Is Fox using their X-Men spinoffs to give opportunities to team members not named Wolverine, Mystique or Magneto? Colossus definitely got his chance to shine in Deadpool and executive producer Simon Kinberg has revealed that other X-Men characters may get a similar shot in the New Mutants spinoff. "Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline 'X-Men' movies. As we are going, I would say it's likely that you will see some familiar faces." However, the New Mutants team will not be populated solely by X-Men C-listers, the majority of the team will consist of characters original to the various comic book incarnations of the team. "There's a very deep bench. There's a long, long list of names, and I'll tell you some of the names on that list I don't even know. That's how deep it goes."
What's your ideal roster for the New Mutants team? Given that the film is being described as a Young Adult film (think Hunger Games and The Maze Runner), that would seemingly rule out some of the older X-Men characters like Beast and Wolverine. Upon further thought, it's a little unclear who from the X-Men could join the film, given that X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the '80s. If the New Mutants film is set in present-day, that would seemingly rule out everyone in Apocalypse as team members. Perhaps a few characters from Apocalypse show up in the New Mutants film as instructors? However, the majority of the cast in Apocalypse are baby-face actors that couldn't pull off playing a version of their characters 30 years older. Fox will certainly have to think this one through to ensure continuity.
