With Wonder Woman 1984 looking increasingly unlikely to stick with its December 25 theatrical debut thanks to the ongoing pandemic, recent reports indicated that Warner Bros. was still mulling over how to proceed with the release of Patty Jenkins' DC Comics sequel. Now, it looks like the studio is close to making a decision.
Although the movie is highly unlikely to skip theatres entirely, Variety reports that studio execs are considering pushing Dina's second solo adventure to the summer of 2021. There's also talk of keeping the Christmas day theatrical release, but sending it to the HBO Max streaming service in early January.
Placing a huge superhero tentpole like WW84 on HBO Max after a shortened theatrical run would certainly be a major draw for the streamer, which is still trailing competitors Disney+ and Netflix by considerable margins despite exceeding expectations for its third quarter. However, WB is sure to tread extra carefully after Tenet's disappointing BO performance, and most seem to feel that a shift to summer 2021 is the most likely outcome here.
We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but an official announcement from Warner Bros. can't be too far off this late in the game.
