THE ACOLYTE Beats X-MEN '97 To Become Most-Watched Disney+ Series Premiere Of 2024

Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte, debuted on Disney+ earlier this week with a two-episode premiere, and a lot of people have tuned in for the first live-action Galaxy Far, Far Away adventure set in the High Republic Era.

Despite the usual backlash, The Acolyte was a big hit with critics (it currently sits at a most impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the positive reviews appear to have convinced more than just Star Wars aficionados to give this one a go.

According to Disney+, The Acolyte is the most-watched series premiere of 2024, logging 4.8 million views within its first day of streaming (views are defined as total stream time divided by runtime). Disney+ did not report same-day viewership for the previous Star Wars show, Ahsoka, but did announce that it had reached 14 million views within its first five days on the platform.

With these numbers, The Acolyte has surpassed the viewership for recent animated revival X-Men ’97, which brought in 4 million views globally within its first five days on the streamer.

Have you watched The Acolyte yet? If so, be sure to let us know what you made of it in the comments section.

In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

 The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Leslye Headland created the series, based on Star Wars by George Lucas, and serves as an executive producer along with Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King and Jason Micallef. Charmaine DeGraté and Kor Adana are the co-executive producers. Rayne Roberts, Damian Anderson, Eileen Shim and Rob Bredow are the producers.

Headland also directed the premiere episodes (Eps. 101 & 102). Directors Kogonada (Eps. 103 & 107), Alex Garcia Lopez (Eps. 104 & 105) and Hanelle Culpepper (Eps. 106 & 108) round out the directing duties on the series.

"I really wanted to tell a story about the Sith," showrunner Headland told EW in a recent interview. "That was kind of my dream Star Wars idea. But it felt like the time period to do that in would be something pre-Phantom Menace. That seemed to be the most interesting trajectory for the Sith: How did the Sith go from the Rule of Two and being quote-unquote 'extinct' to Palpatine coming into power without the Jedi knowing about it?"

Award-winning composer Michael Abels, known for his work on Get Out and Us, scored The Acolyte.

@Doomsday8888 - I've been saying it for a while. This site is filled with disney simps.

We still have people arguing Luke skywalker of all characters was a Mary Sue to justify rey. Like wtf?

@Origame
I mean, ppl are being crazy on BOTH sides tbh and yeah, there's the same old race-card excuse, the woke debate etc etc

However...people are absolutely being extra defensive for something that, quite frankly it even ain't THAT much.

Now imagine if the product was actually good....say, like X-Men '97, sheeesh. :3

@Origame - I'm still trying to wrap my mind around them bringing up Luke when defending Rey. I don't see what kind of mental gymnastics they go through to try and make it stick. I'm starting to believe all the people saying that never actually watched Star Wars.

When people say "The hateful, racist, incel, toxic fans don't like Disney Star Wars because of women and minorities I wonder if they know anything about the OT the PT or the expanded universe.

How do they get to rewrite history so freaking much? Or I should say ATTEMPT to rewrite history. As long as I'm around they ain't getting away with that shit.

Everyone here is crazy in their own way, heh.

@Doomsday8888 - yeah I'd get that. Be defensive for the good stuff.

Even if it's just about diversity, fallout was diverse and it was actually pretty good.

Origame - 6/7/2024, 1:19 PM
@DarthOmega - yeah. Anakin I kinda get (even though you have to forget about the whole "everyone loves them" part of being a Mary Sue and forget about all the Ls he got in the prequels), but Luke is a prime example of the exact opposite of a Mary Sue. He had to earn the respect of those around him, train hard to get to jedi level, and by the end of the trilogy was just showing the force competency rey was showing IN THE FORCE AWAKENS! This just isn't a comparison.

@Doomsday8888 - they enabling her to try so mf'n hard to be whatever she's trying to portray. It'd be more compelling if she was moving like in a straight forward, no nonsense kind of way than... yeah. Whatever tf she's trying to do is not working. At mf'n all.

@clintthahamster -

4.8 Million out of 153.6 Million subscribers isn't a lot really, don't forget also that it's probably both episodes numbers combined and we've got episode 3 to air yet and I believe that's when viewers will drop off.

@marvel72 - No one said it was "a lot." The headline is "THE ACOLYTE Beats X-MEN '97 To Become Most-Watched Disney+ Series Premiere Of 2024," that's what we're talking about.

"we've got episode 3 to air yet and I believe that's when viewers will drop off."

I genuinely cannot wait to see what y'all have been filling your pants about this whole time. Next Wednesday is going to be so funny.

@clintthahamster - it's basically 4.8 people who watched both not 2.4 that watched each one because it's total watched hours divided by run length. I'm sure there's some people that only watched some of it but honestly it was so short it's probably not too many especially when people seemed either morbidly curious or genuinely curious.
