NAOMI Ordered To Series While The CW Passes On BLACK LIGHTNING Spinoff PAINKILLER

After recently wrapping the pilot, Ava DuVernay's Naomi adaptation is officially moving forward at The CW. The series is based on the character created by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, who debuted in Naomi #1 (March 2019).

In the comics, the character hails from an alternate universe where the reduction of the Earth's ozone layer led to 29 people developing superhuman abilities. Naomi is the first child to be born from two people possessing these superhuman abilities and is sent to Earth-0 (mainstream DC Comics Earth) to protect her from a would-be world conqueror.

Naomi has superhuman strength, durability and energy manipulation on par with Superman. She goes on to eventually join the Justice League.

Elsewhere, The CW has revealed that it has passed on Black Lightning spinoff focusing on Jordan Calloway's Painkiller. With the series finale of Black Lightning set to air later tonight, the future of the show in the Arrowverse looks pretty bleak, although THR notes that there's a possibility that the spinoff could land on HBO Max.

Effortlessly cool and confident high school student who is the adopted daughter of doting parents. Popular with all the kids in her military town, Naomi is unafraid to embrace her AP-student, comic book–loving nerdiness. After a supernatural event leads to the discovery of her powers within, Naomi pursues her hidden destiny

Hopefully they keep the Superman and Lois levels of quality. Once you watch that show the rest of CW superheroes look like pure trash.

@Starlord7597 - first off, love your thumbnail. Secondly, I say they just move Superman and Lois to max, that way the others shall look better again lol

Jesus christ, terrible news about them passing on Painkiller. Was really looking forward to that show, had quite a lot of potential and it seemed like it really was going to happen. Sure, let's hope it happens on HBO Max, but major bummer.

The CW has a pretty shitty track record with promising spin-offs. I'll no longer put any stock into the network announcing they are developing one.

@HeavyMetal4Life - This is just like Green Arrow and the Canaries.

@tugboy - exactly. 100%. Next time they announce a spin-off they should just retroactively cancel it, because they've shown that these spinoffs are just dead shows walking.

@HeavyMetal4Life - They tried twice to spin off Supernatural. The first attempt I feel was mandated and had no heart in it. The episode was The Originals but in Chicago. Then the 2nd attempt made sense and seemed sincere. Not sure what is making the CW so skiddish.

The Canaries thing surprised me too. While I wasn't interested in it, it still surprised me.

It seems like they are just closing up shop. Once Flash/Legends ends, that's it. Batwoman they might boot sooner then later.

@storyteller - yeah, they're certainly closing up shop and moving away from the Arrowverse, which [as I mention below] is a bit strange since imo, these shows kept the CW mostly relevant the past decade.

I do expect Flash and Legends to [at least for Flash, hopefully] end after the next seasons. Almost no one cares about Batwoman so I wouldn't be surprised if they end that soon too.

@HeavyMetal4Life - well we did get superman and lois and now Naomi. What you should probably not get your hopes up for is anything that starts as a backdoor pilot. Backdoor pilots never get picked up

@dracula - I could care less about Naomi to be honest.

Yes, I cannot praise Superman & Lois enough. Doesn't change what is clearly happening with the Arrowverse though. And yes, I will no longer get my hopes up for backdoor pilots that are all but confirmed at one point by the network to happen these days.

One could argue that Flash and Legends had backdoor pilots.

@tugboy - They really show rethink that show. Make it Superman and Lios level of quality and it could be great

@HeavyMetal4Life - Batwoman has gotten a take better. Still has the a ways to go. Give all the Arrowverse shows the same level of care they put in Superman & Lios and watch them fly(no pun intended)

@HeavyMetal4Life - yeah not sure about Naomi either

True Barry was introduced on Arrow although the actual backdoor pilot was scrapped.

Guess the Heroes Join Forces crossover was technically a backdoor pilot

@HeavyMetal4Life - Well, we all want what we can't have. 🤷‍♂️

@HeavyMetal4Life - Another one is that Wonder Girl show they announced around the same time as Naomi. But that never got anywhere.

@tugboy - totally forgot about that!

Did they seriously think that spinoff was gonna happen??🤦🤦🤦

I guess the future of the Arrowverse really is just Superman & Lois at this point. Black Lightning at this point was the 3rd best show in the Arrowverse (after Arrow and Superman & Lois).
