VIDEO GAMES: THE AVENGERS PROJECT Director Confirms Studio Is "Hard At Work" On The "Very Ambitious" Game

With Square Enix's The Avengers Project a no-show at last week's Game Awards, creative director Shaun Escayg assured fans the studio is hard at work on the game and promised more "when the time is right."

Leading up to The Game Awards show last week, many believed Square Enix would finally reveal The Avengers Project, their mysterious Marvel game from developer Crystal Dynamics. With Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo on stage, it was seemingly the perfect opportunity, but the moment passed and fans were left with disappointment.

Sensing the frustration, Shaun Escayg, the game's creative director, took to social media to thank fans for their interest and confirm that the studio is still "hard at work" on the highly anticipated, "very ambitious" game.

Unfortunately, the tweet offers little in terms of actual details as we still don't know what The Avengers Project actually is or when it will be unveiled.

First revealed back in January 2017, Square Enix teased The Avengers Project as "being designed for gamers worldwide" and "packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise." They promised a completely original story that "will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come."

Square Enix initially promised more details in 2018, but that no longer appears to be the case. At this point, we're likely looking at a reveal sometime in 2019, probably no earlier than E3 in June. If that happens, it's possible The Avengers Project could launch in late 2019, but a 2020 or 2021 release date seems more realistic. That would probably put it in line with the launch of the next generation of gaming systems which is what a recent job listing for developer Crystal Dynamics originally called for. This could also explain why we've seen and heard so little about the game thus far.

A game based on beloved Marvel heroes, The Avengers project is being crafted by Crystal Dynamics – longtime developers of the award winning Tomb Raider series – in collaboration with lauded Deus Ex developer Eidos-Montréal.

The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.

Initially thought to be in development for Xbox One and PS4, it's now looking more likely that The Avengers Project will release for next-gen systems that have yet to be announced.

Hopefully they don't forget X-Men and FF in that grand universe. Tired of everything being MCU.

@bobevanz - What if Disney created a live action streaming game channel?
Gamers would connect in the usual way through their consoles but people who simply wanted to watch it could view it on the streaming channel? Would people find a really really great game experience as entertaining as other media viewing options?

@MosquitoFarmer - so square enix devs are composed entirely by cats. This...actually makes a lot of sense.

Square Enix has a bad history of announcing a game way too early. Sometimes they won’t release for up to 7 years after announcement.
