Lauren Shuler Donner Talks X-Men: First Class, Wolverine 2, Deadpool And Magneto!

In the following interview with Crave Online (which took place a few weeks ago but was only posted today) the producer of the X-Men movies talks more about each of the confirmed and rumoured mutant related movies that we can expect to see on the big screen in the next few years courtesy of Fox. CBM is seemingly split down the middle when it comes to how we all feel about the studios comic book movies but check out what she has to say below and share your thoughts in the usual place!

On X-Men: First Class:

"I personally feel that the X-Men franchise is kind of like Marvel in that there’s a lot of characters, there are a lot of stories, 40 years of comics and that we can make multiple movies. It’s not like Spider-Man where there is a Spider-Man and you follow him. This is THE X-Men and there’s a world. In that world, we can tell many stories. We’re trying to do everything as practical as possible but sometimes we have to build it just to control it. We are going to try as much practical effects as possible. Then only when we have to, use CGI. Matthew Vaughn is a really good director. He brings a very stylish and sort of out of the box vision. He is also very set on casting the best actors possible so the characters become real and the story.

On Wolverine 2:

"We have another Wolverine that we’re going to do, The Wolverine Saga, with Mariko, The Japanese Story, that miniseries. But that we pretty much follow the comic pretty closely, as closely, really closely."

On Deadpool:

"Ryan is so committed to being Deadpool. He is Wade Wilson. Well, no, he’s Deadpool. He is so committed to it that he worked with the writers on the script. Even though he’s doing Green Lantern, he’s stayed involved in that project. It’s very different. It’s like Harrison Ford doing Star Wars and Indiana Jones. DC and Marvel are different universes with different movies. But sure, the more popular and well known he is the better.I’m hoping we’ll get it off the ground next year."

On X-Men Origins: Magneto:

"You know, there’s internal discussions but probably not. It kind of got incorporated into this one, a lot of it. Magneto history. Stuff from the Marvel/Magneto history."

They better get Deadpool going!

While Ryan Reynolds is perfect, I really don't want to wait till 2014 to see it...

hell for deadpool, the character and ryan reynolds are entertaining enough that they could make up a whole new storyline for him and it wouldn't matter, it'd still be great

@ joshw

good find,mate.

x-men first class-the death of the x-men,what should of been comics best movie franchise ruined by a bunch of knobs.:(

wolverine 2-this does actually sounds promising, but i'm not going to speak to soon knowing fox it won't have enough mutants in it.

deadpool-unless this movie is r-rated,i'd rather it didn't get made.i stick to the comics.

magneto-has so much potenial, from his young days in a concetration camp, his falling out wth professor-x,the birth of the scarlett witch & quicksilver & the formation of the original brotherhood of evil(quicksilver, scarlett witch, mastermind, blob & toad.) :)

lets see what happens.

I don't know how they drew on 40 years of comics when they constantly screw up the continuity, histories and team members so royally. No Jean or Scott, but Havok?? In the First Class of X-Men?? In the 60's???? C'mon FOX!!!

Thanks guys! Personally, I look at that photo at the top of this article and see only pure evil! ;D

Seriously though, I think that X-Men: First Class will be a decent movie that tramples over the comic books (which is what bothers me most and why I know I'll hate it) and if they really are sticking closely to the source material with Wolverine 2, we might actually be in for a treat! Hopefully, they wont [frick] up Deadpool but that movie already has great writers and a great leading man so I'm not too worried right now and thank God they scrapped Magneto - it would've been the most pointless CBM ever!

Dynamo: Lol, I picked up on that as well - I'm not sure if she's trying to point out that the characters are like their own universe because there's so many of them or whether it's the more likely option that she's just plain ignorant!

They need to make DP right. That goes without saying, I guess, but it can easily go off into ridiculousness (the bad kind) and cheesiness if it was poorly handled. Reynolds and the Zombieland writers are a good start, great even, now they need to get a competent director who can balance all the elements that comes with Deadpool: humor, action, memorable characters, etc. I really hope they hire a good director, because this movie could be awesome if done right.

grif: Lol, too right! I just wish I was there with them...so I could beat them across their heads with that Wolverine statue! When I think of the damage they've each done to the characters, I'm not a violent man, but I honestly could use that to murder them. Right, off to take my meds! :D

Dude ur comment on that pic of them as epic visionaries but they are shit, is spot on!

Shuler Donner has done only a handful of good movies in her 30 year career, and reached the dizzying heights of producing Free Willy 3: The Rescue.

As for Singer, u dont need me to tell u, thats he's responsible for destroying this generations view of the most iconic superhero ever. What a tool!

She is really schooled in avoiding answers.Do you guys listen to her interviews?

"What made now the right time to go to First Class?

It just felt like a good way to re-enter the franchise."

He asks her why now is a good time and her reply is basically because now is a good time.

"With all your superhero movies, have you seen a change in 20th Century Fox in the last few years?

You’re going to love Deadpool. You’re going to love Deadpool."

What? The previous question she just repeated what he asked. This answer has nothing to do with the question.

"With Fox, are they more hands off on this one?"

We’re partners.

Okay?Does that mean they're more involved, equally involved or less involved?Again, his question states Fox's involvement and her answered only reiterates what he said.

Are you kidding me? Get this woman and Singer off the X-Men movies. Remember she said X-men origins Wolverine would be bad ass,,,,Yeah bad as ass! What about her comment about the use of CGI? Are you kidding me? If this movie doesnt have the original 5 for the whole movie Im not giving FOX a penny anymore. They have bastardized my X-Men.
