AHSOKA Showrunner Dave Filoni On The Empire's Evolution, Why He Wrote Every Episode, And Possible Runtimes

Dave Filoni has confirmed that he wrote every episode of this August's Ahsoka, while also comparing their runtimes to The Mandalorian and explaining how the Empire has now switched places with the Rebels.

The first trailer for Ahsoka was released during Star Wars Celebration earlier this month, and Dave Filoni has now confirmed that he's the sole writer on the upcoming Disney+ series.

While declining to reveal the show's episode count during a conversation with Collider (via SFFGazette.com), the showrunner (who we know will also direct at least one instalment) shared some insights into the expected runtime of each chapter. "I would say it's pretty relative when you do this kind of work," Filoni started. "One thing Jon [Favreau] and I are very adamant about is that we try to, you know, cut it down and strip it down to keep it moving."

"You know, it's very much a faster, more intense rule that George [Lucas] has, so my episodes have actually started pretty long, you know because I wrote them all. So they're a little different."

"[Ahsoka's episodes are in] the same range as Mandalorian episodes. Maybe on average a little longer, but I honestly don't know where they're at right now with their most recent cut down I've done, but I'd say it's in the same range." As for what it's been like penning each instalment, he added that it's "a lot of, a lot of work so...I just know the characters well so I had to do it."

That's obviously a reference to Star Wars Rebels, a series also overseen by Filoni where many of Ahsoka's lead characters first debuted.

In a separate interview with Empire (also via SFFGazette.com), Filoni elaborated on how the roles of the New Republic and Empire have been reversed during this post-Return of the Jedi era of storytelling. "I thought something in the Expanded Universe that was very easy to understand was, in the New Republic and the Remnant Empire, that the tables have turned a little bit."

"It's actually the Empire that's acting more like the Rebels, because their resources are on the downside. But the New Republic is struggling because, while they're all trying to work together, they have different ideas about how to be effective," he continues. "I think it creates a big piece of history where you can tell all kinds of stories."

It's apparent Filoni has a great understanding of this Galaxy Far, Far Away, and there's arguably no one better to helm a movie that brings together the characters from all these Disney+ TV shows for what sounds like a massive crossover event.

Ahsoka is set to premiere on Disney+ this August.
