There's been no shortage of Star Wars video games released over the past couple of decades, but no matter how far back you go, you'd be hard pressed to find one that's truly open world. That's because there's never been one -- until now.

Ubisoft revealed Star Wars Outlaws today during the Xbox Game Showcase. In development by Ubisoft Massive, the studio behind The Division series, Star Wars Outlaws is the first open-world Star Wars game ever created.

Star Wars Outlaws features an original story set between the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. We were only treated to a cinematic teaser trailer today, but we did meet the main protagonist: Kay Vess, a cunning scoundrel seeking the means to start a new life. Constantly on the run and looking over her shoulder, Vess is offered an opportunity to start anew. But it will require pulling off the most daring heist the Outer Rim has ever seen.

As teased by Ubisoft:

Fans will play as cunning scoundrel, Kay Vess, brought to life by Humberly González, and her loyal companion Nix, played by Dee Bradley Baker (Star Wars: The Bad Batch™), as they attempt one of the greatest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen. Seeking the means to start a new life, players will join Kay and Nix as they fight, steal, and outwit their way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates and join the galaxy’s most wanted.

Check out the first teaser trailer for Star Wars Outlaws below:

"When we first imagined the first open-world Star Wars game, we explored where and when it could take place, and quickly realized that we had all the right ingredients for the journey of a scoundrel. These outlaws live life under the thumb of the Galactic Empire, but can still thrive given the opportunities that the criminal underworld opens up for people looking to take advantage of the turmoil,” said Julian Gerighty, Creative Director at Massive Entertainment. “The time is ripe for a new outlaw to make their name, and Kay Vess is written in the stars.”

“With Star Wars Outlaws, we’re excited to deliver the first truly open world Star Wars game, with an action-adventure story filled with characters and planets both new and well-known to the Star Wars galaxy,” added Douglas Reilly, vice president of Lucasfilm Games. “We have been working closely with the talented team at Massive Entertainment, and with their years of experience in creating richly-detailed worlds, we’re excited for fans to be able to jump into the Star Wars scoundrel fantasy like never before.”

The first gameplay for Star Wars Outlaws will be revealed tomorrow, June 12, during Ubisoft Forward. Fans can tune into the livestream at 10:00 a.m. PDT / 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Star Wars Outlaws is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024.

Ubisoft can be pretty hit and miss, but the idea of an open world SW game is pretty exciting.

@ModHaterSLADE - Yea I'm pretty much a life long gamer and Ubisoft was one of the last few companies you could count on.Jezz I used to buy their games without even watching a trailer but you are right they are now hit or miss mostly miss. The only company I really count on and it just my opinion is Rockstar the put time and effort into the games the make. They don't rush a game if it not ready they push it back and I would rather that then playing a half ass game. One of the reasons also is they don't have a hundred IP's on the go at the same time it's pretty much GTA and Red dead only.

@pitbull76 - Agreed. Rockstar hardly ever stumbles on anything they put out.

Massive is a hack studio. The Division 2 has been a poorly supported joke. They don't care. This game will be bad too.

Yup I'll be skipping this, I want an open world Star Wars game but I don't want to play as a female lead.

@marvel72 - I know you're probably trolling. But every SW game has had a male lead. You can't play as a woman this one time? If they made a proper Ashoka or Leia game you wouldn't play it?

@DarthOmega - It's called choice, you can be male or female in Diablo 4.

And that is only one example.

The only Star Wars games I have played are.

Star Wars:The Arcade Game
Super Star Wars
Super Empire Strikes Back
Super Return Of The Jedi
Star Wars:Knights Of The Old Republic
Star Wars:Battlefront
Star Wars:Battlefront 2

@CaptainAmerica - Hey if this is what you want out of a Star Wars game, knock yourself out.

I did say I wanted to have the choice male or female character not be forced to play just with her.

@marvel72 - are you 5 years old?
marvel72
marvel72 - 6/12/2023, 6:50 AM
@CaptainAmerica - Age has nothing to do with it, if you want to play a game where you can only play as a girl, so be it but remember Star Wars was aimed at boys, hence why Leia was the only main female character in the original trilogy.

I bet them Rey action figures are flying off the shelves.

@DarthOmega - my only gripe, is I kind of wish this wasn’t set during the reign of the empire. Ideally after there defeat but before the Force Awakens. Just a personal preference and it’s minor but I feel like the empire is a bit overdone

2024? Damn that's right around the corner. They must mean holiday 2024, because this is seriously the first I've heard of this.

Some Star Wars fan I call myself. I should've known about this. Even though there isn't any gameplay, I say bring it on!

But ffs. Try a different era. I personally love the era but enough already. I used to get annoyed when people said that, but I feel them
