We were all under the belief that Henry Cavill was done playing Superman, so the news he will reprise the role in the new DCU following Black Adam has been welcomed by comic book fans. Now, the odds of him getting to take over from Daniel Craig as James Bond are significantly lower, though we did get to see him play a spy in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., of course.
In fact, he'll get another opportunity in Matthew Vaughn's upcoming spy thriller, Argylle, and USA Today (via ActioNewz.com) recently asked the Enola Holmes 2 star if that project will be the closest he ever gets to playing 007.
"Who knows, I guess time will tell," Cavill responded with a laugh. "We got to have this slightly larger-than-life character in play, which we could really have fun with."
Asked what he thinks about his fans campaigning for him to play James Bond - and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new Wolverine - Cavill said he enjoys seeing that, but it's not as easy as some of us might think.
Why? Well, he likes to give the characters he plays his all. That probably goes some way in explaining his decision to walk away from The Witcher after it became apparent he and producers weren't seeing eye to eye when it came to how Geralt of Rivia should be portrayed on screen.
"It is enormously flattering to read those articles that pop up about Bond all the time and who's the favorite. I enjoy that, of course. But it's all about how much time I have, and these roles need to be respected and a lot of work needs to be put into them. You can't just be jumping from iconic role to iconic role with no time to prep for them."
While more Superman is in Cavill's future, Bond does appear to be off the table, but who knows when it comes to Wolverine. For the time being, Marvel Studios is focusing on Hugh Jackman's return as Logan in 2024's Deadpool 3.
