Fans have long wondered how Grogu managed to escape the Jedi Temple during Order 66, and yesterday's episode of The Mandalorian finally offered some long-overdue answers...including who saved The Child!

Up until now, The Mandalorian has only really hinted at what happened to Grogu on the night of Order 66. We've seen glimpses of a group of Jedi attempting to protect The Child from the corrupted Clone Troopers, but have no idea who got him safely off Coruscant and out of the Empire's clutches.

Well, in "The Foundling," we finally got some answers.

Taking us back to the night of Order 66, the episode showed the Jedi fighting off the Clone Troopers inside the Jedi Temple as they tried to get Grogu to "Kelleran."

After being safely moved into an elevator, he's met by Jedi Master Kelleran Beq. If that name rings a bell, it's because this is the character played by Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best in the Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge game show. It appears The Mandalorian is giving the actor a second chance in the Star Wars Galaxy, though, and he does a fantastic job here.

After a perilous journey across Coruscant that sees them pursued by the Clone Troopers, Kelleran and Grogu arrive at a landing platform that's being guarded by what appear to be Naboo soldiers.

As they fight off the Clones, the duo board one of those shiny ships from the prequels and manage to escape into hyperspace. Unfortunately, that's where we leave them. In the present day, however, Grogu receives his own rondel - with the Mudhorn insignia - from The Armorer.

There's still a lot of story left to be told with Grogu. As well as that huge gap between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, we have no idea where he was during the sequel trilogy.

The Mandalorian takes place a few years after Return of the Jedi and, as far as we're aware, it wasn't until then that he landed in Moff Gideon's clutches (we also need to find out how those mercenaries captured him before the fateful day Din Djarin happened across him).

"The Foundling" offers a huge development in Grogu's story, anyway, and we cannot wait to see more from Kelleran. In the meantime, find everything you need to know about the Jedi Master here.

He escaped. That’s what happened. 3 seasons for the most underwhelming, awfully filmed n rushed backstory they could conjure up

@Cap1 - I mean that was evident from the start, wasn't it?

I feel like the whole scuttlebutt around Grogu during Order 66 wasn't around HOW he got out, but WHO got him out.

Also, has Grogu never heard loud noises before? How on earth did some steel clashing trigger those memories? Clearly ran out of ideas for this ep and thought ‘let’s include his origins in a contrived manner to make up the time and act as if we’re progressing the stagnant story’

@SpaceAgent - sure, entirely predictable since day one, so you’d think the guys who’re paid to write this stuff would try their slightest* to subvert expectations, but nope, it really is just that bland. And the ‘who’ is some random from a game who no one bar a few have any vague attachment to. So the ‘who’ is hardly groundbreaking

@Cap1 - I thought it was put together well. Not sure why you are hating on this so much. A loud noise can trigger memories and as for “he never heard loud noises before” just because he may have heard loud noises doesn’t mean it would have automatically triggered memories. He starting a new chapter in his life and the armorer words during that scene along with the “repetitive sequence of the noise” can indeed spark memories she talked about how “we shape ourselves how we all begin refining ourselves through trials and adversity the forge can reveal weaknesses”
I implore you to rewatch the scene

@Cap1 - the way I interpreted it, didn't Dinn also have flashbacks to his Origins when the armorer was crafting his new stuff in like season 1? Dinn being under attack then saved by the Mandalorians that took him in. Seems to me this Mandalorian ritual of listening to the armorer as like a spirit guide as she crafts your new stuff. Not everytime, but I saw it as a parallel to his papa Dinn. Exploring their Origins as foundlings.

@TheVandalore - oh snap you're right, that does explain why it was shown in that scene specifically. Doesn't excuse the hammy nature of it though, nor the general waste of his origin
UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/23/2023, 10:37 AM
@Cap1 - I mean it's 1 part of his origin, there's a wealth of stuff they could explore with what happenes in the years before he meets Mando.
Cap1
Cap1 - 3/23/2023, 10:38 AM
@UniqNo - sure, maybe they will and this is purely a foundation, but it's a very very wonky foundation
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 3/23/2023, 10:49 AM
@Cap1 - well, I don't agree it wasted anything about his Origins because we haven't seen practically anything yet. We don't know who this Jedi is, how long he was with Grogu, who else potentially takes Grogu... this could be part 1 of a like 8 part flash back arc we get over several seasons. Maybe this Jedis flashbacks parallel what's happening in Grogus present, then next season other flashbacks parallel that season. We have no idea where this is going yet.

As for the hammy nature, that may be a taste thing cuz I didn't find anything hammy personally but we are different people.

I hope upcoming episodes hit better for you. I was very disappointed last week but liked this one a lot.

@Cap1 - it was an existential crisis amidst finally commiting to The Way. Armorer tells him there will be major trials ahead. Dangerous trials and Grogus fear and anxiety comes to the forefront.

What an incredibly underwhelming origin and sloppy scene overall
UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/23/2023, 10:39 AM
@GhostDog - I agree it felt like it was just inserted there without any kind of proper lead up, but it's not like Grogo will be 'Telling' the story anytime soon.

Also it's not really an origin story as those event's lasted mere minutes. There's still all the time in between that and up to when he meets Mando all those years later. i think they're going to feed it in drips

Man this season *stinks* Bo Katan is a cool character I will be getting the $300 hot toy

But making her the hero for like 3 episodes and making Mando look like a chump

This is not what I signed up
Webster614
Webster614 - 3/23/2023, 12:48 PM
@0bstreperous - It's setting up a ton of shit. Just have some patience. It's a character arc for christs sake. Bo Katan didn't give a shit about "the way". This is building her to care for something more than her family name, and also a fight to lead the people back to their home planet. She's purposefully a focus... it's called story building. Why be so impatient?
0bstreperous
0bstreperous - 3/23/2023, 12:53 PM
@Webster614 - I have nothing against badass women but Mando doesn't look like a chump to you? He almost drowns, he gets captured grogu has to get Bo
Only Bo can find the dragon....

Come on it Kathleen's bs
Webster614
Webster614 - 3/23/2023, 12:59 PM
@0bstreperous - No, he doesn't look like a chump. Who cares if he gets captured and nearly drowns and needs Bo Katan to save him? Again, they're trying to build up more than just Mando. They're building to a Kryze v Vizsla fight to rule the Mandalore. You have to build up those characters to do so. Mando is the connection bringing all the pieces together. He doesn't have to be the baddest MFer in the universe every episode. It gets boring AF that way.
0bstreperous
0bstreperous - 3/23/2023, 1:48 PM
@Webster614 - Dude you don't see a pattern? It's the Bo show at this point.

Let's say at this trajectory she kills a mythosaur and beats Mando for the dark saber?

At that point would you tell me I'm being ridiculous?

Most disappointing episode so far, was looking forward to the flash back but it was pretty bland. When the dragon babies came out of the ship I groaned. Bo Katan is getting too much to do whilst Mando keeps getting beaten up and Grogu's baby noises where too much, got annoying. He sounded like a week old baby.
AC1
AC1 - 3/23/2023, 10:30 AM
@MarvelousMarty - Out of curiosity, why'd you groan at the dragon babies? Seems pretty in-keeping with the Mandalorians' sense of honour that they wouldn't leave the 3 babies to starve to death after basically killing their mother, and it's probably setting up some Mandalorians riding dragons into battle in the future which is a pretty cool visual!

@MarvelousMarty - Why Groan? They'll train and use/ride them. Why wouldn't they?
MarvelousMarty
MarvelousMarty - 3/23/2023, 11:59 AM
@ThorArms - there is NO way those three things would fit on her ship and if they did they would cause havoc on there.

Cool seeing Ahmed Best get to play his Jedi character in something this prominent and popular, and for him to have been so instrumental in rescuing Grogu as well.

I'm no fan of Jar Jar, mostly because of how overused and annoying the character was in Episode I, but the backlash Ahmed received and how much of a toll it took on him was [frick]ing heartbreaking to hear about, so it's really uplifting to see him in a much better place AND getting a chance to play another character in the franchise.

@AC1 -
Dude didn't write or design the character. All he did was take a job in a Star Wars movie. Good to see him redeemed.
AC1
AC1 - 3/23/2023, 12:33 PM
@Goldboink - Exactly, it wasn't his fault at all, he was playing a part that was already written and his performance was in line with the direction he was given. I can understand people not liking the character but the harassment and abuse he got was totally uncalled for.
