NEW MUTANTS Director Says Reshoots Never Happened Because Of Disney Acquisition; Confirms Lockheed

Despite rumors that The New Mutants had undergone reshoots, director Josh Boone has now confirmed that they never happened because of the Disney takeover, and were never scheduled to take place anyway...

Last year, a persistent rumor did the rounds which claimed that X-Men spinoff The New Mutants was to undergo extensive reshoots in order to alter the tone and make some last minute overhauls after Disney's acquisition of Fox's assets. Well, director Josh Boone has now confirmed that not only was no additional footage filmed, but they didn't even get the chance to shoot standard pickups.

“Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots,” Boone explained to EW. “And I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups. “We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older.”

THE NEW MUTANTS Officially Rated PG-13 For "Violent Content & Disturbing/Bloody Images"

Boone also revealed that he had to step away from the movie for about a year while Disney decided what it wanted to do with its slate of unreleased or unfinished Fox projects, but he was very happy when he finally got the go-ahead to finish the film.

“When they called me right before I went to go make The Stand and said, ‘Would you come finish the movie?’ I said, ‘I would f—in’ love to come finish the movie!’”

What really needed to be completed was about 25% of the film's visual effects, most notably Illyana’s sorceress abilities and Lockheed. Yes, the fan-favorite alien dragon (who is actually Shadowcat's companion in the comics) will feature in The New Mutants.

“You see a little bit of him there," Boone says of the latest trailer. "I wouldn't say too much more, but I was pleased with how we had him in the world and had him as part of Illyana’s story."

The New Mutants hits theaters on April 3. You can check out a new TV spot below along with some recently released character stills.

Cecilia Reyes

Dr. Cecilia Reyes is the head of the institution where the five young mutants assemble to learn how to control their powers. There are hints in the footage we've seen that she knows more than she's telling them, however, particularly when it comes to Mirage and her connection to the Demon Bear.

Mutant Skull?

We have no idea who this skull belonged to, but it looks like Reyes is using it as some kind of teaching prop.

Cannonball #1

Sam Guthrie is the eldest of a large Kentucky coal mining family and the epitome of a southern gent. Sam has the ability to fly at jet speeds while creating an impenetrable force-field, earning him the codename Cannonball.

Cannonball #2

He co-leads the team with Mirage in the comics, and develops an uneasy friendship with Sunspot. He also looks upon Wolfsbane as a Little sister, unaware that she harbours romantic feelings for him.

Cannonball #3

Sam will be played by British actor Charlie Heaton, who will be best-known for his impressive turn as Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things. He also appeared with Naoimi Watts in the 2016 thriller, Shut In.

Magik #1

Easily the most poplar character on the team, Illyana Rasputin is the younger sister of Colossus and a powerful sorceress. As Magik, she has the ability to teleport to different dimensions and this leads to a darker side of her personality emerging when she spends some time in the demonic realm of Limbo.

Magik #2

Though this initially results in her terrified teammates giving her a wide berth, she eventually learns to balance both sides and work with her fellow mutants.

Magik #3

Magik will be brought to life by Anya Taylor-Joy, who rose to prominence with the role of Thomasin The Witch and has since appeared in the likes of Morgan, Barry and M. Night Shyamalan's Split. She then reprised the role of Casey for the director's divisive follow-up, Glass.

Wolfsbane #1

Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, is a young a Scottish girl struggling to reconcile her staunch religious beliefs with her ability to transform into a werewolf. She's shy, sheltered and nervous for the most part, but a much darker side is unleashed when the wolf takes over.

Wolfsbane #2

Rahne is close with Mirage and Cannonball (whom she has a crush on), but weary of Magik because of her outspoken personality and demonic powers.

Wolfsbane #3

Wolfsbane will be portrayed by arguably the most well-known member of the cast, Maisie Williams, who shot to fame as Arya on HBO's Game of Thrones. Williams has also appeared in the likes of Netflix's iBoy and Doctor Who.

Mirage #1

Danielle Moonstar is a powerful telepath, with the ability to project vivid images/illusions into her opponents' minds. Though unconfirmed, there's a pretty good chance Mirage is the one responsible for the terrifying visions the others are plagued by in the trailer. In the comics, she takes the shy Rahne Sinclair under her wing and the two become close friends.

Mirage #2

Mirage will be played by relative newcomer Blu Hunt, who is part Native American. The 24-year-old has previously appeared in The CW's The Originals, but this will be her first feature role.

Mirage #3

We don't know how much Boone's movie will draw from the Demon Bear Saga, but the monstrous entity was glimpsed in the recent trailer, and Mirage's charm certainly hints at some kind of connection.

Sunspot #1

Roberto da Costa is a brash Brazilian mutant with the ability to channel the sun's energy and gain great strength in the process. He's arrogant and hot-headed, but also fearless and protective of his teammates.

Sunspot #2

In the comics, he finds himself at odds with pretty much all of his colleagues, though he does develop a friendship/rivalry with Cannonball.

Sunspot #3

An incarnation - though not a very faithful one - of Sunspot actually appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but the role has been recast for The New Mutants with 13 Reasons Why and Teen Wolf actor Henry Zaga.

Interesting...I can see this being a Snowman situation.

And that’s not a good thing...this statement comes off as damage control imo.

@regularmovieguy - then God help them lol

I want a documentary on the making of that film.

@BlackBeltJones

I was hyped for it before it came out 😂

What a terrible movie though..one of the worst crime movies I’ve ever seen.

Hope New Mutants isn’t a mess but they have an uphill battle.

@regularmovieguy -it can still be done right. Love the book. Need the right people behind it.

I would love to see Tyler Sheridan take a crack at the script or even direct. If not him, Villeneuve or Rian Johnson.

Have you read many of Jo Nesbo’s book or just The Snowman?

While it too bad that the merger affects the potential of this film so badly, Fox f$@ked up the X-Men to such an extent that this became a causality of poor decisions. Hopefully it’s good movie & can somehow be folded into the MCU alongside Deadpool.

@Superfan1 - I doubt that, feige prefers having full control on the MCU.

@JustALurker - People also doubted this movie would see the light of day after the merger, yet here we are....

@TRexx21 - but saying “it might get folded in the mcu” sounds as plausible as “Wolverine will return in Endgame because of time travel” theories.

@JustALurker - Not necessarily...one of those entities is just starting their movie debut which could go either way, while the other has "retired" his over-saturated run for the moment. It's all about preference, those who hated FOX-men are just adamant to believe nothing related to them will ever go into the MCU out of sheer detest of how Fox treated the property. However, coming from a logical standpoint, it makes sense to keep a movie that has already been made and IF it becomes something good, you work from there and if it flops, well you can just sweep it under the rug w/ the other FOX-men stuff. I'm pretty sure Feige has a contingency plan for either direction it goes.

The director had to spoil Lockheed's appearance. Oh well. Never thought this little guy would make it to the big screen ... Takes me back to reading the wonderful Chris Claremont-Paul Smith run back in the day.

@GeneralZod - We actually see Lockheed in the final trailer at the very end, but he's very easy to miss, so it was already spoiled back then

Probably for the better, to be honest. I can’t think of major exceptions, but it seems like the chance of (extensive) reshoots doing more harm than good is mixed at best.
