We've seen some photos from the set of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but those revealed little more than the fact Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will all share the screen at some point.
Now, though, a plot synopsis has surfaced online (via IGN) that sheds more light on what to expect from the sequel. It comes our way via a copyright filing from Paramount Pictures and Sega, and confirms that Knuckles will actually be teaming up with Jim Carrey's villainous Dr. Robotnik!
"After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation," it reads. "But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands."
It makes sense that Knuckles would initially want to take Sonic down given the history between their ancestors, though we're sure that they'll eventually become friends and partners. While that's likely to take a while, Sonic and Tails teaming up is bound to make fans of the video games very happy indeed.
As for Robotnik, fans are hoping that Carrey will undergo some sort of transformation that brings him a little more in line with what we're used to seeing from "Eggman" in the video games.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to be released in theaters on April 8, 2022.
