In what's sure to be very exciting news for gamers, Deadline in reporting that Amazon Studios is nearing a deal to develop a live-action show based on Electronic Arts' best-selling Mass Effect video game series.

Details are few and far between, but this is said to be one of several genre projects in the works for the streamer following the success of The Boys and the recent Wheel of Time adaptation, which, according to Amazon head Jennifer Salke, was the "most watched series premiere of the year and one of the Top 5 series launches of all time for Prime Video.”

“You will see us continuing to invest in fantasy genre of all kinds, we have a genre-focused team on the ground in Studios who work tirelessly with our creative partners on those slates, and you can look forward to more,” Salke added.

Speculation mounted that a Mass Effect movie or series might be in the planning stages when Man of Steel and The Witcher star Henry Cavill took to social media to tease a mysterious new project he may or may not be associated with earlier this year. We have no idea if this is the same show that Amazon is working on, but it certainly seems like a decent possibility.

Mass Effect is a popular sci-fi action video game franchise created by Casey Hudson, Drew Karpyshyn and Preston Watamaniuk. The first game follows Systems Alliance Navy vet Commander Shepard who faces off against an ancient machine race known as The Reapers when they attempt to invade the Milky Way.

We'll update as soon as we hear more, but for now, be sure to let us know what you make of this news in the comments.

Were these games any good? I never really played them. How could they translate to movies?

@MyCoolYoung - Yes, they were amazing.

Andromeda was alright, but a weak point in the series (the newer one). It can translate REALLY well, but it needs a good budget.

Hmm, hope it turns out okay, but if I can be honest, the interactivity was what made those games. The universe and main storyline has basically been done before on Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, etc. It was a very safe and familiar sci-fi world, BUT the ability to navigate it and impact decisions, making alliances with this race instead of that one, made it so much fun. A generic, male, hero Sheperd is so dull compared to the ability to make your MC anyone you choose.

I just finished the trilogy for the first time. Truly, one of the great epics of our generation, alongside Avatar The Last Airbender and Harry Potter.
