks legit.”
Prianka Chopra as the mysterious Ms. Gradenko. Is she playing the villain? Based on this pic, it's probably a safe enough assumption.
Missy and her crew. We don't know much about any of the other young heroes, but one of 'em is named Facemaker, and has the ability to alter his appearance. “[For] a kid, that’s an amazing power,” says Rodriguez. “What if you could become anyone else?”
We Can Be Heroes doesn't have a premiere date yet.
