Warner Bros. announced that filming was underway on the Wonder Woman sequel earlier this week, and to get the jump on some amateur set photos, they also debuted a couple of official stills - one of which got a lot of people talking!

Along with the press release, the pics did confirm a few long-standing rumors, but also raised even more questions about the plot of Diana's second solo adventure.

Below, we take a closer look at everything we know for certain about Wonder Woman 1884 so far, while offering a healthy dose of speculation in the process!

When that first logo for the sequel was released via Twitter, a lot of people assumed that "Wonder Woman 1984" might simply be a tentative or placeholder title, but the recent press release confirmed that it is indeed what the film will officially be called upon release.

Fans seem to be a bit divided on this, but the '80s setting is obviously integral to the story, and anyway, isn't it better than going with something generic like Wonder Woman 2?

The Setting

Just in case the title didn't make it clear, yes, Wonder Woman 2 will indeed take place in the mid-80s towards the end of the Cold War. To further hammer this home, one of the new stills features Diana gazing at a bank of TVs displaying various 1980s pop-culture images.

This is something that has been rumored for quite some time now, but the press release also confirms that the shooting locations will be Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia, and in the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands, which may offer some further plot clues.

The Villain

Patty Jenkins herself confirmed that Cheetah will be the main antagonist (at least, that's what we're being led to believe!) in Wonder Woman 2, and the character will be brought to life by Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters, Bridesmaids).

We still don't know for sure how Cheetah will factor into the plot, but a reliable source has indicated that she will start out as Diana's friend before emulating the hero and attempting to usurp here. This mirrors the Barbara Minerva incarnation of the villain's comic arc.

Pedro Pascal

Another casting addition that was confirmed by the press release was former Game of Thrones alum, Pedro Pascal.

There's no indication of which character he'll be playing, which has inevitably led to rampant speculation.

Right now, the most popular theory seems to be that he'll actually be playing Maxwell Lord, but there are obviously countless possibilities.

Steve Trevor

Yes, Chris Pine will return as Steve Trevor... somehow.

This has become the biggest WW1984 talking point since the image above was released by Patty Jenkins, and there are already numerous theories relating to how the character could be back in Diana's life.

Did he somehow survive the explosion? If so, why hasn't he aged? Perhaps he's  not Steve Trevor at all, but a descendant? The most interesting theory suggests that Hades will actually be involved in resurrecting Steve in order to manipulate Wonder Woman for his own ends.

To Wonder Woman comicbook fans, the year 1984 means something special?

@Oskir - Steve Trevor died in the comics and was resurrected by Aphrodite. In 1984's issue #322, it is revealed that the real Steve was never resurrected at all, but was really Aphrodite's son, Eros, in disguise as Steve. Eros is also the son of Ares. This is the story I think they will go with, or something very similar. It can't be a coincidence that both the movie and comic deal with the resurrection of Steve Trevor and also take place in 1984.

The supposed tackling of the AIDS crisis has really intrigued me. As well as Cheetah's character arc.

I’m not on board until they share what percentage of the runtime will be in slow motion.

Everything we know about WW84 so far:

Same crappy lead actress.

Same crappy Snyderverse.

Kristen Wiig as Cheetah. Yep, yet another miscast character. Is Snyder still doing their casting???

Gal still posting embarrassing "work-out" pics that show she doesn't work out, but needs to. Never going to earn this character.

They're clueless about how people dressed in the 80s.

Chris Pine is back. Because, um, reasons. Because he carried the first movie, and we need him back.

And... uggh who cares? That's enough for me right there. Not going to bother seeing this. You didn't wow me with Wonder Woman, and this is just more of the same uninspired lackluster mediocrity. Wiig makes me think maybe even worse.
