VIDEO GAMES: GRAND THEFT AUTO V And THE LAST OF US Win Big At Spike's VGX 2013 Awards

Unsurprisingly, 2013's two best games - Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us - walked away with a lot of the big prizes at Spike's VGX 2013 Awards last night.

Some may call it a predictable choice, but it's hard to argue with the logic of selecting Grand Theft Auto V as the "Game of the Year", despite the fact that it faced off against the likes of BioShock Infinite, Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us and Tomb Raider in that category. Still, the one game which many thought could take down Rockstar's latest release was The Last of Us, and while it fell slightly short of doing so, the superb release still managed to walk away with awards for "Best PlayStation Game", "Best Studio", and perhaps most deservedly, honours for its superb voice cast.

Too bad Spike's video game awards is a joke.
It's basically a popularity contest, that shitty Walking Dead point and click "game" won Game of the Year last year... that's not a game.

Great list although I thought last of us will be the GOTY.
And Why Batman: Arkham Origins didn't even get the Nomination.that means Rocksteady have to go big next year.

I think we can all agree that Joel McHale single-handedly made this show the hellhole it was. What a loser. I was trying to watch with my family and he mentioned stuff like uterus smoke!

I haven't played the last of us but looks like any previous on-rails-survival-zombie-game. It reminds me of Half Life and that's over ten years old.

I kind of regret buying The Last of Us. Great graphics but i did not care about the characters that much and gameplay was so boring. Seriously, I love Uncharted but Last of Us sucked. Its suppost to be fun ence it being a game. Haven't played GTA 5 but it seems a whole lot more fun. If guys disagree than stick with that and Walking dead. Meanwhile i'll be playing Infamous and Batman Arkham series over and over again without getting bored.

GTA V got real boring quick. The Last of Us deserved that.

GTA 5 was over rated at best. It was a great game but it was decent but a brilliant game to look at.

Glad Black Flag is up there along with Bioshock Infinite. The Last of Us deserves way more credit.

Shame that Tomb Raider didn't win anything. It is a great game and it really surprised me.

GTA5 for as fun as it was does not deserve game of the year. The only reason it won is because its called GTA. I actually found myself getting bored about 3 quarters of the way into the game, including completing most sides and going for collectibles. And the fact its online is a complete shambles.

"GTA5 for as fun as it was does not deserve game of the year. The only reason it won is because its called GTA."

Or maybe...because it is considered a great game? O_o

I knew that GOTY would go to GTA5 or TLOU. It's funny that people are getting upset that TLOU didn't win.lol

@MexicanSuperman Congratulations, you have the honor of being one of the stupidest people I've ever met. Seriously, I feel embarrassed for being on the same site as someone that compares Movies to Videogames. The most important part of a game is the gameplay and the objective of a developer should be to make creative levels that challange you as much as possible. Give us features that we haven't seen before. A game that also has good storytelling should be awarded but the objective is to do something never done before and that's where NaughtyDog failed. Besides, how good is a writer if he doesn't make you care about the characters. I cared about what Cole would do in Infamous and i was kind of sad when he died and when he had to kill his best friend. On the other hand i didn't care about the Joel's daughter and i wouldn be sad if Ellie had died at the end of the game. But hey, congratulations for NaughtyDog for making me not want to buy a sequel to the game. If they keep going on this road then maybe a few thousand people will accompany me. But don't worry cause I'm not going to start playing stupid games instead, not I'll make sure to watch the Walkthrough on Youtube. I'll probably have as much fun. In the meantime i'll happly go play Watchdogs and Infamous Second Son when they come out.

GTA V is a worthy winner and I had fun playing it but it din't grab me like The Last of Us and it didn't leaving me thinking long after I played it. That may not be what is required of Game of the Year though.

Batmaniac, how far did you get? The game does take a little bit to get into but once it hits its stride it will waste all of your time!

I just don't understand the fascination with these GTA games. I understand that they're huge games and there's "lots to do" - which usually means there is a decent number of things you can do over and over. Every GTA game I try has me bored within a few hours.

The one that actually pisses me off most, though, is Gone Home winning two awards. I made the mistake of paying $20 for that game a while back after hearing so many good things. I actually do love the exploration feel but when you finally get to the end, less than two hours later, it feels like you were just cheated out of $20 and the last two hours of your life. The game starts by making you think there might be some mystery or sci-fi or something supernatural going on but at the end it is nothing more than a love story. Really pissed me off and seeing this is opening those wounds again...

@Thorablesight

I agree 100% with you on Far Cry 3. One of the most surprisingly well made games I've played in awhile. I was expecting GTA 5 to be good because of the series history. Far Cry 2 wasn't bad at all, but I wasn't expecting a very well written story and one of the most memorable video game villains of recent times.

The Last of Us should have been GOTY. Best video game I've ever played.
