Has Marvel Studios' X-Men Reboot Lost Charles Melton As The MCU's Hank McCoy/Beast?

As Marvel Studios continues assembling the cast of its X-Men reboot, is there any truth to the rumours that Charles Melton has decided against playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Beast?

The cast of the X-Men reboot currently features Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Adam Driver is reportedly playing the movie's villain, and while the Magneto rumours have been debunked, it seems he's either Mister Sinister or Sebastian Shaw.

Christopher Abbott, Tom Pelphrey, Bill Skarsgård, Will Poulter, and Harris Dickinson are reportedly in the running for Professor X. Cailee Spaeny, meanwhile, seems likely for Rogue, while Charles Melton has repeatedly been mentioned as a favourite for Beast.

Over the past 12 hours or so, rumours have swirled on social media that Melton, best known for roles in Riverdale and Warfare, has now decided against playing Hank McCoy. If so, that could alter Marvel Studios' plans to reveal the primary X-Men cast at D23 on Friday.

Daniel Richtman has since explained that he shared the news about Melton privately, despite it not being "100%." Someone took that intel and ran with it, and the insider reiterates that neither Melton nor Spaeny are locked for X-Men quite yet. However, there's nothing to say that he's necessarily walked away from the project either.

This sort of back-and-forth isn't hugely surprising, especially as a cast like this is typically fluid as deals and schedules are worked out. Similar to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there will likely be some unexpected names when the ensemble is revealed, and unless the trades chime in, any casting rumour is best taken with a pinch of salt.

As of now, it doesn't sound like there are plans for Wolverine to appear in the X-Men reboot. Instead, we're expecting a First Class-style group of mutants, meaning even heavy-hitters like Storm could be absent from this first chapter. On the plus side, there's a good chance that Ororo Munroe will appear in Black Panther 3.

"I can’t wait for all of you to see Avengers: Doomsday. We have a movie after that called Avengers: Secret Wars, and after that the mutants are coming, and the X-Men are coming," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously teased. "That’s been a dream of mine. I started with the X-Men many, many years ago, and to bring a new version into the MCU is going to be very exciting."

"There are so many great female characters and some of my favourite female characters are in a group called the X-Men," he added, seemingly confirming rumours that the MCU's X-Men will be female-focused.

X-Men is currently expected to be released in theaters in 2028.

The surname McCoy is of Irish-Scottish origin. Henry McCoy isn't Asian or Native American. Bring on Peter Claffey for the role of Henry McCoy.
Spaeny is too short, and I would prefer better actress for Rogue. Sophie Thatcher or Emma Mackey are better choice.

@BiffDitko - Parker sounds like British origin, so?
I would have doubts when they consider Holland to play Miles Morales.

@dragon316 - Melton looks more like Thunderbird, not Henry McCoy. Melton as McCoy is racist fan casting? Maybe.
Ororo Monroe was born in USA, why not Asian Native American actress to play her?

@deamon - What I meant was, people are saying dude can't play Hank just bc he's half Korean?
But Tom Holland, a NON American can play an American guy?
See, they're both STUPID "arguments" who gives a flying f**k at a rolling donut WHERE ANYONE is from? Jfc, it's too early for a headache.

@BiffDitko - Let me help you guys out. British isnt an ethnicity. Holland is caucasian. So is Peter Parker. Hank is also caucasian and therefore an asian actor is indeed a race swap. Ororo is black. Halle Berry is black, not a race swap. Now if we are getting down to they actually need to be from that specific nation? That is a whole new can of worms. As long as the actor can pull off the proper accent, I dont care. Race swaps however, I am against in almost all scenarios now. This would have been an awful, DEI casting for Hank. He looks nothing like him.

@BiffDitko - I dont know why I lost you at DEI and honestly, I've always struggled when you guys treat it as a conversation breaker. Its not my policy, that what the corporates, including Dinsey call it.

From their own website: User Comment Image

So if I referred to it as inclusive or diverse, would that have bothered you? Im calling it DEI because thats what THEY call it. You ever read the casting call for some of the MCU and Star Wars roles the last 5 years, they are ugh, very specific. Why else would you cast a Korean guy in the role of a white, Irish/Scottish character?

X-men is my absolute favorite and I dont want to see the suits at Disney screw it up and a morally ambiguous Jean and a Korean Hank are mistakes imo. If you have an argument to make, go ahead but stop blaming people like me for citing their own policy for the reasons why they do things.

How does that quote CONFIRM it will be "female focused"? Sounds like Feige just really likes Storm or Rogue or Kitty Pride.
Of all the Marvel books out there, X-Men really is about the fight for equality, that our differences can bring us together as easily as they can divide us. If any CBM needs actors and actresses out of the norm it's an X-Men movie.
I'm just keeping an ear open for all the inevitable "whistling" that's bound to follow...

@BiffDitko - never met any one named norm if I understoood your comment properly anyone can play X-men it’s about mutants be outcasts rejected normal people hate them who they are any black woman play storm it has happens Haley berry played her she not from Africa but she black anyone can play Xavier cyclops there nationality religion HEIGHT does not matter who they player it’s there experience marvel race swapped kang.,

Wesly snipes , Pedro pascal and Robert downer don cheadle are all 1 foot short to comic heights in books no compalined about them be 1 foot short and definalty don cheadle not having Ali of muscle mass and weight as should have in books but doesn’t no one cry about that
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 8/11/2026, 8:38 AM
@dragon316 - "Out of the Norm" means unusual, atypical, or different from what is usual, expected, or standard.

What Im saying, again, is that if any movie should have those kind of actors, it's an X-MEN movie.
I'm saying that is exactly the type of actors they should be looking for.
I don't care about what someone looks like, who they f**k, where they're from, or what Sky God they pray to. Can they play the part? Do they capture the spirit of the character? Believe it or not, THAT'S what's important.
I hope this cast is STACKED with the kind of actors and actresses that make the basement dwelling neckbeards clutch their pearls and scream "My childhoooood!!!"
If any MCU movie can do it, it's this one.
That's what X-Men has ALWAYS been about.
Change.

I was more excited about the Peter Claffey rumor, and until anything is actually confirmed these articles are reporting on rumors of rumors. At this point we should just wait for D23 unless a true source breaks confirmable casting

It’s so weird to comment about a rumor of an actor not apparently being fully “locked in” for a role which may or may not even be true or have ever been at all…

Regardless , i am not fully sold on Charles Melton as Hank McCoy/Beast if he indeed is Marvel’s pick for the role since I’m unsure if he could be able to convey the intelligence of the character even if he has done shades of the gentleness and insecurity Hank has in his other roles.

My choice would be Peter Claffey but I’m not sure if he could also convey the intelligence of the character and might portray a better Colossus tbh.

However Josh is right in that this kind of casting shuffle so to speak is pretty standard for a film because let’s remember that someone like Pedro Pascal was seemingly the last person cast in FF as Reed after going through a few people (and ultimately he did very well imo) so this normal.

This is why the major trades don't report casting until the casting has been finalized. Charles Melton has long been rumored by internet pundits but never was reported by the trades as having the role. Melton was like any other actor going up for a role, he was in negotiation, not yet signed on for the role. And if this reporting is accurate, turned down the role in the final hour. This happens all the time. Studio and the actor couldn't come to terms during negotiation. So, did Marvel lose Beast? No, you can't lose something you never had.

Regarding Charles Melton dropping out for the role of Beast, Marvel Studios has always shown to have a backup plan. With Chris Evans for Captain America, it was Wilson Bethel (Bullseye). With Tom Holland for Spider-Man, it was Charlie Rowe. For Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson was backup to Emily Blunt, who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. There is a backup actor for Beast. We just don't know who that actor is because the internet was determined Charles Melton got the role. I'm sure Marvel has already contacted that person and is negotiation with them at this very moment.

Regarding how this effects a potential announcement at D23. That event is in a few days. Marvel Studios probably already has made plans to transport the confirmed actors to the event. I could be wrong, but I doubt one actor dropping out at the last moment will affect Marvel's plans. Marvel announced ALL the Eternals actors in person at D23 in 2019 with Gemma Chan announced on screen. I expect they will do the same with the X-Men cast this year. If the Beast announcement comes in late, they'll make the actor's announcement on screen or just leave that role unannounced. Remember, Mark Ruffalo did not sign his contract for Hulk just hours before stepping on the SDCC stage in 2010 with the other Avengers. Marvel Studios wants to make a spectacle of large ensemble casts, they did it with Avengers, they did it with Eternals, I expect the same will happen with the X-Men. Hopefully that tradition continues at D23 this year.

Mytimetoshine was the first to tweet Charles Melton in talks for Beast.

and months later...

DanielRpk says he dropped out of the role just a few days before D23.
