Despite initial projections that Venom would debut with $7 million last night, it's now been revealed that the movie exceeded expectations with a $10 million haul. That's a great start for Sony's first live-action Spider-Verse spinoff and it marks a record in terms of October previews. Analysts are predicting a total weekend haul of $57 million - $65 million and some suggest it could top the $70 million mark.
While this may seem like Venom is on track to being a box office hit, The Hollywood Reporter cautions that the movie could end up being front-loaded and that the negative reviews may have an impact on how well it ends up doing. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice broke records when it opened but ultimately proved to be a disappointment after it plummeted during its second weekend of release.
In other news, the movie's director has addressed the mid-credits scene featuring Woody Harrelson [MAJOR SPOILER WARNING] as the villainous Cletus Kasidy. He explains that the actor was the only person he ever envisioned as the villain and confirms the sequel would pit Venom against Carnage.
"He was the first person I thought of to play Cletus Kasady. And what will be fun is, if you think about Woody in Natural Born Killers, and that darkness and that menace that he can bring to a serial killer like Cletus Kasady, you know, he can go real dark and explore that. Carnage is going to be… just thinking about Venom pitting off against Carnage is just so exciting. And hopefully fans leave the movie really looking forward to that next one. Because I think also just seeing Tom and Woody go head to head, you know, those are two great actors that I think can really create some exciting scenes."
