THE LEGEND OF ZELDA TV Series In The Works With CASTLEVANIA's Adi Shankar In Talks To Produce

Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda is being adapted for television, with Castlevania's Adi Shankar in talks to produce.

The Wrap broke the news after Shankar took to Instagram to tease the project, revealing that he was “working with an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series.” The report does not mention whether this adaptation will be live-action or animated or which network has picked it up, but hopefully we'll find out soon.

There can't be many people that haven't heard of Zelda, but for the uninitiated the games are set in the fictional land of Hyrule, and tell the story of an adventurer named Link (who looks a lot like an elf but is actually a member of the Hylian race) as he attempts to rescue Princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil wizard, Ganon.

The games have spawned everything from comics, to toys, to a short lived animated series, and Zelda is one of the most popular, revered properties out there.

Awesome. Of course though a Legend of Zelda movie would be the property to finally break the video game movie curse. But I’ll take whatever.

@TheUnworthyThor - im glad that they are still working on it, but im not crazy about this guy. gonna make the show dark, gritty and unnecessarily gorey.

@elcaballerooscuro92 - I don’t really see that as a possibility with this license. Nintendo would never let one of their top franchises be represented in any of those ways. All of that will be FAR toned down from what it is in Castlevania.

You know, video game properties could become the new comicbook movie if they handled them right.

Imagine an Nintendo shared universe with a Zelda movie inspired by Lord of the Rings, mixing with a Super Mario movie I can imagine being similar to Guardians of the Galaxy in tone.

@Knightrider - As much as I would love this i don't think we're quite there yet.
Comic books have been a part of pop culture since the 40's (DC)/60's(Marvel).
It's been around long enough that all the old directors and excs that run Hollywood know at least the basics of most comic characters through cultural osmosis even if they have never read a comic.
Video games simply aren't there yet.
And even then DC is struggling right now because they fully backed a director who didn't really understand the characters.

I'm sure there are directors and writers who know and love the medium enough they could do a great video game movie.
But you would need to hunt down and put together a specific team to get a good video game movie out of Hollywood right now.

When the people greenlighting the movies are people who grew up when video games became part of pop culture, then we can start getting a lot of great video game movies.

An anime-style show like Castlevania would be great! I just want it to be it's own story in the timeline and not an adaptation of a specific game.

I hope that if this is true that Adi Shankar would be true to the games and not make the series vulgar and gory. Castlevania is a great series, but gruesome would not look good on a Zelda series.

Am I missing something? If he's going to announce what the series is on Nov. 16th, how do we know it's Zelda now?

A show is very smart, the Zelda canon is so large a movie wouldn't make sense. Hopefully it's animated.

Maybe he works with Capcom on Ghosts ’n Goblins, Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry or Dino Crisis.

Can't wait for Castlevania Season 3 and Assassins Creed
