James McAvoy Talks X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, Says Charles Xavier's Journey Will Be 'Dark'

McAvoy offers some new tidbits for his reprisal as Charles Xavier in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days Of Future Past, teasing the characters journey and suggesting that we're in for a darker sequel to 2011's First Class.

Speaking with Shortlist, actor James McAvoy talks more about his return as Professor Charles Xavier in next year's X-Men: Days Of Future Past. He reveals that the character will be very different from when we last saw him in 2011's First Class, and that the Bryan Singer-directed "inbetweenquel" will see Xavier face a 'dark journey'. "I think it’s going to be quite a dark journey compared to the caddish, almost playboy character that we turned him into in the first movie. I think it will be going through a darker place to ultimately get a sorted Professor X that we’re used to seeing come the third movie. This movie might be a little bit more of a passing through the crucible for him." He also expresses his excitement for the film's ensemble cast, which mostly includes actors from First Class and the original X-Men trilogy. "It’s going to be a humongous cast. It’s going to be like the cast of the beach scenes in Saving Private Ryan but everyone’s a mutant and everyone you’ve seen in other movies before." X-Men: Days Of Future Past stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult and Omar Sy. The film is set to hit theaters July 18th, 2014.

Hoping for the best, but I'm scared as hell this will be a clustered mess. Prove my fears wrong Singer.

Yeah yeah it's dark. Everything is dark, every movie is dark. My room is dark when I turn the light off. What does that even mean anymore? And why is it cause to rejoice among fans? When is a movie not dark these days?

This film has soooooo much potential to be one of the greatest superhero flicks of all time. I honestly believe that the Avengers has met it's match.

I'm going with team fox for the win of best superhero flick for summer 2014.

Indeed you two, Evil Dead looks like it will please. I'm just hoping we get another badass Ash type character outta this. Maybe they can make it a girl this time, and while she is floating around in the timestream she can meet the male Ash. A fan can only hope right.

@gambgel

I was wondering the same exact thing bro. When he speaks of "dark" is he possible referring to his connection with other mutants or perhaps coming across a threat in which he may not be able to comprehend. What if he accidentally comes across Apocalypse's conscious? He could really get f***'d up by doing that...

This term "dark" is being thrown around a lot lately, basically since batman begins.

Ultimately with this movie, I think it means the movie will be more serious and have less jokes, laughs and not have much in terms of love stories and sappy shite...

Just serious effin badassery!!!

Things I'm most looking forward too:
1. Xmen vs. sentinels
2. Past (60s,70s) xmen meeting new xmen (2000,2010s) and that dynamic
3. Kitty pride and wolverine teaming up
4. Peter Dinklage - if you have seen game of thrones, you know exactly what I mean. This guy is an incredible actor

This movie scares the shit out of me. So much to correct in one movie. Now, the idea that Apocalypse might be in it, scares me more than Gusto on a bender.

Although, I'd love to hear this spoken by Apocalypse, "Look upon me and tremble...for I bring the purity of oblivion to your world." Best freakin quote ever.

I'm fine if it's dark, but I hope they don't take that grounded, realistic approach.

That wouldn't work for X-Men, especially a time-travel story.

Oh golly, he said "dark journey", "dark place" and "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"! The movie will be wicket cool lol James, sit yo ass down. First Class was good enough to get me to see a sequel, you don't have to sell it with the cliche DARK angle and Saving Private Ryan. All I can think about is THIS when you say that...

Well I can't imagine Professor X skipping around with joy while he's paralyzed - by his treacherous best friend who ran off with his adopted sister - and is hated more than Jews and gays combined by humanity, and is being harassed by time traveling mutants and dwarves that build super robots that are designed to hunt him and everyone he cares for down. Dark times indeed.
