Some exciting names have been added to the cast of The Last of Us in major supporting roles over the past week or so, but up until now, we hadn't heard anything about the new directors that have been enlisted for the second season of HBO's critically-acclaimed video game adaptation.

According to Jeff Sneider in the latest edition of his newsletter, Kate Herron, who directed every episode of the first season of Marvel Studios' Loki before deciding to step away from the Disney+ serieswill helm at least one episode of The Last of Us season 2.

Herron has also directed episodes of Netflix's Sex Education and Daybreak, and written an episode of Doctor Who.

This news follows the recent announcements that Isabela Merced (Madame Web, Superman: Legacy) will play Ellie's love-interest Dina, Young Mazino (Beef) will play the heroic Jesse, and Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick, No One Will Save You) has been cast as the season's deuteragonist (or antagonist, depending on your point of view), Abby Anderson.

There are quite a few key roles yet to be filled, including the likes of Owen, Mel, Yara and Lev, so expect more casting announcements over the next couple of weeks.

Bella Ramsey (Ellie) and Pedro Pascal (Joel) will reprise their lead roles.

The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Season 1's cast also featured Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, Elaine Miles as Florence, Ashley Johnson as Anna, and Troy Baker as James.

Production on the second season is scheduled to begin next month in Vancouver, since a significant part of the story in The Last of Us Part II game is set in the Pacific Northwest.

The Last of Us is written and executive produced by Mazin and Druckmann. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam also executive produce.

@harryba11zack - you don't like Last of Us TV show?

@mastakilla39 - No.

@harryba11zack - just curious, why?

I thought it was a good adaptation as they got most of the characters, chemistry, and the relationships right. Joel is not as much of a crazy killer and badass as the game nor are there a lot of clicker action but that didn't ruin it for me.

@mastakilla39 - I'll try to keep it short.

For me Joel was so watered down. The writing was bad and I wasn't a fan of what they did with Joel and Ellie. Their relationship was far too rushed and it didn't feel natural yet the show had a longer time frame then the game's cutscenes.

Hated how inconsistent the infected would act, one second they are crazy runners going after people trying to infect them then the next second they are all slow and give out free kisses. That tentacle mouth sh1t was just stupid looking.

The scene in Indonesia with the stupid "scientist expert" old lady. Her reaction to the fungus was very unrealistic and unprofessinal as to how that would go down in the in the real world. "wipe the city clean" it was clearly played up for the drama I know but it annoyed me.

How they handled Frank. In the game Frank served a purpose that helped to progess the story. He helped them with getting them a car but he also showed the audience what kind of a person Joel would become if he continued to push people away. In the tv show he's gay.....yep thats about it really. in the game he is interesting character who just happens to be gay. In the show a full episode is just wasted on him being gay and killing himself. It just had a negative effect on the flow of the story and goes off on a tangent. he doesn't even interact with Ellie.

The guy had an armoury of weapons in his house and Joel for some stupid reason decides not to load up the car with any of it.....WTF?

I didn't like how they handled the cameoes for the OG voice acts in the show. In the game Elliee's potty mouth was due to her rough upbringing. In the show the potty mouth is now inherited from a mother she never spoke with?

Like antman 3, The show trys to push a positive spin on communism with the community of Jackson sh1t. that part is when the show killed any good will I had for it.

They should give her a whole show. Loki S1 was one of the good D+ shows.

The last of us season 1 was such a disappointment for me. They took the zombies away. One of the things I loved about thr game was this weird juxtaposition between the humans and the zombies.

The journey was supposed to be perilous because the zombies but the humans turned out to be monsters too, but in the end both sides just wanted to survive and that was the interesting part.

They took away the zombies for foreshadowing “you’re a protector Joel” way too many times. I think what they did for season 1 fits more so last of us part 2, but I digress

@MyCoolYoung - Don't think we can get boss battles on tv because the budget will be over 200 mil+ and it was already expensive enough making some of the clickers with practical vfx. Its following The Walking Dead formula to work for tv as the comics are more gruesome too.

Definitely agree on the changes they made to flow with Part 2 better. Ellie definitely felt more like the main character in the TV Show and more fleshed out than Joel. Joel was also nerfed with age and the hearing problem compared to the game.

Overall didn't effect the quality as getting a 4/5 on a video game adapation is rare in general.

@MyCoolYoung - I didn't knew I could agree with you more, but you're definitely right the approach definitely fits Part 2 better

@mastakilla39 - I wasn’t necessarily looking for boss battles. They technically had one when all the zombies came out and that was the worst part in a great episode. I feel like you needed more zombies so we can buy the whole “Joel’s the only one who could make this journey” thing.

I didn’t buy the bonding of the 2 characters either. I gave it a 3/5. I felt like the whole thing was Emmy bait but got some good episodes out of it and some really so so ones as well

@bkmeijer1 - and I hope they don’t go bigger is better in season 2 and up the zombie count. Part 2 was the more tame story about revenge and how it affects everyone. I’m actually really interested in seeing it play out

@MyCoolYoung - I kinda hope they'll tell the story chronologically so we'll only get the Jackson stuff in S2. Thar way it can have both zombies and revenge, before going all in on revenge in S3 in Seattle
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 1/21/2024, 4:07 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I think that would be for the best. Season can end with the death of Joel and pick up after that

@MyCoolYoung - agreed. Leave the Seattle and Santa Barbara stuff for S3
