An All-Female X-MEN Movie Was Pitched To Fox By A Longtime Franchise Producer

Fox could've been ahead of the curve with an all-female X-Men film but rejected the pitch from producer Lauren Shuler Donner. With the merger looming, perhaps Marvel Studios will revisit the idea?

Wonder Woman was the first bright spot in a floundering superhero cinematic universe and Captain Marvel is aiming to set its own records next month for Walt Disney and Marvel. In the current age of #MeToo, female-driven television and films are very hot commodities in Tinseltown as every studio looks to create and cement tentpoles around leading Hollywood actresses.

In a new interview, longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed that Fox could have set the trend with an "X-Women" film.

I frankly wanted to see an X-Women movie,” Donner told Decider at theTelevision Critics Association’s 2019 winter tour. “I didn’t get it through. But I think that would be cool. I think — not to have no guys in it, you have to have guys in it — but to make instead of Charles and Magneto at the helm it’ll be whomever. Kitty Pryde and Illyana [Rasputin]. Something like that.

Just recently, an in-development, all-female Marvel superhero team-up drama was canceled at ABC but that likely had more to do with the launch of Disney+. Perhaps the forthcoming streaming platform's live-action Scarlet Witch series will be a precursor to a similar concept?

This may have fixed the vastly awful characterisation of the female characters in these movies, but I really don't think I wanted such a movie from FOX.

@DnA - Agreed I would be open to the Marvel version of the female mutants and not the fox version I am done there.

@DnA - Not like the guys got off much better. Look at poor Cyclops, Angel, Gambit, Havok.
And we had a few good females. Mystique and X-23.
Really the only characters that got good characterization for more then a few minutes where Wolverine, Magneto, Beast, and Xavier.

I'd reject that idea just because every time they've done an all female Xteam in the comics, it turned out terrible. Now if they could find a classic female story worth filming, then go for it. But the only decent one I can remember was the shopping trip to the mall when they met Jubilee. Or maybe Storm and Yukio, but Deadpool 2 kinda ruined that.

Coulda shoulda woulda.

But none of the established X-women were even all that interesting. They reduced Rogue to a plot point, Kitty to a third-wheel in a love-triangle, Jean to a girl who can't be trusted with her own feelings, Mystique to bland nothing of a character, Jubilee to a cameo with no lines, Storm to a shallow follower, Dazzler to an editing-floor Easter egg, Moira to a brainless secret agent, and Psylocke to a generic Asian-with-purple-hair-and-a-katana.

Lay as much blame as you want at Singer (he deserves a lot of it), but nobody in the Fox system seemed to genuinely care about characterization of female characters. Except the writers of Deadpool, absurdly, where (of all characters) Copycat and Negasonic Teenage Warhead at least got interesting and distinct personalities. But even that didn't last, as Deadpool 2 felt compelled to shove Vanessa into the nearest available fridge.

Makes me wonder if we'll see the MCU equivalent of this? After all, a lot of the actresses have talked about it.

Considering the great female X-Men characters that have butchered by Fox, i am SO glad this didn’t happen. Would like to see the MCU do it for their streaming series.

Why do we need an all female X-Men team? We already have strong female characters apart of the team, hell Storm is the leader of the Gold team. Sometimes I get offended by things like this, it’s the same when they change the race of certain characters. It doesn’t need to be done that way. Like the idea of making Tommy Oliver into a girl for the Power Rangers movie...I just don’t see the point.

@superbigguy32 - I know that's not Superman, but it was really à propos (especially since he was made black on Earth-2) :)

Kitty can carry a film on her own I think. She is a great character.

I would love to see her and Logan's mentor, men-tee/father, daughter relationship in the MCU.
