Wolverine Review: A Bloody Disappointment Bolstered By EXcellent Performances By Liam McIntyre And Troy Baker

Marvel's Wolverine has finally arrived, but was the long wait worth it? Despite killer performances and brutal combat, Insomniac's latest Marvel game feels repetitive, buggy, and unfinished.

A review code for Marvel's Wolverine was provided by PlayStation on 9/15 - we've since reached 100% completion and earned the Platinum trophy.

Wolverine has been a long time coming, but was it worth the wait? In short, no, but there's some fun to be had with Insomniac Games' latest Marvel Comics adaptation. For comic book fans, the story takes some big swings, many of which likely won't be appreciated. The game makes huge changes to Logan's origin story, and while they sometimes work in context, the more you think about them, the dumber they get. From a startling, largely unexplained revelation about the mutant's past to a bizarre take on his history with Jean Grey, it's hard to say what Insomniac was going for here.

In fairness, there's room for interpretation with Wolverine's past, and moving away from Weapon X was a bold choice. Unfortunately, a new spin on that familiar story would have been preferable to what we get here. Still, Logan's relationships with Nathaniel Essex, Team X, and Jean prove largely compelling, and the bad is definitely countered with some good. Ultimately, Insomniac's take on the hero risks alienating fans of the character and, at several points, veers so far away from what makes Wolverine who he is that he becomes someone else entirely.

In terms of gameplay, Wolverine fares better in some areas than others. The combat is satisfying at times and feels suitably visceral as you hack and slash your way through Reavers, The Hand, and Sentinels. However, it's also extremely repetitive, boiling down to mashing SQUARE and TRIANGLE again and again...and again...and again. As time passes, the game boils down to short traversal sections that are bookended with fight after fight. There are a few special moves, but combat doesn't require much skill as a player and is far more basic than the Spider-Man games, where you're able to string sequences together to fight in a way that feels wholly unique to you. There's nothing particularly unique about Wolverine.

Boss battles are a drag, as they largely revolve around just parrying moves and running in to frantically hit them with as many moves as possible. You just repeat that process until you're done, meaning they lack variety and ask little of you beyond good timing. Throughout combat, Wolverine is brutalised to a point where his Adamantium skeleton is on full display, and he's splattered in blood. That's somewhat diminished by the same effects being used on rinse and repeat, and a tattered costume miraculously healing itself—there's mention of nano-tech early on—from one scene to the next. It's a small thing, but one that makes what you've just been through feel less impactful.

Wolverine attempts to throw in some variety with "Nightmare Doors," but they're a mixture of easy traversal missions and fighting waves of enemies, so they become more tedious than anything. The game also tasks the player with finding material crates and whiskey bottles, but its linear nature means you're unlikely to miss any of them even on a first playthrough. There are heaps of costumes to unlock, at least, many of which pull from the comics in fun ways.

Even when the story is lacking, the performances shine. Liam McIntyre is excellent as Wolverine, delivering a soulful take on the hero where needed, but also proving himself wholly convincing as a raging berserker. Troy Baker is a delight as the villainous Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister, delivering the type of quality work we've grown used to after seeing him as Joel Miller in The Last of Us. Krizia Bajos is similarly impressive as Jean Grey, while solid turns from Brett Gipson (Sabretooth), Nicole Pacent (Mystique), and Jason Spisak (Bolivar Trask) give the cutscenes a high-quality feel. They're not always working with the best material, but make no mistake about it: Wolverine shines through its cast, and McIntyre proves there's more to Logan than just Hugh Jackman.

Wolverine's biggest issue is that it feels incomplete. Several levels suggest there was once meant to be an open-world feel to the game, but wandering through downtown Tokyo feels surprisingly desolate and more like a PS4 game, given how NPCs react to Logan (well, don't react). There are a lot of glitches, whether it's Wolverine's dance with Jean ruined by NPCs walking straight off a balcony in the background or a late emotional moment between the two that was undermined by a large strand of hair protruding through Jean's head. There are lots of examples of the game feeling sloppy and unfinished, and a six-month delay would have surely helped greatly increase the quality. Insomniac has promised fixes for some glaring issues, but Wolverine is what it is at this point, and what it is is only okay.

Wolverine delivers killer cutscenes and performances, but with basic gameplay and an unfinished feel, Insomniac Games, the team behind the Spider-Man games, is no longer the best at what it does when it comes to Marvel Comics adaptations. ⭐⭐⭐

I finished it an hour ago and I enjoyed it, but they could have done a lot better with the game.

They could have made sections bigger and more explorable as well as add some side quests and such.

Wolverine wouldn't have worked as an open world game though. It works for Spider-Man but Wolverine is more of a character that finds a target and goes global.

@Mercwitham0uth - There are reports that say it was Sony who forced Insomniac to make it more linear halfway through development, Insomniac were developing a semi-open world, with much larger areas in Canada, Madripoor and Japan. I heard some say even the leaks from a few years ago had some more content than what the finished game ended up having.

I'd believe it, seeing as Sony seems to be on a generational fumble run in the gaming dept.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Outside of cash co...er, Spidey, I'd say it's not just gaming. Sometimes some just can't get out of their own way I guess.

2018: Spider-Man
2020: Miles Morales
2021: Ratchet and Clank
2023: Spider-Man 2
2026: Wolverine
2027: Venom (rumored)

What's happening is that they're putting out too many games that are too ambitious for the development time allocated to each one of them.

@TheJok3r - What they’re doing is building a Ubisoft coded monopoly on Marvel’s GOATed, so their output is getting decisively shittier and shittier every instalment. Venom is going to be complete ass water.

Pretty fair review; it wasn't the complete disaster that the troll farms on reddit and twitter are suggesting it is - but it definitely had a lot of room for improvement. As a story-driven fare its pretty solid, and combat feels nice, but everything you do in between story beats feels repetitive, and the actual game design was pretty bland (locations etc). I generally enjoyed my playthrough enough to get to the end, though; I'd agree with 3 stars.

I like it so far. Its a Wolverine game and anyone expecting more than a hack n slash was confused when they bought it.
As its been mentioned, this game is linear which is to be expected. We cant have Wolverine running down the streets of NYC slashing people. Thats not who the character is anyway. He isnt Spiderman.
So far yes, the story is a far cry from any xmen story. Not sure why so many liberties were taken with that. Its interesting, but if Insomniac wants to build some type of universe out of these games they just ruined the chance. I feel it would have been more useful to trade Jean out for a different character or just have a different story all together.
In any case, the gameplay is fun even though yes, its repetitive. Doesnt make it less fun.
The last Wolverine game I enjoyed was SNES Adamantium Rage. So I am glad we got a new take on him.
It is worth playing if you are a fan of the character and want a new hack n slash to run through.

@AgentofSH1ELD - If you enjoyed that old game you absolutely MUST play Origins! Incredible Wolverine game that fans still talk about today and way better than the movie it’s based on

@JoshWilding - I shelled out the full price (I had a GameStop gift card from my birthday) but haven’t played it yet because I’m still deep into Dawnwalker (excellent game!) from what I’ve heard though, I should have waited for a sale

Watching the walkthrough videos on YT, it does look repetitive. At times, it reminds me of the Avengers game...
OldManHal
OldManHal - 9/24/2026, 7:25 AM
@TheShellyMan - The Avengers game genuinely had more variation in its combat for every singular character, that’s how shit this crap was
OrgasmicPotatoe
OrgasmicPotatoe - 9/24/2026, 7:28 AM
I did like the combat, as repetitive as it got. That was my big reason to get it. Also, I missed out on the Origins game when it came out, and now I can't find it anywhere, so I wasn't missing this one.

That said, it's a poor game. The hand holding gets increasingly insufferable as you progress (the blue fart line, the white paint everywhere, the hallway-like level design, sidekicks constantly telling you where to obviously go), the writing is nothing but lame Reddit-level garbage, and to top it all off, the sweet baby stench permeates the whole affair.

Troy Baker is the obvious standout here. That entire game is nowhere near as good as his performance alone. That, the combat and the suits. Those are my only positives after platinuming the game. Everything else is a major let down. 5/10 is a generous note.

Also, not even a single cigar puff ? 0/10

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Well if you can't find the XMO game anywhere, there are ways, you know. It's basically abandonware by now.

I had a great time with this.

Love when I get the chance to break up the 60-80 hr open world games with something shorter and more linear. It's a Wolverine game, and it left me satisfied.
