RUMOR: Sony Animation Developing An R-Rated VENOM Movie - But Will It Also Feature Spider-Punk?

While we're not getting too excited about this just yet, a new rumour is doing the rounds today which suggests Sony Animation, the studio behind the Spider-Verse franchise, is developing a Venom project.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were both critical and commercial hits, with many fans ranking them among the greatest comic book movies ever made.

There's a great deal of excitement to see how the story concludes in the currently undated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but what comes after that? We've heard rumblings about a female-led Spider-Woman spin-off for a few years, only for it to have seemingly never taken shape.

Elsewhere, live-action Silk and Spider-Man Noir TV shows are in the works, while movies like Madame WebKraven the Hunter, and Venom 3 are also on the horizon.

Last month, rumours swirled that Sony Pictures Animation is plotting a new Spider-Man movie with an R-Rating. It's a peculiar move on the studio's part, particularly as it would be an animated adventure; in theaters, those are typically aimed at younger viewers and not even Venom was granted an R.

Venom might finally be unleashed in a way that makes fans happy, though, as scooper @CanWeGetToast is claiming (via Toonado.com) this movie will put the spotlight on everyone's favourite symbiote!

We have no additional details beyond that and it's unclear what this means for reports claiming Spider-Punk is the focal point. It's not outside the realm of possibility that this story will take place on Earth-138, of course, with a crazy new take on Venom in the punk-rock reality.

2018's Venom has come under fire for its Spider-Man-less take on the anti-hero's origin story, and while Venom: Let There Be Carnage was an improvement, it still didn't deliver the interpretation of this character many fans would like to see on screen. A new animated Venom movie could go some way in fixing that.

This November's Venom 3, meanwhile, is expected to be Tom Hardy's "last dance" as Eddie Brock. With it looking unlikely Marvel Studios will ever pick up on Spider-Man: No Way Home's Venom tease, an animated project could be the next logical step to explore the popular Lethal Protector's story in a new way.

Venom first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #300 in 1988. Initially conceived as an alien symbiote that bonded with Spider-Man, Eddie Brock later became host to the alien costume after being introduced as a disgraced journalist seeking revenge on Spider-Man.

Characters like Flash Thompson, Mac Gargan, and Dylan Brock have all held the "Venom" moniker since, but Eddie remains a firm fan favourite and seems like the most logical choice of lead for his own animated movie.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

If true seems like it would be Eddie Brock Venom but I would love if we got Flash Thompson “Agent Venom”….

Specifically based on the Rick Remender run that is.

While I feel the rating should be enough to conclude its full of sh!t, it's also a shame animation in the US is still viewed as a kids thing.

Japan shows you can show some amazing adult oriented content through animation. And invincible showed its a good excuse to have a show on the s ale of a massive blockbuster while keeping the gore.

@Origame - I've been up and down the four corners of this big old world! I've seen it all! I've done it all! I've fought many a good man, and laid many a good woman! I've had riches and fame and adventure...I've tasted life to the fullest and if there's one thing I've learned it's that this world needs more animated titties!

I don't understand, no one in the comments put faith or even like these bulshit rumours and all you guys do is keep posting them. When everyone stops reading this site you'll wonder "oh boy I wonder what happened". Come on, it's lame by now, no one believes except you guys, why keep doing that? There's no "proven record" of anything that me or anyone could "scoop" as an obvious shit.

Peter Parker the one and only Spider-Man.

Sony are Japanese right? When Samurai fail as badly as the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel's Characters has, they would fall on their swords. They would spill their own guts and have a second person cut off their heads. This was the honorable thing to do. To commit Seppuku.

I suggest and recommend that Sony do the same. The honorable thing to do here is to sign the rights to Spider-Man and all related characters over to Marvel Studios' parent company, The Walt Disney Corporation with a full written apology to both them, the fans and their own staff.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record. Do AGENT VENOM have Alan Ritchson play Flash Thompson.
