WONDER WOMAN 1984: New Synopsis Points To Diana Prince Having To Save The World From Collapsing

A newly revealed synopsis for Wonder Woman 1984 sheds some more light on what we can expect from the DC Comics sequel, with Diana Prince seemingly tasked with saving the world from a massive conspiracy...

Providing COVID-19 doesn't cause any further delays, Wonder Woman 1984 will arrive in theaters in October 2nd, 2020. It's already been delayed multiple times, of course, but if the situation worsens and Tenet slips from its planned September debut, then Warner Bros. will have to decide whether to push it further down the calendar or consider some sort of VOD release.

The latter seems unlikely all things considered, but stranger things have happened this year, and the studio has already faced its fair share of embarrassments thanks to Tenet's countless delays.

We're forced to wait and see when it comes to Wonder Woman 1984's release, but in the meantime, a new Japanese synopsis for Patty Jenkins' sequel has been shared online. The translation is a little patchy in places (we're pretty sure Maxwell Lord doesn't actually sing), but it sounds like the stakes in the movie are going to be higher than many fans have imagined.

"As an archaeologist, Diana who works at the Smithsonian Museum, is a Wonder Woman who has extraordinary superpowers, said to be the strongest hero in the world," it reads. "In 1984, Wonder Woman is in desperate deadly danger in face of an enormous conspiracy of the businessman Max, who sings loudly to fulfill people's desires, and a mysterious foe, Cheetah. Can Wonder Woman stop the world’s collapse alone?"

This likely ties into Wonder Woman 1984's Cold War setting, and retconning Diana Prince into history this way is a pretty smart move. However, it also contradicts what we previously learned about the character in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League

-Isn't that the same basic plot of just about EVERY superhero movie ever? 😜

@Feralwookiee - and yet people will still claim its more evidence of this being a ragnarok rip off.

The world's already collapsing in real life. Not that much of a stretch.

Said to be the strongest hero in the world? Now I have questions. Are they talking superheroes? I so, what other known heroes are there. Also, if this is known, then why do neither Supes or Bats have any clue who she is in BvS?
WakandanQueen

@inkniron - Because BvS isn't canon

Yes, she can stop the collapse. We know she will appear in BvS, we know she will appear in Justice League, and we know Patty Jenkins plans to helm Wonder Woman 3. There are very few surprises, and the longer they extend this light press tour, the more tiresome the movie gets for me in these parts.

I was hoping for something a bit smaller. You don't always have to show powerful superheroes having to save the whole world. You can shrink the conflict to a city or country. Out of respect to comic book lore, I think Supes should always be the first established hero, in a shared universe. When Wonder Woman gets rebooted, I hope they modernize her origin story. Get her and Steve Trevor out of the past.

I [frick]iing hate her as archeologist. Shes a [frick]ing Ambassador. New 52 [frick]ed up everything.

@aresww3 -
How can she be an ambassador if she's exiled from her home country?
Diana as Indiana Jones works, especially if she's looking out for mythological objects around the world.

@Battabing - Because her being exiled is also dumb and adds nothing. Drop her being exiled what changed of the first movie? 2. Her running away instead of being in a contest was also a bad idea.

I love the first movie and what Patty did. But most of the things that sucked about the first movie was where they changed wonder woman lore.

The contest to become WW, the gods all being dead, her exile. NONE added anything narratively to the movie and shouldn't have been there. Also it being set in WW1 was stupid. Again I love the movie, but for the sake of a franchise, that kind of time hopping is dizzying. Messes up her supporting cast and forces dumb crap like bringing Steve Trevor back.

WW is not Indiana Jones. She's WW and WW is an Ambasador which allows her to deal with political stuff and wars in a much more organic way. She is the Emissary Of Peace. That's why Ares is her best villain because he's her exact opposite.

@Battabing - That's like saying making Batman an actual detective on a police force in Gotham makes more sense than him being a billionaire, because he's a detective. If you want wonder woman looking for mythological objects, then give her a supporting character that works in a museum. And you know what she had one. her name was Barberra Munerva. So why does Diana herself have to. Also WW is a symbol of truth, she shouldn't have a secret identity. That's what makes her different and contrast with BM and SM. WW in a museum does not live up to the grandeur of the symbol that she is.

@Battabing - that's the come back. MAYBE READ some wonder woman comics then come back and talk.
Battabing
Battabing - 8/6/2020, 7:19 AM
@aresww3 - The fact that you think Diana doesn't have a secret identity, when in her very first comic she traded identities with an Army nurse suggests maybe you should read more than just the Perez or Rucka runs.

Don't try to fight with me about Wonder Woman.
aresww3
aresww3 - 8/6/2020, 8:29 AM
@Battabing - Okay, okay. I'll give you that lol. Maybe you know more than I thought. So you should know what I'm talking about.

But the fact is most Wonder Woman runs are pretty bad outside Rucka, Simone and Perrez, so really that should be the template for wonder woman movies IMO.

They made sense of the original mythos, where most runs since have been determined to mess up all the good work they did.
aresww3
aresww3 - 8/6/2020, 8:31 AM
@Battabing - Also wonder woman the superhero was still an ambassador in the original run, even though she did have a secret identity that was a nurse.
Battabing
Battabing - 8/6/2020, 8:38 AM
@aresww3 - Movies aren't always direct translations of the comics.
Even in the WW film, Hippolyta states that she fashioned Diana from clay and was brought to life by Zeus, which is still consistent with the comics and plays to Greek myth. Yes, the feminist component of her origin was simplified because Diana was raised by a powerful society of women anyway.
Battabing
Battabing - 8/6/2020, 8:39 AM
@aresww3 - Nobody is saying she can't be an ambassador later. Right now, she doesn't have a nation to be an ambassador for.
